Best way to check the number of backlinks?
-
I know everyone is going to say opensiteexplorer (for obvious reasons) however why is there such a diffference in numbers between the following resources:
1. Open Site Explorer - 23 ref. domains & 939 links
2. Majestic SEO - 49 ref. domains & 599 links (fresh) / 111 ref. domains & 2332 links (historic)
3. Google Webmaster Tools - 6001
I understand the difference between fresh/historic in Majestic, it's the vast difference in numbers between the three services?!

SEO Keith has pretty much hit it spot on.
I would try and use a combination of all 4 if at all possible.
From my observation GWT accuracy seems to vary dependent on how often your content is crawled..... showing a history of all your links i'm not sure it can be beaten. But accuracy of what is included I am unsure. We have a few external links that were pointing at our site which we know no longer exist. 3 months on they are still in our link profile according to GWT.

Thanks Keith, that makes total sense

OSE only shows links from the more reputable sites and does not show links from low quality sources.
Majestic index shows more links and has a larger index - this could be better for you, personally I would rather see all link data possible for a domain.
Google Webmaster Tools is always going to show more links, Google for obvious reasons have a lot more power to crawl the Internet and store large link databases (GWMT is typically more complete IME).
That is why there is such a difference in back link figures between these services.
I use all these services + bing webmaster tools link checker (it allows you to check back link profiles of other domains, not just the ones you own like GWMT).
Hope that helps,
Keith

Best Way To Estimate Size Of Customer Base?
Hi. Just wondering what you all thought would be the best way to estimate a customer base for a certain niche? I'd be willing to pay for this service, if there are companies who do this sort of thing. But I'm assuming I'll be able to do it for free... How much weight should I putting into facebook ad data? Any advice?

What's the best way to redirect mobile site?
Hi, We have a mobile website using a sub-directory domain.com/m/whatever-page/. Our mobile is completely separate site from desktop version. What's the best way to handle the redirection from mobile visitors and those that are searching from mobile and see desktop version in the search result? Appreciate anyone's expert advise. Thanks,

Getting Rid Of Bad Backlinks - should I pay?
I have had a sudden increase in "bad" incoming links to my site. And at the same time my ranking has taken a dive. I have not done any link building in the last few months, and I have used multiple tools to track incoming links, and they show a major increase in incoming links from "toxic" sites in the past couple of months. I have documented this entire process with reports and emails, and have contacted all the Sites concerned requesting that they kindly remove the links. Most have replied that we must pay them between $5 - $25 per link to be removed and some of the Sites have multiple links to us. I am not sure what we should do and am concerned that if we pay these companies to remove the link, they could create more links as it appears many are connected to multiple spam type directory Sites. On the other hand many Sites advise not to use the Disavow Tool unless you are sure you need to use it and that even if used the results may take a very long time. Our decline in our SEO ranking is really affecting our business and I would really appreciate advice as to what to do?

Best way to remove worthless/thin content?
I have a Wordpress site with about 3,000 pages and 1,000 of those are no value/duplicate content and drive no traffic. They are blog posts each with a single image and permalinks like example.com/post1, example.com/post2 etc. I've started by deleting pages and 301 redirecting to relevant pages that actually have content. Is deleting and 301 redirecting the best route? Is 1,000 to many 301 redirects? Should I just delete the pages that aren't really relevant to anything else? Anything else I should know about deleting all of these pages? Any help would be great!

Google Places, NAP, multiple address with one phone number
How sensitive do you think the Google Places NAP algorithm is? If I have different Google Places pages for one client with multiple locations, but the same phone number for all locations with different addresses, will this hurt my Google Places ranking or organic webpage result?

Number of searches for specific keywords
Hi everyone, I am new to SEOmoz and SEO but learning fast. Is there a way within SEOmoz to find out how many people are searching for specific keywords? It is a question I ask myself, "how many people are using the keywords I think I would use to find my products or services"? I've seen other SEO professionals produce reports showing how many searches happen for certain keywords. Thanks James

What's the best SEO management system for link building and reporting?
We've tried multiple management systems, with the last one being Raven Tools (I think this is the most popular). We've also done our own manual tracking in excel and that gets very very tedious and sometimes hard to keep track of. What are some other ones that people have found that have been easy to use and made their work much more efficient (link building/tracking, reporting, competitive research, social, etc.)?
