Mircodata markup container in body of page
-
I have a question about the "container" that's created whenever microdata markup is applied. What is the purpose of this? I know Google says it helps them understand your content etc. but it creates a really bad eyesore wherever microdata markup is used. Basically a box with all the markup details right there in the body. Has anyone else experienced this? Is this why microdata markup has been so slow to be adopted by webmasters? I understand "hiding" the box in your CSS is not a good idea either. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Thank you very much. That is just what I was looking for.

Hello,
The plugin creates a new CSS file, which you can access and control to make the data appear any way you like:
http://historyofmormonism.com/wp-content/plugins/schema-creator/lib/css/schema-style.css?ver=1.050Yes, the data that you are marking up needs to appear on the page, but you can mark up existing data instead of using a plugin that adds new data to the page. Or you can use the plugin to add the data to the page and customize the look by adjusting the CSS file.
My advice would be to learn how to add the markup yourself so you can just apply it to whatever it is on the page that you're trying to mark-up instead of relying on the plugin. This way you don't get the ugly box. It isn't that difficult if you can already do basic HTML. For example:
Here is what the plugin is doing:
Alex Baugh
Brigham Young University
ProfessorThe Div ID for "Schema_block" is what is creating that container. In the CSS file I linked to above it reads as follows (bolding is mine):
#schema_block {
clear:both;
margin:0 auto 10px auto;
** background: #EEEEEE;**
** border: 1px solid #CCCCCC;**
padding: 1em;
overflow: hidden;
}You can make that look like whatever you want it to look like. For instance, you could completely remove the margin, background, border and padding. It's not the "box" that Google needs to see, it's the content (e.g. Alex Baugh, Brigham Young University, Professor) on the page and the markup in the code that surrounds it.
I hope this clarifies the issue for you. A good designer/developer should be able to provide further assistance if you are not comfortable editing code or CSS files.

Does anyone else have insight on this?

The site is in Wordpress and I've been using a plugin called all in one schema.org rich snippets and schema creator by raven tools.
- As you can see it creates quite the eye sore especially if you were to start marking up a lot of stuff. Here is an example:
http://historyofmormonism.com/2014/03/26/hawns-mill-massacre-1838-resulted-30-mormon-casualties/
-
Schema creator by raven tools lets you add markup right into the body of the page like you will see about a paragraph down. I "marked up" the person Alex Baugh just for an example. You will notice the container it creates right inside the article.
-
If you scroll down to the bottom you'll notice a larger summary box, this is created by the other plugin; all in one schema.org rich snippets that marks up and creates a summary of the overall webpage.
-
If you look at the support forums for this plugin here: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/all-the-info-i-fill-goes-directly-into-my-post?replies=5#post-4030332
-
One of the authors of the plugin mentions that this box is necessary and includes a link to Google Webmaster forums backing it up, the 4th question down here:
https://sites.google.com/site/webmasterhelpforum/en/faq-rich-snippets#display
-
I also thought that maybe it was only this one plugin; all in one schema.org rich snippets but this other plugin from Raven Tools does the same thing. These two plugins are also two of the most popular schema microdata plugins on Wordpress.

This person has a similar question about the raven tools plugin
https://github.com/raventools/schema-creator/issues/104Thanks for your replies, I really appreciate it.

I am pretty sure you are doing it wrong. Can you link me? The markup should all be hidden normally, it is used as a way to describe elements that are on the page already, not for adding new elements.

Doorway page penalty
Has Google changed their interpretation of Doorway pages?We do not sell widgets but allow me to use Widget for this example;If we sold 25 very different widgets an online vendor would typically have 1 "mother" website with 25 different inner pages, each page to explain each type of widget they sell.However, for the past 9 years our approach is to have 25 different websites, one for each widget. With these 25 sites we concentrated on ranking the home page only . All these sites link back to our (No idexed) "Mother' site via no follow links where we have our Shopping Cart and Terms of Business. We did this partly to avoid having 25 separate Shopping Carts and to avoid having to change our Terms 25 times each time that became necessary. But yes we also did this as it was so much easier to rank each different type of widget in the SERPS. Also we think its a better user experience as in our business buyers of yellow widgets will not be interested in blue widgetsWe have been reading for years that google does not like doorways pages but we were not 100% certain if they might regard our sites as such .This is because our approach has worked great for nine years. That is until December last year when all 95% our sites fell dramatically in the SERPS usually from page 1 to page 2 or 3. First thing we did was to go through all our sites and search for the obvious; toxic links, duplicate content, keyword density, https issues, mobility issues, anchor text, etc etc and of course content. We found no obvious problems that could affect 95% of the sites at the same time but we ordered new homepage content for most of our sites from expert seo writers. However, after putting on this new content 3 -4 weeks ago our sites have not moved up the SERPS at all.So we are left with the inescapable conclusion that our problem is because google sees and devalues our sites as doorway pages especially as 95% of your sites have been affected all at the same time Would any SEO experts on this forum agree or be able to offer an opinion?If so, what might be the solution going forward? We have 2 solutions under consideration;1) Remove all links from each of our 25 sites to our "mother Site" and put a shopping cart and our TOS on each of the 25 sites so they are all truly independent stand alone websites.2) Create 25 inner pages on our mother site (after removing the no index) , for each of the 25 widgets we sell , then 301 each of the 25 individual sites home pages to its inner page on the mother site . I think this might be the best solution partly as almost all of our higher ranking competitors are ranking their inner pages not their homepage. But I worry if these 25 sites will really pass much link juice if they have been devalued by Google.?Any advice will be gratefully received.

Redirecting 404 pages
Hello,We have a wordpress site that has some "hidden" pages with weird URL's. Due to the way the site was built (not by us) if we setup our standard practice for 404 pages some site functionality will be lost.Standard Practice for 404's www.domain.com/fafsaf shows 404 error pageProposed solution:- www.domain.com/safaf >forwards to> www.domain.com/404 - shows 404 error page. Will this stop the search engines indexing the pages? - we have also amended the robots.txt to try and stop some pages being indexed but we still keep finding the odd little "hidden" page.The aim is to try and get all the search engines just to index the few simple pages on the sitemap instead of finding all these extra pages.

Duplicate content within sections of a page but not full page duplicate content
Hi, I am working on a website redesign and the client offers several services and within those services some elements of the services crossover with one another. For example, they offer a service called Modelling and when you click onto that page several elements that build up that service are featured, so in this case 'mentoring'. Now mentoring is common to other services therefore will feature on other service pages. The page will feature a mixture of unique content to that service and small sections of duplicate content and I'm not sure how to treat this. One thing we have come up with is take the user through to a unique page to host all the content however some features do not warrant a page being created for this. Another idea is to have the feature pop up with inline content. Any thoughts/experience on this would be much appreciated.

Schema Markup Showing On Some Pages But Not Others
We have implemented Schema markup for Reviews on product pages. All these pages check out in the Markup Checker Tool in Webmaster Tools, but out in the wild only about 50% of them are actually showing the Review markup in SERPs. Example of a page showing Review markup successfully: http://www.cloud9living.com/los-angeles/drive-a-stock-car And example of a page not showing markup in the SERPs: http://www.cloud9living.com/las-vegas/race-a-ferrari Any ideas on why some SERPs show markup and others do not? Thanks!

Does Google make continued attempts to crawl an old page one it has followed a 301 to the new page?
I am curious about this for a couple of reasons. We have all dealt with a site who switched platforms and didn't plan properly and now have 1,000's of crawl errors. Many of the developers I have talked to have stated very clearly that the HTacccess file should not be used for 1,000's of singe redirects. I figured If I only needed them in their temporarily it wouldn't be an issue. I am curious if once Google follows a 301 from an old page to a new page, will they stop crawling the old page?

Why Is This Page Not Ranking?
Hi Mozzers, I can't rank (the page is nowhere on the Google grid that I can find) and I've not been able to move the needle at all on it. The page is http://www.lumber2.com/Western-Saddle-Pads-s/98.htm for keyword "western saddle pads." I'm inclined to think I'm cannabalizing the category with the products so I removed the word saddle from the majority of the product names on page. However, saddle pad or saddle pads is in the meta title for most if not all of the products. Do you think I'm cannabalizing with the product titles or is there something else going on? Thanks for any help.

Should I block temporary pages
I need some SEO advice on an odd scenario: We are launching a new product line (party supplies) on it's own domain (PartySuperCenter.com). Due to some internal/technical reasons we will not be able to launch the site until the summer. We already have the product in our warehouse so the owners want to created a section on our current site (CostumeSuperCenter.com) for the new products. Once the new site is up the product will be removed from our current site and moved to the new site. I am concerned about the effect this will have on our SEO - having thousands of product pages appear and then disappear after a few months. I was thinking about blocking the pages using the "noindex" tag. Is this how you would handle it? Thanks in advance for your help!

Static index page or not?
Are there any advantages of dis-advantages to running a static homepage as opposed to a blog style homepage. I have be running a static page on my site with the latest posts displayed as links after the homepage content. I would like to remove the static page and move to a more visually appealing homepage that includes graphics for each post and the posts droppping down the page like normal blogs do. How will this effect my site if I move from a static page to a more dynamic blog style page layout? Could I still hold the spot I currently rank for with the optimized index content if I turn to a more traditional blog format? cheers,
