Separating branded from non branded org. traffic volume
-
What is the easiest way of separating branded from non branded org. traffic volume? I've created great rankings for a client, and at the same time their brand searches seem to have dropped a lot. How do I present this in the best way since GA only shows little org. keyword info. Thanks!

I would presented as it is. I would focus on the positives that you have if you have a low balance rate if you have longer times on-site those types of things and explain to them that penguin for just came out. That there may be a lot of flux from that that could've change their rankings on certain terms
My opinion is the more straightforward you are with their client more they come to understand it the Google is not always going to be the most predictable way of getting traffic. That's not to say that you're not worth it in anyway shape or form it's just the fact that Google will fluctuate regardless of what we do.
I would put in the report a explanation of the things you're going to do to try and figure out whether it has something to do with the penalty or if it has to do with just normal flux natural part of the algorithm change cycle it should've ended but I don't know how much traffic you're talking about losing if it's a large amount I obviously can't speak to that I don't know if there were site changes made did you do anything to your websites structure?I would explain to them that the good things that you're doing to find out what could've been doing this. If it is something more significant than simple fluctuation.
I would do it on the phone people tend to be much more polite when on the phone or if possible do it in person. Over email people are much more cruel on the phone on the one they really are more forgiving and in person they are far more forgiving.
It sounds like you have been doing a great job for them I would assure them that you're going to continue doing a great job and continue toward card on their campaign is requested and that this is just a downcycle. I would of course be looking into it and I would share with them what I found. And what I did to correct it.
Sincerely,

let me clarify: I do not work on brand queries, the client ranks very well for them already like most companies. I work on non branded terms. In the last few month or so they've climbed to spot 1 and 2 in organic SERP for some very competitive non branded KWs. At the same time, their brand is weakening so the total organic traffic is declining (this client has a very strong brand, but it is declining). org. is just short for organic

You want to show your client something that is not necessarily accurate? Why are you using the term .org just for organic traffic?
Organic traffic is in my opinion much harder to get and more valuable than brand.
Brand is a given if somebody types in the company's name 99 times out of 100 it is going to open in Google unless there is a big problem.
Use segment.io in the future or simply go and Google analytics and find one of the many thousands of scripts that they have that will allow you to present your data as you wish.
I personally would level with your client tell them exactly what is happening I do not know what type of relationship you have with them but it is better to be honest with them even when things are not so good then to be dishonest and then one day find out that there going to get review for not being forthright with them.
Please do not think I am accusing you of anything because I do not even know if that is exactly what you are saying but if you are saying you just want to hide something from the client I would explain to them that organic is more powerful than brand.
Sincerely,
Thomas

How do sites without access to a site's analytical data, determine a site's organic traffic?
I've recently used a organic traffic checker that showed you your traffic compared to each google algo update. I was interested in how they derived the organic traffic totals for each month, without having access to our site's google analytics? I've since compared the data to historical google analytics data and it's not wrong, isn't 100% match either but isn't far from fact. So if they're predicting or making a guess, it's rather spot on, site crawlers and SERPs snapshots only provide so much info, I'm just wondering where they get the rest from and how?

How do I find out where my "direct traffic" came from?
Last weekend we had a significant rise in traffic to our site. Digging in to Google Analytics, most of it has come from the USA, with some from Canada, Australia and a few other countries. It has all gone to the same article on our website. I have also found that it has mostly come from Safari (in app), on an ipad and iphone. Google Analytics has put this down as Direct traffic. My feeling is that it is not. Could it be from a social media app - perhaps someone with many followers has pinned from our site, or something along these lines. Could it actually be organic search traffic and Google misattributing it as Direct? Bounce rate and time on site is fine, so I don't think it's a bot / spam.

Organic and direct traffic swap
We moved to a CMS (Webhook) and when we did that organic traffic and direct traffic swapped places. Since we moved it organic traffic is down by about 400 visits and direct traffic is up by 400 visits. I went through the list below and confirmed everything is working. The http refer wasn't being passed for a couple of weeks but the issue was resolved and the organic traffic issue is still ongoing. Is there anything else that may cause this issue? I confirmed the issue isn't one of the below problems. during http to https redirect (or vice versa) the referrer may not be passed incorrect subdomain or cross-domain tracking can strip the referrer. 302 redirects sometimes caused the referrer to be dropped problems with cookies being lost/corrupted. javascript missing from certain entry pages (means any further page view looks like a direct)

Does this traffic drop look like Penguin to you?
Dear Community In early October, I noticed a sharp drop of the rankings of the main KW of a website I manage: idee-sol.fr. This, of course I immediatelly attributed to penguin 2.1. While researching on the experience other webmasters have had with this unfortunate situation, I noticed that most of them had very sharp drops of traffic in a relatively small time, e.g.: a drop of 80% in a couple of days. But on idee-sol, the drop looks less steep yet equally worrying. Was the cause of this traffic/ranking drop due to penguin 2.1 exclusively or to penguin + something else (or not penguin at all?) I'm including an image of the "non paid search" report of analytics. dPnphnr

Loss of Google referral traffic after server move / CMS move
I have a client that changed from MoveableType to Wordpress. He also changed from a dedicated server to WP Engine. He may have blocked search engines for a week or two, so his organic traffic is down but only by 25%. He's 301 redirecting all of the old pages. The mystery is that his referral traffic from Google is down 90%. It's a popular blog, so that's thousands. It's been going on a month now. Anyone seen this before?

Will having a subdomain cause referral traffic from the domain name?
Hi! One of our clients has a site with the store on a subdomain: store.example.com. When we've set up goals for order confirmation pages, we often see most of the sources attributed to example.com. Is this because of the subdomain issue? How would we correct it so that we would see as the referring source for the goal the site that sent to the root domain originally, and not the site that sent to the subdomain? Thanks!
