Duplicating Keywords in Page Title

Hello All,
I am currently trying to establish the TITLE tag of my homepage.
I am trying to target 2 terms plus my company name.
For example, purposes, the two keywords are:
- Widget Program
- Widget Software
My company Name is:
- Widget Direct
I originally had the title as:
Widget Program | Software | Widget Direct
My thought was that I didn't want to repeat the word "Widget" too many times.
However, the SEOmoz on-page report card keeps telling me I should have the exact keyword in my title tag.
In that case it would make the title:
Widget Program | Widget Software | Widget Direct
Do you think that is better so that I have each keyword in the title or will that result in a penalty because it looks like I'm stuffing the title with the keyword 'widget'?
Any insight is greatly appreciated!

Here is SEOmofo's article on the (not so) recent change. It is safer to limit your characters to 70 rather than 77 as some titles that are 77 characters are more likely to get truncated in the SERPs. The SEOmofo snippet tester is good because it factors in pixel width rather than character length.

Hi Robert, as has been mentioned used the SEOmoz report card as a guide, but don't worry if you're not getting full marks! You've also got to look at the big picture too.
Your goal isn't to have the worlds most finely optimised titles! Your goal is to get more (qualified) visitors and make them customers.
With so many variables, both search engine ranking factors and human behaviours, to play with there are lots of things to take into consideration and getting overly focused on just one thing can be detrimental.
Yes, you do want to have your key words in your page titles - but remember your home page isn't your only page and you may have pages that are more relevant (or should be more relevant) for "Widget Program" for example. You need to decide which pages you want to rank for what, and why! Don't expect your homepage to do all your heavy lifting!
Homepages, unless the site is very focused, tend to end up being very generic and broad and tend to cater for those searcher/visitors who know your company brand and search for you by name (or enter your domain directly)
Remember too, that "containing relevant keywords" isn't the only job that your page title has to do. There's no point ranking highly in the SERPS if your snippet looks so spammy and unappealing that nobody wants to click on it.
The combination of your page title, description (and to some extent your URL) need to provide a compelling reason why someone would want to click on it. Are they going to find the answers to the questions, satisfy their needs etc? Can they see the benefit they receive by clicking.
A title made of a list of keywords is less likely to be compelling.

Don't repeat the same keyword twice in your meta tag!
Use your main keyword phrase exact match at the beginning, secondary after that. if the name of your domain is widget direct then it's already in your domain name so you don't need to add it to your title tag.
assuming "widget program" is your primary target and your secondary target also has "widget" in it go with something like this
<title>Widget Program | Software Widgets</title>
<title>Widget Program | Buy Software Widgets</title>
<title>Widget Program | Software Widgets for Dummies</title>
Use the plural to avoid repetitiveness and lost the company name also to avoid repetition. It is better for the secondary keyword to not have an exact match than to spam your keyword title.

Google no longer limits titles by character length but rather by pixel width.

Firstly, the SEOMoz on-page report is really only a guide and you shouldn't worry too much about using it. To be honest, I rarely use it and just follow best practices.
That said, there are still several alternatives you could try:
1. You do not necessarily need to have your company name in the title. This is a practice that is quite common place nowadays but realistically, unless you're a strong brand that has huge volumes of branded traffic, you don't need the company name in the title.
2. I would maybe suggest targeting the two keywords on different pages i.e. a Widget Program page and a Widget Software Page. This maybe the most user friendly option and probably the best option overall. Especially if the two keywords attract large volumes in traffic.

My concern with that was that I wanted to make sure the first keywords were the most important ones....
That is why I wanted "Widget Program" first as opposed to my company name (Widget Direct).
My other concern was that I didn't want to add many more words and reduce the weighting of my key terms.

In light of the new Panda update I am testing to see if natural page titles rank better. Chances are if it sounds spammy to you, Google is going to eventually think so too.
If you do go the keyword rich route change your divider text to look less spammy:
Widget Program | Widget Software | Widget Direct
Widget Program - Widget Software - Widget Direct
If natural is something you want to try, and you're trying to target a local area
Widget Program is made by Widget Software company Widget Direct in Local Area
Of course this is just an example, the title is too long at 77 charaters.

Titles tags: Smart to split brand name composed of multiple keywords?
Hello, We've been following the best practices outlined in this Moz article for title tags for a long time, however I have a question about the spelling of the brand name when the brand name is composed of keywords. For example, let's say your company is called FitnessGearUSA and your website url is www.FitnessGearUSA.com. How would you spell the brand name in the title tag? In a single word 'FitnessGearUSA' or in 3 words 'Fitness Gear USA'. We've been using the first approach for a long time, but I am starting to think that the second approach would be better, especially when the customer might include a single keyword that's part of the brane name in his search For example, a product page title tag would then look like this:

After fixing duplicate pages problem - keyword rankings have fallen off a cliff!
We have recently signed up to SEOMOZ and found that our site had over 2,500 duplicated pages. We reported it the the web designer and they found links on the website to an old prototype version of the website and so they did a SQL run to get rid of them. Doing this got rid of 90% of them. However, this morning, moz has just done another crawl of our website and our keyword rankings have fallen off a cliff. Particularly, important one that we were at position 1 for. We are now on the fifth page. Can anyone shed any light on it? Will this be temporary? Thanks Stuart

Targeting multiple keywords with index page
Quick keyword question.... I just started working with a client that is ranking fairly well for a number of keywords with his index page. Right now he has a bunch of duplicate titles, descriptions, etc across the entire site. There are 5 different keywords in the title of the index page alone. I am wondering if it OK to target 3 different keywords with the index page? Or, if I should cut it down to 1. Think blue widget, red widget, and widget making machines. I want each of the individual keywords to improve but don't want to lose what I have either. Any ideas? THANKS!!!!

Issue: Duplicate Pages Content
Hello, Following the setting up of a new campaign, SEOmoz pro says I have a duplicate page content issue. It says the follwoing are duplicates: http://www.mysite.com/ and http://www.mysite.com/index.htm This is obviously true, but is it a problem? Do I need to do anything to avoid a google penalty? The site in question is a static html site and the real page only exsists at http://www.mysite.com/index.htm but if you type in just the domain name then that brings up the same page. Please let me know what if anything I need to do. This site by the way, has had a panda 3.4 penalty a few months ago. Thanks, Colin

Getting Rid of Duplicate Page Titles After URL Structure Change
I've had all sorts of issues with google when they just dropped us on our head a few weeks ago. Google is crawling again after I made some changes, but they're still not ranking our content like they were so I have a few questions. I changed our url structure from /year/month/date/post-title to just /post-title and 301 redirected the old link structure to the new. When I look I see over 3000 duplicate title errors listing both versions of the url. 1. How do I get google to crawl the old url structure and recognize the 301 redirect and update the index? 2. Google is crawling the site again, but they're not ranking us like they were before. We're in a highly competitive category and I'm aware of that, but we've always been an authority in our niche. We have plenty of quality backlinks and often we're originators of the content which is then rewritten by a trillion websites everywhere. We're not the best at writing and titles, but we're working on it and this did not matter much to google previously as it was ranking us pretty highly on the front page and certainly ranking us over many sites that are ranking above us today. Some backlinks http://www.alexa.com/site/linksin/dajaz1.com A few examples - if you google twista gucci louis prada you'll see many of the sites who trackbacked to us since we premiered the song rank much higher than us. 3 weeks ago we were ranking above them. http://dajaz1.com/twista-gucci-louis-prada/ google search jadakiss consignment mixtape 3 weeks ago we were ranking higher than all 4 sites ranking above us. How do we get google to rank us again. It should be noted that I'm not using any SEO plugin's on the site. I hand coded what's in there, and I know I can probably do it better so any tips or ideas is welcome. I'm pretty sure that our issues were caused by the Yoast SEO Plugin as when I search site:dajaz1.com the pages and topics that display were all indexed while the plugin was active. I've since removed it and all calls to it in the database, but I'm pretty nervous about plugins right now. Which brings me to my third and final question How do I get rid of the page category and topic pages that were indexed and seem to be ranking higher than the rest of our content? I lied one more. For category url I've set it to remove the category base so the url is dajaz1.com/news or dajaz1.com/music is that preferable or is this causing me issues? Any feedback is appreciated. Also google is crawling again (see attached image) but the Kilobytes downloaded per day hasn't. Should I be concerned about this? Gd9i6

Long tail keywords and duplicate content (product description)
Hi <acronym title="Search Engine Optimization">SEO</acronym> pro's, how are you doing these days? Hope everything is fine... Let's get down to business: I've got a little question about ecommerce sites with duplicate content (product descriptions). I'm already ranking top #1 for exact keyword matche's (did a lot of backlink work with exact keyword). That's fine. The question is: long tail keywords still getting lower results than the competitors, because they published the content first. How to beat them? What I need to do/work to outrank competitors on long tail keywords? (I really need this because almost keywords/products from my niche only have 10% of exact search's). Hope someone can give me a word of light on this! Thanks!
