Wistia video rich snippet thumbnail images
-
Hi there,
I just wondered if anyone on the forum had experience of using Wistia video rich snippets and how to control the thumbnail image that appears in SERPs?
I have selected a thumbnail with the video information on the Wistia account, but a different one actually appears in the results pages (the image being used doesn't actually appear on the page at all, but it is elsewhere on the site).
Has anyone had anything similar and what did you do the control the thumbnail being used?
Thanks!

Thanks for the tips! I'll give them a try & report back!

If Google are pulling in a different thumbnail from the one you're stipulating in your Wistia account, there's likely going to be one of two problems.
- You embedded the video with an SEO embed before updating the thumb. This means that your schema.org mark-up surrounding the video will contradict with the variation of the thumb submitted in your video sitemap. Google may have chosen the default snippet in the schema, so check to see what's included in the source
- Your open graph tags are referencing a different image. As OG tags are in the head, they're often the ones Google take as the default for video thumbs.
You may alternatively have issues with Google randomly taking another image from your page to populate the video thumb, which I have seen happen a couple of times, but the above two situations are the most common.
I hope that's useful! If you need help solving the problem, give me a shout and I might be able to offer you some one-off consulting.
Phil.

Should I use a canonical URL for images uploaded to a blog post in Wordpress?
Hi, I have a wordpress website that has articles/news posts witch contain imagery. I've noticed that in the Media Library, when you upload an image to a blog post it generates a new permalink ...article-name/article-image-01.jpg I have Yoast SEO plugin and have the option to set a canonical URL for this image. Should I point it back to the actual article? Thanks for any helpers with this.

Use of iFrames to embed video content?
So we decided to add interesting video content we have shot ourselves to improve the user experience on our website. We have read though all the SEO material and advice we could find and decided to use Vimeo to host our videos instead of self-hosting. The videos themselves will not show up on Vimeo or Google as we set our account to 'private', but we notice that to embed the videos on our website - the embed code is an iFrame. My question's are, aren't iFrames supposed to be bad for SEO? Should we look to another video hosting solution instead? If other websites embed our videos on their site using the iFrame, do we get any SEO credit or the backlink? Thx.

Rich Snippets for recipe pages not appearing in Google
We are building a baking website and have implemented rich snippets for our recipe posts. We noticed inconsistent results on competitor sites, and then noticed it was happening to our links as well. Our content has only been live for a week, I know it may take a couple weeks, but other sites that have had their content around for a while have this happening too. For example: When you use this tool: http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets And put in this link (competitor): http://food52.com/recipes/864-deep-chocolate-cake-with-orange-icing and press "Preview," you'll see a nice rich snippet preview. Now go ahead and search for "Deep Chocolate Cake with Orange Icing" using Google, you will see that in the search results the image for this link is not appearing. This is happening to all of our links as well. Why? We are using the schema recipe format, but apparently that doesn't guarantee the image will appear in the actual search results. How does Google determine which images are displayed in rich snippets and which aren't?

Rel="author" showing old image
I'm using http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets to test my rel="author" tag which was successful, but I noticed I wanted to change my image in Google+ as it is not what I want. I changed my image in Google+, it's been over 14 hours now and still not showing the new picture using the RichSnippets tool. I know Google can take a couple weeks at least to show changes in search results, but this RichSnippet tool I thought was immeidate. Am I missing something here or am I just impatient? I want my new photo to show.

Video thumbnail pages with "sort" feature -- tons of duplicate content?
A client has 2 separate pages for video thumbnails. One page is "popular videos" with a sort function for over 700 pages of video thumbnails with 10 thumbnails and short desriptions per page. (/videos?sort_by=popularity). The second page is "latest videos" (/videos?sort_by=latest) with over 7,000 pages. Both pages have a sort function -- including latest, relevance, popularity, time uploaded, etc. Many of the same video thumbnails appear on both pages. Also, when you click a thumbnail you get a full video page and these pages appear to get indexed well. There seem to be duplicate content issues between the "popular" and "latest" pages, as well as within the sort results on each of those pages. (A unique URL is generated everytime you use the sort function i.e. /videos?sort_by=latest&uploaded=this_week). Before my head explodes, what is the best way to treat this? I was thinking a noindex, follow meta robot on every page of thumbnails since the individual video pages are well indexed, but that seems extreme. Thoughts?
