Https indexed...how?
-
Hello Moz,
Since a while i am struggling with a SEO case:
At the moment a https version of a homepage of a client of us is indexed in Google. Thats really strange because the url is redirected to an other website url for three weeks now. And we did everything to make clear to google that he has to index the other url.
So we have a few homepage urlsA https://www.website.nl
B https://www.websites.nl/category
C http://www.websites.nl/categoryWhat we did:
- Redirected A with a 301 to B, a redirect from A or B to C is difficult because of the security issue with the ssl certificate.
- We put the right canonical url (VERSION C) on every version of the homepage(A,B)
- We only put the canonical urls in the sitemap.xml, only version C and uploaded it to Google Webmastertools
- We changed all important internal links to Version C
- We also get some valuable external backlinks to Version C
Is there something i missed or i forget to say to Google hey look you've got the wrong url indexed, you have to index version C?
How is it possible Google still prefers Version A after doing al those changes three weeks a go?
I'am really looking forward to your answer.
Thanks a lot in advanced!

Sorry for my late respons.
We have decided to go over on https for the whole website that was the best thing to do. The results are good and Google is also happy because there is just one kind of a url we are using within the whole website.
We prefer the short url version and that worktout good.
Greetings
Jacco

Hey Djacko: Has Google figured it out? Is the right version of your page indexed now?
-
Hi Rickus,
Thanks for your answer. I agree its still a little bit confusing for Google wich url is the homepage url. We also discovered they have normal links pointing to https urls. So the intern linkstructure is not so good as well.
We will wait a little longer for Google to react on the 301 redirect. We were thinking if he still prefer the https version A, to change all urls in https urls and make an new sitemap with https urls as canonicals and redirect all http urls to https versions. I think Google prefer more often https versions of websites.
Whats your opinion about that?
Thanks a lot!

Hi there Djacko,
You redirected A to B but could not redirect A or B to C, So that means google is still not to sure of which one is the correct url. And switching from https to http is telling google you have a new domain.
So don't stress to much just make sure that your http://www.homepage.nl and the https://www.homepage.nl has the same work and SEO done on them and give google time to realise whats happend to you site.
In personal experience a 301 redirect always takes the longer to be crawled and updated and in this case its your homepage (domain).
Hope this helps and good luck

Purpose of static index.html pages?
Hi All, I am fairly new to the technical side of SEO and was hoping y'all could help me better understand the purpose of dynamic rendering with index.html pages and any implications they might hold for SEO. I work to support an eComm site that includes a subdomain for its product pages: products.examplesite.com. I recently learned from one of our developers that there are actually two sets of product pages - a set of pages that he terms "reactive," that are present on our site, that only display content when a user clicks through to them and are not retrievable by search engines. And then a second set of static pages that were created just for search engines and end in .index.html. So, for example: https://products.examplesite.com/product-1/ AND https://products.examplesite.com/product-1/index.html I am confused as to what specifically the index.html pages are doing to support indexation, as they do not show up in Google Site searches, but the regular pages do. Is there something obvious I am missing here?

No index on subdomains
Hi, We have a subdomain that is appearing in the search results - I want to hide this as it looks really bad. If I were to add the no index tag to the sub domain would URL would this affect the whole domain or just that sub domain? The main domain is vitally important - it is just that sub domain I need to hide. Many thanks

Getting a video displaying a lightbox indexed
We have created a video for a category page with the goal of building links to the page and improving the conversion rate of visitors to the page. This category is Christmas oriented so we want to get the video dropped in ASAP. Unfortunately there was a mixup with our developer and he created a lightbox pop-up to display the video on the category page. I'm concerned this will hurt our ability to get the video indexed in Google. Here was his response. Is what he says here true? "With the video originally being in lightbox the iFrame Embed was enough since the video can't be on the page, it would have to be hidden on the page which is ignored by Google. The SEO would be derived from modifying the video sitemap to define the category page as the HTML page for the Wistia video and Google will make the association. The sitemap did all the heavy lifting, the schema markup did not come till later so it had no additional affect on Google other then to re-enforce the sitemap." Thanks for your help!

Best way to handle indexed pages you don't want indexed
We've had a lot of pages indexed by google which we didn't want indexed. They relate to a ajax category filter module that works ok for front end customers but under the bonnet google has been following all of the links. I've put a rule in the robots.txt file to stop google from following any dynamic pages (with a ?) and also any ajax pages but the pages are still indexed on google. At the moment there is over 5000 pages which have been indexed which I don't want on there and I'm worried is causing issues with my rankings. Would a redirect rule work or could someone offer any advice? https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=site:outdoormegastore.co.uk+inurl:default&num=100&hl=en&safe=off&prmd=imvnsl&filter=0&biw=1600&bih=809#hl=en&safe=off&sclient=psy-ab&q=site:outdoormegastore.co.uk+inurl%3Aajax&oq=site:outdoormegastore.co.uk+inurl%3Aajax&gs_l=serp.3...194108.194626.0.194891.4.4.0.0.0.0.100.305.3j1.4.0.les%3B..0.0...1c.1.SDhuslImrLY&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&fp=ff301ef4d48490c5&biw=1920&bih=860

Number of Indexed Pages in Webmaster Tools
My # of indexed pages in Webmaster Tools fluctuates greatly. Compared to the # of URLs submitted (4700), we have 3000 indexed. The other day, all 4700 were indexed. Why does it keep changing? I obviously want all of them indexed right? What can I do to make that happen?

Getting Google to index new pages
I have a site, called SiteB that has 200 pages of new, unique content. I made a table of contents (TOC) page on SiteB that points to about 50 pages of SiteB content. I would like to get SiteB's TOC page crawled and indexed by Google, as well as all the pages it points to. I submitted the TOC to Pingler 24 hours ago and from the logs I see the Googlebot visited the TOC page but it did not crawl any of the 50 pages that are linked to from the TOC. I do not have a robots.txt file on SiteB. There are no robot meta tags (nofollow, noindex). There are no 'rel=nofollow' attributes on the links. Why would Google crawl the TOC (when I Pinglered it) but not crawl any of the links on that page? One other fact, and I don't know if this matters, but SiteB lives on a subdomain and the URLs contain numbers, like this: http://subdomain.domain.com/category/34404 Yes, I know that the number part is suboptimal from an SEO point of view. I'm working on that, too. But first wanted to figure out why Google isn't crawling the TOC. The site is new and so hasn't been penalized by Google. Thanks for any ideas...
