Ajax website and SEO
-
Hi all,
A client of mine has a website similar to Pintrest. All in Ajax/.
- So imagine an ajax-grid based animal lover site called domain.com.
- The domain has three different Categories Cats, Dogs, Mice.
- When you click on a category, the site doesn't handle the URL and doesn't change the domain
So instead of the domain going from domain.com to domain.com/cats, it uses the Ajax script and just shows all the cat pins.
and when you click on each pin/post it opens a page such as domain.com/Pin/123/PostTitle
It doesn't reference the category. However a page domain.com/cats does exist and you can go there directly.
Is this an SEO issue for not grouping all pins under a category?
How does Google handle Ajax these days, it use to be real bad but if Pintrest is going so well i'm assuming times have changed?
Any other things to be wary of for a grid based/ajax site?
I am happy to pay for an hour or two for a more in depth audit/tips if you can feed back on the above.
Fairly urgent.
Thanks

Hi BJ,
From an SEO point of view i don't like to work in AJAX but it sure has some user experience points, doesnt it.
Have you read this article http://www.seomoz.org/blog/create-crawlable-link-friendly-ajax-websites-using-pushstate.
Common practise is to check the text cache of the site, that way you are able to see what the search engine see's and possibly see where your dulicate content issues are

Hi Rocco, I'm adding a response to I can easily find this post later.
My initial impression is that making a site with dynamic content and no new urls is a bad idea for SEO reasons, it does show creativity and if built correctly maybe a very user friendly environment. I know flash sites share some of the same problems but have made inroads into deal with them.
I have some programing thoughts on how I would deal with this issue, but nothing I have ever tried so I'm very interested in what others have to say on this matter.

Hi BJ,
Over 7000 pages indexed. Yep all the categories are indexed, just getting a real lot of duplicate content from SEOMOZ.
More so interested in knowing if theres any best practise for an AJAX site seing that the way items get linked appears so diferent.

Have you checked to see if the category pages are being indexed?

Lightboxes and SEO
Do lightboxes (AKA popup boxes when you click "learn more" type CTAs) have any negative effect on SEO? We are looking at revamping our sites to have more of a tiled approach, and a lightbox with summary content popping out with additional CTAs, directing to pages with more information or free trial pages. Is there any downside to this approach from an organic perspective? is there anything specific to keep in mind when creating these if not?

Adding videos to a website
Hello! We are producing multiple videos (each about 1-minute long) for a company website. We have decided to use Wistia to host them, in order get the full SEO benefits of links to the videos. I have two questions: 1. Would it definitely be better for SEO to divide up the videos and place them on the various existing pages of the site that are related to the video content, rather than putting all the videos together on a separate video page? 2. If we do put different videos on different pages, would it be a bad idea also to have a video page with all the videos together? Would this be considered duplicate content? Thank you very much!

Optimising a Dynamic website ?
A client has bought the Nostalgia wp theme. I've installed Yoast but because the website is ajax based and the content for the pages are dynamically loaded the plugin won't work. Or at least not to my knowledge? The developer doesn't currently have a solution, which from previous expereience it will never be supported. So I need some possible solutions here. Create a mobile site? Cons more time, more money etc Create non dynamic pages linked in footer area. Cons page duplication etc. It's a small niche so having the basic elements is imperative to getting it ranking.

If you have an unlimited SEO budget, what would you do?
Here's a bit of background information: I've achieved the targets and is now being offered what is essentially an unlimited budget. I have a nice list of ideas but thought I would the brilliant people here at the SEOMOZ community what they would do. So as to promote as much response as possible, I'm going to keep my list to myself for now. And by "SEO", I mean I can do things like content strategy, blogging, infographics, etc. Shoot away!

Migrating online store to subdomain using shopify and effects on seo and energy down the road for seo
I'm looking for some clarity... Looking at using Shopify for an existing online store that we have to migrate. Setting up the store with shopify means we will be using a subdomain such as shop.mywebsite.com instead of mywebsite.com/shop. The following are points to consider when responding The client currently has an online store, however it's a proprietary shopping store and CMS that has since gone defunct and they need to migrate to an alternative in order to survive online against new CMS systems that allow the site and its content to be better optimized. There is a lot of existing SEO done on the current site that we don't want to loose PR on. There is roughly 2000 products Client has a fixed budget, dealing with checkout issues, custom work and various other "bugs" seems to be easier controlled with Shopify...thus budget can be used more on content/strategy and migration We want to run the main site in Wordpress and are wanting to use Shopify since it supports a gateway, has great features and seems like it would allow us to get more bang for the buck and can focus more on the main site and content strategy and drive traffic to the subdomain store if needed Or main concern is the effort of migrating 2000+ products to shopify and the traffic and PR it gives the current site will have a negative effect on the main domain itself. Should we really be considering this path? The domain is diveidc.com One main benefit to the subdomain is the ability to clearly segment products from the service portion of the site in the analytics and focus 2 clear strategies and track it in a very defined manner. We're really on the fence with this...any thoughts are welcome.

How to best migrate / rebrand our organisation without losing the SEO on our current website?
I searched the current questions and found similar questions but nothing as specific as what I wanted, so... We are a graphic design school in Melbourne Australia. We have a website - www.graphicschool.com.au - that ranks fairly well in Google for our particular search terms. We have rebranded the organisation and want to change the website domain name to the new branding - www.grenadi.vic.edu.au - but obviously do not want to lose our hard earned SEO and rankings. We only have two strategies so far, and are not sure what the pros and cons to either strategy are, or whether there is a better way. The two ideas we have are: Option 1) Just swap the domain name. We were thinking about swapping the domain name and setting up 301 redirects to tell Google that the old page that ranked well is now this page 'x' on the new site. I've read that you lose all your valuable links doing this because they are domain specific and the 301 doesn't forward your links. Option 2) Build a second website. This idea is that we would build a second website with our new domain name and branding and build up that site until it ranks as highly as the first site and then start to remove the first site. We're planning on completely redeveloping the current website anyway and changing and adding lots more content as well so this option is not out of the question. Any help, thoughts, suggestions or further options would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to discuss. Can I also please suggest that a new category is added under 'The SEO Process' - something like 'rebranding / migration' Cheers, Anthony
