Do old links from my own unrelated subject websites improve or hinder my rankings?
-
Several years ago I placed links on two of my other websites I own and control one my old company about CCTV installation and the other one is the official website for actor Sir Roger Moore.
The links are going to my holiday cottage letting website http://www.endeavourcottage.co.uk/ and at the time I wanted to improve my rankings with these links which are still there. The vast majority of my other inbound links are natural and are on other people's websites with some diversity regarding the anchor text. So my question is the old links on these unrelated subject websites which are also stored on the same web hosting company causing a problem and would it be beneficial to remove them to leave them in place?
Also several years ago I set up two other websites at the same hosting company also promoting holiday cottages in the same place thinking I might have more bites of the cherry, but they've produced very little traffic and are not ranked at all well, but they do links to my main letting website, could these because in a problem?
My domain authority seems to be equal to some of the companies which are higher placed for the short tail keywords on page 1 of Google and they have less inbound links, although they are usually bigger companies and I know many things which influence rankings.
I am trying strategies to improve the rankings, which have dropped to a small degree over recent months.

Thank you for your quick reply, I was watching the whiteboard Friday about links and I know these websites are not spam links in the sense that they been placed on rubbish websites just for the sake of linking, but all the websites are controlled by me and I'm sure Google realises the common connection and I just didn't want the opposite of some kind of penalty because the subjects are completely different of each website and I made the links etc.
I appreciate your comments and I will place some text pointing out the connection from each website back to my holiday letting website

Will it help, sure it will get your site more attention, and rank probably a little better, but due to the lack of relevancy don't expect the world of it. But if they are your own site, maybe you could create a page where you talk a bit more about the relation between company X and Y and then link to it to make the relevancy a bit better.

Traffic, rankings and own manual note in one interface, please :)
Hey guys, I really hope that such a tool exists out there. Here's the problem. My boss asked me to create a graph that shows the traffic, rankings and notes on our site updates in one place. Here's what I did I just made a screenshot of my Google analytics and rankings from RankTracker. Then I added it all in one Photoshop file and tried to combine them so that I can see if traffic drops coincided with keyword drops. Also, I added some manual notes about the updates on my site (like text updates on the homepage, etc). So, is there a tool that allows to combine Google traffic data with ranking data. Plus it should allow to add my own comments ? Here's the result of my crazy drawings so that you understand why I'm not happy about doing that in Photoshop 🙂 https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B_oX-XIT7OSCRC1jWUcxR3AwdkE/edit?usp=drive_web

Google still showing sitelinks from old website
Hi guys, we relaunched our website www.segafredo.com.au a few weeks ago, however google is still showing site links from our old page that no longer exist... Is there anything we can do about this? Sit back and wait or try demoting the old urls in webmaster tools? Looking forward to see your tips! Ciao, Manny.

Penguin 2.0 Update - Just Hit - Google Messes up again, can anyone on SEOMOZ please tell me why or how some of these websites are ranking?
I am getting a bit tired now writing all of this so please excuse grammar and spelling mistakes, I wanted to post this up quickly tonight so I could possibly get some feedback by morning. So I feel I figured out some of the new update that just hit and I am sure the update will continue to keep coming and rankings will most likely change for a while, but I do have a few questions in the mean time if they stay. Please look below, why would some of those sites be ranking? Some sites utilize no onpage SEO, some no backlinks, one of the sites is a single page site and every page is a broken link even the contact us page and it's rank 1..... I am not 100% sure that Google got this one right. I see many instances below where other sites are much higher quality and have more authority. It's as if Google took terrible sites and said here is a site for you, now deal with it and I hope it works out at the top. I do see several sites that belong on the first page, but I see others that are very questionable. This is how the following is written below. Before the url is the anchor text density % for the site. This indicates the percentage of the amount of times the anchor text was backlined versus other anchor texts they used. Issues with the sites. Most of these sites don't utilize onpage SEO and it's clearly not a factor for onpage density purposes, there is a site with 37% keyword density on it. Some sites even have broken links. Please note: I already know that there is a lot of data that is analyzed to determine rankings more than this, but PA/DA is suppose to be a major factor according to everyone that believes in SEOMOZ.org. So I am taking in account for many of those factors being calculated due to this. These are just some random keywords I picked, because I know you need to analyze other SEO firms after and update to figure out what lasted and what didn't. All of my sites lasted due to ethical tactics, but I had some rankings move down and others go up, very odd. The onpage SEO is sloppy and the writing looks forced. Why is this even ranking? The site also looks low quality. The density is higher than SEOMOZ even and it has less words. "Links To Your Site" In Webmaster Tools
How often does Google update the "links to your site" data. It seems that it has been static for about a month now even though we have made a lot of changes Does anyone have any idea? If you have made changes to your links (i.e removed links, updated anchor text, etc.), do you have to wait for this information to be updated to measure the impact? Or is that whenever Google crawls those pages/sites and sees changes there is a adjustment. Thanks

Help ranking for a keyword
So I found a keyword that is labeled as "Low Competive" on Google Adwords. About a week and a half ago I optimized the page using the SEOMOZ On-Page optimization tool. It says that I am 100% with everything. My website is new but it has been around for about a year. I haven't gotten into linking and the more in depth SEO. After doing some searches though I noticed a lot of other new website that are atleast ranking in the top 50 for certain keywords, so I figured I could get my page to rank atleast in the top 1000 for this "Low Competitive" keyword. Could someone take a look and see if maybe I over optimized it or did something that would make this keyword not rank even in the top 1000 on google? Any advise is appreciated. I am obviously very new to SEO, but I am someone that likes to do and learn everything for myself. Thanks in advance! The keyword is: Nitro Monster Truck The web page is: http://www.rcnitroshop.com/nitro-monster-truck

Is their value in building your own website network?
--- I am moving this into open discussion to see if I can get a few more responses, I am very curious if anyone has experience in this area --- Hello, As a resource for my link building strategies I have often wondered if building my own 'web network' of sites would prove to be valuable in link building. For example, if I were targeting the travel industry (or insert a niche here) and created 30 websites on various related topics in the industry, would using outbound links from those sites to other relevant websites help increase domain authority? Obviously, I would need to avoid creating unusable sites with boilerplate content just for the sole purpose of linking. I am envisioning working websites/blogs that would be valuable on their own. Some thoughts and questions that have crossed my mind: If these sites are all hosted on the same server, would the link exchange end up in penalization in the SERPs? Being that the sites are designed to be quality sites on their own, can they share links between themselves if the links are relevant? This is already being done across the web, but what makes one network valuable and 'quality' vs another Being a web dev / host as well as SEO guy I would like to utilize those resources to create a network that is of quality and of value, but am not sure about things appearing 'unnatural'... It seems that the majority of link building falls into the 'unnatural' category as we as SEOs are constantly trying to place our links throughout the web vs. site owners linking naturally back to a website
