Are website optimization and conversion rate optimization roughly the same thing?
-
This is mostly a semantics question, but I also want to check that I have a basic understanding of the two concepts. Are the two terms more or less interchangeable or are there any crucial differences?
I always thought of website optimization as the complementary partner to SEO. While the ultimate goal of SEO is getting people TO your website, website optimization is focused on refining your website so that those people STAY on your website.
When I think of conversion rate optimization, I'd imagine that's pretty much the same goal. Refining a website so that more people stay and ultimately convert (buy something, subscribe to a newsletter, etc).
Is my understanding of one (or both) of them flawed, or is it six of one, half a dozen of the other? Thanks!

Well, I would add the conversion rate optimization does not necessarily have to mean "get the user to buy something." It could be to make a phone call, signup for a newsletter, etc. So, it really is about choosing something you want a user to do, implementing a strategy to get the user to do that...then seeing what percentage of users actually do...then improving it as best you can (most likely through A/B testing).
Website optimization...I don't think it has a standard definition. Monica said "umbrella term for SEO and CRO" and I guess that works, but I've heard it relate to a number of other aspects like site speed and social media plugins. I view it more as a buzzword for marketing companies to sell their "all-in-one" campaign packages than something with a specific definition.
Best,
Ruben

I think that website optimization is kind of the umbrella term for SEO and CRO. Optimizing you website for search engines and for searchers really.
The goal of CRO is to get people buying on your site. You change layouts, move phone numbers, increase call to actions in order to drive your traffic to make purchases. I believe CRO is almost equally, if not more, important than SEO. Driving traffic is an art, and converting them is the gallery where you sell those paintings.
I could be wrong, but, this is how I see it

Any possibility to track goal completions/conversions at a sub-page (non-landing page) level in Google Analytics?
We’re promoting our sub-page it's http://www.flightcentre.ca/flights/london on our homepage under the slideshow so I need to see how many people went to the homepage, then went to this page, and then converted (enquired or booked.) What I can’t see is how many people did that. I know how to look up how many people landed on that page and then converted, but I need to know how many people navigated there and then converted. Is that possible? I can only see Goal Completions if I look at that page as a landing page, but that only presents a very slim view of the total visits when compared to those pages generally. Any way to check the entire behavior or activities happening through this page i.e. /flights/london?

Hi all, Was wondering if based on your experience you could recommend E-commerce customer reviews/ratings solutions? Or if you prefer to use in-house built solutions. I currently have proposals from bazaarvoice, Shopzilla and Reevoo. Cheers

Can fun, slightly unprofessional text be good for conversion rates?
I operate on a freemium model. Â The three plans are currently called "Free", "Gold" and "Platinum". Â Besides being incredibly square and boring, these titles are also meaningless. I'm doing a slight redesign of my site, and the new (unreleased) site has a very fun, playful feel. Â I'm also trying to make everything more streamlined and obvious. Â I'm considering renaming the three plans "Boring Amateur", "Kick-Ass Amateur" and "Bona Fide Professional" on the registration page and simply "Boring", "Kick-Ass" and "Professional" elsewhere. Â There are lots of places on the site where I have to refer to "amateurs" vs "professionals" - these tags would make that easier to explain. Easier = more sales. What do you think about using unprofessional text like this? Â Is it too risky, possibly offending too many people and losing sales? Â Or is it a good eye-catcher? I know the best answer is "test it." Â But this is one of those changes that I don't want to have to put my users through too many times. Thanks for any thoughts!

Conversion optimization with Optimizely, impact on SEO
I am looking into signing up with www.optimizely.com for conversion testing. They put scripting on my site which will then redirect half of my site visitors to an alternate home page. The site I want to test on is ranking quite well with Google and I do not want to hurt my rankings. And with this set up,what Google will think is my home page is not and so I am essentially sending visitors to a different page than Google reads as my home page in source code. So, my concern is whether this will have a negative impact on my SEO rankings to redirect 50% of site visitors to a different page using this testing tool? I would use Google Web Site Optimizer, but many of my sites are in Wordpress and it seems that Wordpress and web site optimizer are not so compatible. Advice would be appreciated. Thank you, Robert

Unfortunately now my bounce is going up..... because online games really has nothing to do with Concrete Pumps and Pump Parts.... go figure. What is a logical next step to correct the problem. Thank You!

Ideal product page conversion/retention rate for eCommerce sites
Hi SEOmoz-ers, I was wondering if anyone has data regarding product page abandonment rate (% of potential customers that leave the site after seeing product pages) for websites like Overstock, REI or Zappos? As you may know the above mentioned sites do an exceptional job with product pages. It would be helpful to know what some of the leaders in this space are achieving in terms of conversion rate. What is your personal opinion about this? Thanks,
