I am looking into signing up with www.optimizely.com for conversion testing.  They put scripting on my site which will then redirect half of my site visitors to an alternate home page.  The site I want to test on is ranking quite well with Google and I do not want to hurt my rankings.

And with this set up,what Google will think is my home page is not and so I am essentially sending visitors to a different page than Google reads as my home page in source code.

So, my concern is whether this will have a negative impact on my SEO rankings to redirect 50% of site visitors to a different page using this testing tool?

I would use Google Web Site Optimizer, but many of my sites are in Wordpress and it seems that Wordpress and web site optimizer are not so compatible.

    Advice would be appreciated.

    Thank you,

    Robert

I realise this response is almost a year old, but I've only just found it. I am about to start using Optimizely, but am concerned about affecting my ranking especially now that we have a new Penguin update due any time now.

The nice guy at Optimizely told me today (during the webinar for newbies) that you could use Optimizely to permanently direct different sorts of visitors to different content. For example, he pointed out that people who today run IE 6 are very different from people who run IE 9. And depending on your market it might make sense to give those two groups different messaging.  But Google specifically say don't deliver different content based on user-agent.

http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.co.uk/2012/08/website-testing-google-search.html  And on the last point in that article, how long is too long?

Thank you for all of your responses.  Dan Siroker, nice to see you responding- too thank you.  I suppose I am left with that if I do use/need the function in Optimizely where I need to re-route to new url is to potentially use rel-canonical and block the second page in robot.txt.   I feel that for basic landing page testing, I would not re-route and Optimizely seems like a great and easy solution and I will use it.  For tests which would require re-routing, I am thinking perhaps Google optimizer is better because I am confident they will not penalize for re-route when they are the ones doing it.  Dan, if you feel different, I'd be happy to get on phone to chat.  Thank you all.  Best,  Robert

Yes, I've used Optimizely, and Ryan is completely correct in that  you only create one page, just add javascript to make it different views for different visitors.

            Hi Robert,

This is a great question. You are right that there are a few ways to run an experiment with Optimizely. The default and easiest way to get up and running is to run an experiment on the same URL without redirecting to another page. Alternatively you can redirect to another URL. Customers commonly use both techniques and neither will negatively impact SEO.

Here is a more detailed explanation of how Optimizely affects SEO: http://support.optimizely.com/kb/advanced/does-optimizely-affect-my-search-ranking-or-seo

Here is Google's stance on this: http://www.google.com/support/websiteoptimizer/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=63382

Hope that helps answer your question!

            Thanks,

            Dan Siroker

            Co-Founder & CEO, Optimizely

Then you'll want to ask him if that necessitates a separate URL. If it does, you should rel=canonical the test page to point at the original home page, and noindex the test page to avoid any duplicate content situations.

You may also want to run this by the optimizely guys to see what their thoughts are, since they'll know exactly how their technology is altering your site.

Hi Ryan, thank you for response.  There are two ways to test with them.  The type of testing I would want to do would apparently (according to sales guy) require an alternative landing/home page.

My understanding is that the same URL is used for both test and control versions of your home page, meaning its not actually redirecting. Instead the changes are inserted using the javascript code dynamically. I'm not sure whether Google ignores the javascript change or incorporates it. Either way your test changes should be done with both SEO and user experience in mind, so don't run tests that would hurt your SEO and you'll be golden.

Can Very High Impressions and 0% Organic CTR Impact our SEO Rankings?

I have a very strange feeling that someone bad is trying to hurt our company, but maybe I am wrong. Let me explain. In the last two month, we have seen a very significant drop in sales on our website, but we couldn't figure out why. We have looked at different metrics (Google Search Console, Moz, Google Analytics), but everything looked alright. We had 10% loss in traffic, but we didnt believe at the time that it could be the main issue. Just yesterday we've discovered the following (please see attached screenshot😞 On August 18, 2018 Google launched Search Update On the same date, we had a jump in Organic Search Impressions for one particular keyword, which we never tracked before: "free facebook login". Majority of all impressions (233,000 out of 258,000) were from Philippines. Very low total number of clicks (50 clicks) led to 0% Average CTR for this keyword. Which in return, also lowered our global CTR by 1%. One month later we had 1000's of spam emails sent to our Helpdesk from two IP addresses, also from Philippines. We blocked them of course. It could be all coincidence. I dont know. But do you think that someone can use this fraudulent tactic to lower our CTR and drop our ranking and traffic? Can this influence our SEO in any way? It's also possible that someone is attacking Facebook and we just happen to be there, on the first page, for the same keyword. Should we try to eliminate our page for this keyword and see what happens? I've checked this article from Rand Fishkin - https://moz.com/blog/impact-of-queries-and-clicks-on-googles-rankings-whiteboard-friday and it seems that CTR is an important factor. However the article is from 2015 and maybe it's no longer relevant. What should we do? Thanks! G86Nge4

Will Landing Page Design with Large Areas of White Background Enjoy a Higher Conversion Rate?

My designer has created a landing page with a dark background. Text is white and other colors. Does a dark background impact the conversion rate? Is it better to have a white background? I am concerned that a dark background may distract visitors. The landing page is: http://www.nyc-officespace-leader.com/MidtownLawOfficeSublet3300SFBelowMarket We plan on using this landing page for LinkedIn advertising. Thanks!!

Weighted number of conversions - any explanation?

Do any of you know meaning of "weighted number of conversions" in attribution models? How google analytics calculate it? Any example? Thank you.

Large changes in conversions with consistent traffic

Hi Everyone, I am looking for some help, I have just taken over a campaign for a client and we are seeing huge changes in conversion rates overnight. The client is selling a health product and is consistently getting around 1-2k visitors per day. We are getting about 6% of the traffic to the buy page consistently. However, we have found that one day the order process may convert 1/20 of these visitors and another day it could be 1/80. We are only talking about 5-20 sales per day, but I am really confused why one day it can convert so well and another so poorly. The traffic being sent is the same and all other factors are the same (no split testing). There seems to be no logic, the day of the week does not seem to impact, it almost seems random. If anybody has any recommended places to look that would be very helpful as at the moment I am at a loss. Example: Sunday 15th Visitors: 1,279
                    Order Page: 240
                    Sales: 3
                    Declines: 3 Monday 16th Visitors: 1,407
                    Order Page: 323
                    Sales: 17
                    Declines: 5

Is it possible to set a Goal conversion tracking from a subdomain to a root domain?

Hi Mozzers, Here is an issue I am going through: I have a root domain(www.example.com) that is the core website where you are able to schedule a service I have a subdomain (sub.example.om) that is part of content strategy offering free tips and follows a different branding strategy. There are internal links from sub to root domain I have a GA subdomain tracking code installed on every page for both domains I would love to set goal tracking on GA for visitors coming to my subdomain, then going to root domain and then schedule a sevices? Is  this possible? If it is, can someone show me a How To because I tried it anddidn't work? Thanks mozzers!

How to track full path of website visitors until conversion, not just landing page?

hi, This is my first question in the forums and I'm looking forward to be part of a great SEO community. I was wondering ow to track full path of website visitors until conversion, not just landing page? I've been using Wordpress jetpack site stats for while, which shows great data like keywords used in google, landing page etc. But I would like to have access to the full path for each separate visitors (including their IP address and country is possible) to improve my website and conversions. Example: step 1: Visitor X types "seo" on Google step 2: visitor lands on my homepage step 3: visitor visits to order page and buys Is there such tool available as a Wordpress plugin? Or do I have to use Google analytics for this? thank you for your help, Marc

Advice on SEO for Chinese Website in China

Hey folks, I am a little out of my depth here because I have never SEO'd a website that is not in English - and especially in China. I have a few questions that I hope someone can help with? What are the primary SE's in China Are there any specifics with regards Keyword Research Are there any specifics around SEO techniques and climbing up the SERPs? I know I don't speak Chinese but I will need to be advising. Thanks, Andy

Low conversion rate, high ticket item... but not THAT high

Oh great mozzers, I fall at your feet... I feel like I'm going insane... My client, 35 Degrees (http://35DegreesSteaks.com) is quite the mystery.  I handle SEO and paid search for them, and we're doing great in those areas... however, we're just not seeing the conversions once I deliver these folks to the site. The people are targeted, the keywords are sound, and from what I can see, the checkout process isn't a mess... but they are just not getting the sales. We're currently starting to test some price points with some newer, lower cost "intro packages", so we'll see if that's one of the pain points.  I'm also in the process of convincing them to include a Verisign or some other logo in the checkout process. However, I was hoping the great minds here could take a quick look and see if I'm missing anything else. Thanks in advance! Jeff
