Site´s Architecture - Categories . What´s the best in my case?
-
My Dear friends of MOZ, I´ve got you a case that has been driving me crazy for 2 weeks, Im doing an SEO audit for big brand that sells electronics.
Since they sell all kind of electronics, and are very popular the site is quite big and has several categories.
Now...Im working particularly in a kind of micro-site that sells two kind of products that are very similar but not the same. Lets say in this site they are selling super-light-weight-Laptops and tablets, so if you look the site its a Laptop/Tablet site. But the site is not under a laptop/tablet directory, some pages are under laptop and others in Tablet directory .
For example : Home page URL: /light-laptops/home.asp ; Products general page page URL is light-pads/products.asp ; and each single product page is under laptops or pads according the type of product.
From my point of view, they should create a new directory called /light-laptops-pads/ and single directories for products, and case studies, etc.. Since they want to show both products together when you click in products (off course they will be creating sub-directories for the two types of products).
At the begining I thought they were really mistaken, but now that I see that all light-pad content is in one folder and light-laptops content is in another, and the site jumps from one category to the other I am a little bit confused. PLEASE HELP ME
PD: I want to make clear that general categories like products, case studies , contact us, solutions pages are in some cases under /light-pad/ directory and in other cases under /light-laptops / directory
PLEASE PARDON MY ENGLISH!

Yes, it would be better to have all of your domain authority under one main domain name, instead of spreading it thinly using subdomains.
Thanks,

Hi Jeff,
Thanks a lot for your answers, I have read also the answers to the other threads you referred me.
I dont want to abuse from your time and kindnes, but I ve got one more question. The idea of creating a subdomain started circuling my mind, though Im not sure about this universe.
Like Vice and Mic I bring two cases to the table, but both are using subdomains in this case. www.mercadolibre.com (latinamerican Amazon) and sony.com .
Sony uses store.com for all their products listing, support.sony for support and sony.com for main navigation pages.
Mercado Libre uses listado.mercadolibre.com for most of their products and autos(cars).mercadolibre.com or ropa.mercadolibre.com for really important categories like clothes and cars ( that would bring Mercado Libre more revenue than other categories, I think is where they are more focused in).
Now I always thought the same way Matt Cutts explains in his article about subdomain, it should be made for keywords that aren´t too related to domain´s keywords. I remember creating an insurance subdomain for a brokerage firm.
The domain authority of the domain Im working in is already 92 I understand SEO efforts will only have repercussions in subdomain, but as I said domain authority is already 92 . On the other hand I should add another folder, and the site structure is already a little bit long, while using a subdomain will save me using at least one folder less.
Hope you can give me a hand with this.
Best Wishes.

So, if this is a huge brand name with a high domain authority... it honestly won't matter as much how their category and URL structure is set up.
However, if they are using two different directories with specific information about each product, this would be fine as well. I think that having a site with two big / strong categories, but no general categories should be okay, especially if their DA is really strong.
Hope this helps!

Thanks a lot Jeff, really helpful information.
This brand is also a manufacturer, as big as Sony. I understand your way you would proceed with this and I have the same approach, but if we follow an intuitive architecture of categories, the one they are using is not that wrong, altough not all the categories correspond to the same microsite .
Let me be a little bit more graphical :
/ Business /directory
/light-laptops/ displayed in microsite A
/light-tablets/ displayed in microsite A
/projectors/ displayed in microsite b
/4k-displays/displayed in microsite c
I dont really know how wrong its what they are doing. If tomorrow they come up with more "light tablets" info they will host it in /light-laptops/ I know this is not classic SEO, but do you think this structure would affect rankings?
Questions:
Yes, they don t have one directory including both products at the same time, but they have two different directories with Specific info about each product. (also including products, contact and home page since there is no general directory for both categories) You think this wouldn t be a right way to divide categories?
Do you think having a site like they have with two big and strong categories and no general categories would affect SEO?
Thanks a lot!

Microsites can either be a separate domain name (i.e. www.domain-light-tablet-laptops.com) or a subdirectory off of your existing domain (i.e. www.domain.com/light-tablet/)
It sounds like you're going with the subdirectory option for the microsite. I think that this will be helpful, and add more SEO value to the microsite. Here's a link to a post on subdomains vs. subdirectories:
http://moz.com/community/q/revisited-the-subdomain-vs-subdirectory-questionMy recommendation, if you are to use a sub-directory, would be to have one top level, such as:
www.domain.com/light-tablets-laptops/If you don't need to have the home.asp, that might be better... but that's going to depend on your site and page system settings.
For your categories, you might go with:
www.domain.com/light-tablets-laptops/manufacturer/And for your product, you might go with:
www.domain.com/light-tablets-laptops/manufacturer/tablet-XYZ/For the contact page, I'd go with:
www.domain.com/light-tablets-laptops/contact/Hope this helps!
Thanks,

Which is the best way to rank a site?
Hi, I have been working on SEO for a long time, recently I started a new site where I was aiming to rank different niches but I am stuck. First I covered some keywords related to sports then I shifted the niche to hunting. My idea was to cover a niche fully then move on to the 2nd so the authority of the site can also help rank the 2nd niche but the problem is I am unable to rank my site. Should I be considering only a very specific niche site or should I continue doing all the stuff on the same site. Please checkout my site ReviewsCase.com and let me know. And if has also done the same please let me know.

In one site a 3rd party is asking visitors to give feedback via pop-up that covers 30-50% of the bottom of the screen, depending on screen size. Is the 3rd party or the site in danger of getting penalized after the intrusive interstitial guidelines?
I am wondering whether the intrusive interstitial penalty affects all kinds of pop-ups regardless of their nature, eg if a third party is asking feedback through a discreet pop-up that appears from the bottom of the screen and covers max 50% of it. Is the site or the third party who is asking the feedback subject to intrusive interstitial penalty? Also is the fact that in some screens the popup covers 30% and in some others 50% plays any role?

Condensing content for web site redesign
We're working on a redesign and are wondering if we should condense some of the content (as recommended by an agency), and if so, how that will affect our organic efforts. Currently a few topics have individual pages for each section, such as (1) Overview (2) Symptoms and (3) Treatment. For reference, the site has a similar structure to http://www.webmd.com/heart-disease/guide/heart-disease-overview-fact. Our agency has sent us over mock-ups which show these topics being condensed into one and using a script/AJAX to display only the content that is clicked on. Knowing this, if we were to choose this option, that would result in us having to implement redirects because only one page would exist, instead of all three. Can anyone provide insight into whether we should keep the topic structure as is, or if we should take the agency's advice and merge all the topic content? *Note: The reason the agency is pushing for the merging option is because they say it helps with page load time. Thank you in advance for any insight! Tcd5Wo1.jpg

How much link juice does a sites homepage pass to inner pages and influence inner page rankings?
Hi, I have a question regarding the power of internal links and how much link juice they pass, and how they influence search engine ranking positions. If we take the example of an ecommerce store that sells kites. Scenario 1 It can be assumed that it is easier for the kite ecommerce store to earn links to its homepage from writing great content on its blog, as any blogger that will link to the content will likely use the site name, and homepage as anchor text. So if we follow this through, then it can be assumed that there will eventually be a large number of high quality backlinks pointing to the sites homepage from various high authority blogs that love the content being posted on the sites blog. The question is how much link juice does this homepage pass to the category pages, and from the category pages then to the product pages, and what influence does this have on rankings? I ask because I have seen strong ecommerce sites with very strong DA or domain PR but with no backlinks to the product page/category page that are being ranked in the top 10 of search results often, for the respective category and product pages. It therefore leads me to assume that internal links must have a strong determiner on search rankings... Could it therefore also be assumed that a site with a PR of 5 and no links to a specific product page, would rank higher than a site with a PR of 1 but with 100 links pointing to the specific product page? Assuming they were both trying to rank for the same product keyword, and all other factors were equal. Ie. neither of them built spammy links or over optimised anchor text? Scenario 2 Does internal linking work both ways? Whereas in my above example I spoke about the homepage carrying link juice downward to the inner category and product pages. Can a powerful inner page carry link juice upward to category pages and then the homepage. For example, say the blogger who liked the kite stores blog content piece linked directly to the blog content piece from his site and the kite store blog content piece was hosted on www.xxxxxxx.com/blog/blogcontentpiece As authority links are being built to this blog content piece page from other bloggers linking to it, will it then pass link juice up to the main blog category page, and then the kite sites main homepage? And if there is a link with relevant anchor text as part of the blog content piece will this cause the link juice flowing upwards to be stronger? I know the above is quite winded, but I couldn't find anywhere that explains the power of internal linking on SERP's... Look forward to your replies on this....

Using a sites custom code for multiple websites: good or bad?
Is it bad to utilize a custom codebase for multiple websites? Does that play a factor within Google? Also, what about hosting sites with the same custom codebase on the same dedicated server?

Post penguin & panda update. what would be a good seo strategies for brand new sites
Hi there. I have the luxury of launching a few sites after the penguin and panda updates, so I can start from scratch and hopefully do it right. I will get SEO companies to help me with this so i just want to ask for advices on what would be a good strategies for a brand new site. my understand of the new updates is this content and user experience is important, like how long they spend, how many pages etc social media is important. we intent to engage FB and twitter alot. in New Zealand, not too many people use google+ so we will probbaly just concentrate on the first two hopefully we will try to get people to share our website via social media, apparent that is important should only concentrate on high quality backlinks with a good diverse set of alt tags, but concentrate on branding rather than keywords. Am i correct to say that so far? if that is the principle, what would be the strategy to implement these goals? Links to any articles would also be great please. Love learning. i just want to do this right and hopefully try to future proof the sites against updates as possible. i guess quality content and links will most likely to be safe. Thank you for your help.

Best way to find new studies?
I'm wondering how sites break news without dedicating too much time researching. Are there any tools that you use? For example, if you wanted to be one of the first people to know when a celebrity was diagnosed with a health condition, how would you go about doing that?
