Redirects for new site new urls?

If redoing a site and updating some of the url's for SEO should you do permanent redirects for the old sites url's ?
Using WordPress. I saw that the Yoast Pro plugin allows you to do this inside WordPress , is this the best way?
Suggestions.? I know there are old articles written out on the web pointing back to the what will be soon old url's so just wondering what's the best way to go about this.
Thanks Scott

Ok, where kind I find the existing? Moz Reports now that he has like 39 Tempory redirects. is there a way to see whats pointing to what?
I don't have access via ftp to his current site and hosting provider yet. Just building the site on a .info them going to transfer all the files over to the .com when ready.

Scott, you're really going to want to do this in htaccess. Especially if there are existing redirects from a previous version of the site. You'll need to replace those old redirects with new ones that are both permanent, and that point directly to the new relevant pages. (In order to insure that you're not creating unnecessary multiple-hop redirects).
The other reason is that redirects in htaccess are faster and use fewer server resources than trying to do it within WordPress. Not a big deal if you only have a few redirects, but if you're handling the large number involved in dealing with a new site architecture, htaccess is the way to go.

Ok Thanks, yea i am just building it on a dot.info and then going to update the files on his .com and since some of the url's are not seo friendly and the nav structure is changing will need to do this.
Yes htaccess can be a pain sometimes. Thanks for your input. The Moz crawl says he has 36 temporary redirects right now. maybe they did the same thing I am doing for a prior site to what I am doing. Maybe I need to see which url's they are redirecting somehow and include those for permanent redirects also?

When updating URLs on a site or transferring your site to a new domain name where you want older, existing content to still work, you should configure a permanent (301) redirect for each of the pages or sections that will contain a new url.
You'll want to use a temporary or 302 redirect if the page will only redirect for a short period of time.
I'm not familiar with the Yoast Pro plugin, but it seems like this would work. Just make sure that they utilize the proper redirect method (301 vs 302) when configuring the plugin.
Another option would be to configure the .htaccess file in the root web directory, but this isn't for the faint of heart if you're not familiar with configuring a web server!

If you have new pages which have the same or similar content as the old pages, those old pages should be redirected to the new ones. If you are to use a ready made plugin or go for the traditional way thats up to you.

What should my site name be?
Hello, I'm a physical therapy clinic in Fort Myers, FL. Currently my website is named "Physical Therapy Fort Myers". My company name is Back In Motion Sport & Spine Physical Therapy. My question is, should I rename my site under my business name or is it OK to keep it as "physical therapy fort myers"?

Www no longer redirects
Hi there, A while back I dropped the www from my domain. Everything redirected ok and I could still access my site using www and it would simply redirect to http://mysite This no longer seems to be occurring. I don't think I have changed anything? I don't believe I had anything in my htaccess however I am looking for some assistance in doing so. I've done a bit of reading but am not 100% confident! If anyone is interested, the url is http://cdkeyprices.com Thanks

To change or not to change site URL structure?
I am learning my way around SEO, having always used professionals for it in the past on previous businesses i have decided to do it myself and learn more about it. Now the dilemma i am up against is i recently changed some of my permalinks on quite a few main pages throughout the site. The site launched in April this year so we're quite new. The problem is since my last change i have not seen any increase...a decrease which in fact hasn't recovered at all. Having now analysed them in more depth and read up more on the whole subject of SEO, (which is endless) i have put together a complete new strategy; with this increased understanding of what i am doing (but by no means conclusive) i want to complete a full overhaul on all SEO (via Wordpress which i use along with YOAST SEO tools), ensuring i have all my keywords, permalinks and descriptions spot on throughout every page, post and picture. I spent a lot of time mapping these out, ensuring there is no Focus keyword duplication, and that the site is relatively flat in terms of its layout. What i am unsure about now is whether changing my permalinks again is a bad thing to do?

Could it permanently damage my rep going forward?
Should i just focus on my content and keywords/descriptions? I am at a loss as i don't want to do irreparable damage to our reputation. The site is still reasonable easy to manage so changing now is the best time to do it, but if changing the URLs is a waste of time then i may just forget that and just work on the keywords, descriptions and content. Advice is 'oh so welcome' 🙂0 -
Why Isnt My New Article Indexed?
I posted this article last night: http://www.londontri.com/325/tomtom-runner-gps-watch-review It didn't appear in Google's index this morning despite me pointing a few high quality links to it (not keyword optimized links, just links from high quality forum posts) On closer examination I thought that the problem could be due to a keyword stuffing penalty so I have made sure that I am not repeating too many words/word combinations using a keyword density checker but the article is still not indexed. Any ideas what could be going on?

Temp redirects of homepage URLs
Working on a site for a client and the CMS provider has all variants of their domain (.co.uk & .com and / and http:// etc) temp redirecting to the /default.aspx homepage. I know in theory that this means no Google Juice is being passed to the final location page, does this mean that all backlinks that point to their domain are not actually passing Juice onto the homepage? Thanks

SEOMOZ crawler ignoring redirect?
My crawl report for www.poker-coaching.net show a number of duplicate content warnings.
On-Page Optimization | | CatfishTPA
First, it shows a warning for www.poker-coaching.net and www.poker-coaching.net/, although there is a redirect in place for this, and for non-www. to www. as well. So IMO there is no duplicate content here, so why the error message?
Next, it shows a duplicate content warning for a number of pages, but when I click the number on the right, there is no info an which pages contain the duplicate content. Will this info be there later when the crawl is completed? My problem is that this is my oldest site, but since over one year it seems to have a penalty which I can't get rid of - I cannot identify the reason for the penalty. I already rebuilt the site from scratch once, but I still do not see results. If a membership at SEOMOZ would be able to help me bring this site back on track, that would already be worth one years membership fees, so I'd really be very thankful if someone could take a look at the site and give me an idea about what needs to be done here.0 -
