How to make sure dev site is not index in wordpress and how would it be affected?

hi guys!
I'm currently having a dev version of my site (dev.website.com) that once everything is done i would move the dev to the public domain (website.com). But since is a total duplicate content of my real site would it affect the seo? if so, i tried setting the reading privacy in wordpress so google would not index it but im afraid when i live it in the future and revert the setting back to normal it would affect the site seo.
any opinion and suggestion on this?

If you add a host name with your registrar the site then becomes available for everyone in the world. Even with a login you could have some leakage.
If your site is set up to only answer to http://test.sitename.com and the only place you put the translation for that is in your local host file there is no opportunity for leakage. You don't have to worry about trying to block access other ways.

what if i add a login in the front page just like leonie said? i assume it wont be index?

why not? isnt host name in dns a better choice? thats what im doing now

Don't register the host name in DNS. Just use local host file on your pc's for your development and testing processes.

Hi Andrew,
I would go with what you said originally. "noindex" the dev site (dev.website.com) then when you switch the site live, turn off "noindex". You won't get any SEO issues from doing this. The only possible issue you will get is if you forget to turn of "noindex" when the site goes live
This will be a big problem so don't forget to turn it off!Cheers

Might want to add the dev site to Webmaster Tools so you can easily remove any pages that do get indexed.

Hi, to be sure your dev site is not indexed put it behind a login / password. As google can't login to your site, google can't index it.
In WP you did the right thing, when you put your site live make sure you use a seo plugin (Yoast) and use canonical tag, to avoid duplicate content. https://yoast.com/wordpress/plugins/seo/

Technical Site Migration
Hello All- I have been in the SEO industry for about 4 years and feel fairly confident in my technical SEO; however, I am being asked to conduct a migration that is both a platform change (step 1) then a consolidation change (think of combining websites when a company is acquired) all within a 4-5 month time span. I feel like as I begin to create this multi-step checklist I would love to hear of others that have gone through something similar or have resources you could point me to form more of a process/procedure standpoint. Again - I feel confident in the technical output but I have a fairly junior team and want to execute this smoothly. What is the easiest way to make AMP pages with Wordpress?
Hi Mozzers! I really want to start created AMP pages for my clients sites, but have found a lot of trouble with the top plugins. One was extremely confusing and the other most popular option for a free plugin was super basic and had virtually no customization options. What's the best way to create these for a non developer? Only the mobile version of the site is being indexed
We've got an interesting situation going on at the moment where a recently on-boarded clients site is being indexed and displayed, but it's on the mobile version of the site that is showing in serps. A quick rundown of the situation. Retail shopping center with approximately 200 URLS Mobile version of the site is www.mydomain.com/m/ XML sitemap submitted to Google with 202 URLs, 3 URLS indexed Doing site:www.mydomain.com in a Google search brings up the home page (desktop version) and then everything else is /m/ versions. There is no rel="canonical" on mobile site pages to their desktop counterpart (working on fixing that) We have limited CMS access, but developers are open to working with us on whatever is needed. Within desktop site source code, there are no "noindex, nofollow, etc" issues on the pages. No manual actions, link issues, etc Has anyone ever encoutnered this before? Any input or thoughts are appreciated. Thanks

Large Site - Complete Site URL Change and How to Preserver Organic Rankings/Traffic
Hello Community, What is your experience with site redesign when it comes to preserving the traffic? If a large enterprise website has to go through a site-wide enhancement (resulting in change of all URLs and partial content), what do you expect from Organic rankings and traffic? To index search results or to not index search results?
What are your feelings about indexing search results? I know big brands can get away with it (yelp, ebay, etc). Apart from UGC, it seems like one of the best ways to capture long tail traffic at scale. If the search results offer valuable / engaging content, would you give it a go?

Wordpress blog in a subdirectory not being indexed by Google
HI MozzersIn my websites sitemap.xml, pages are listed, such as /blog/ and /blog/textile-fact-or-fiction-egyptian-cotton-explained/These pages are visible when you visit them in a browser and when you use the Google Webmaster tool - Fetch as Google to view them (see attachment), however they aren't being indexed in Google, not even the root directory for the blog (/blog/) is being indexed, and when we query:site: www.hilden.co.uk/blog/ It returns 0 results in Google.Also note that:The Wordpress installation is located at /blog/ which is a subdirectory of the main root directory which is managed by Magento.
