Impressions data: Google Webmaster Tools VS Google AdWords
-
Dear community,
I was doing some research within Google Webmaster Tools (WMT) keyword data when I noticed that the impressions within this tool are quite different compared to the keyword impression data provided by Google AdWords (ADW).
Some specs about the situation:
-
Date: December 2014 (31 days).
-
Keyword: brand + main keyword* (e.g. amazon shoes, if Amazon would have been the client)
-
Visitors come from: the Netherlands (>97%).
-
Search volume: 3,8 K for this branded keyword last year (December 2013), of which >99% came from the Netherlands (source: Google Keyword Planner).
-
Search query data: "impressions" for Google WMT (organic keyword impressions) and “impressions” for Google ADW (paid keyword impressions).
-
Of course the ADW keyword is [exact].
So, what's wrong? The data doesn’t match, while I expected approximately the same amount of impressions assuming the keywords are:
- both [exact] keywords; (check! ✓)
- within the same period of time; (check! ✓)
- the Ad is being displayed "all the time" (check! ✓)
- the domain/page is being indexed "all the time" (check! ✓)
How much of a difference is there?
- Organic impressions: 7,4 K (source: Google WMT)
- Paid impressions: 2,1 K (source: Google ADW)
Note that the search volume according to Google Keyword Planner of last year is somewhere in between: 3,8K. The search volume from this tool of last December is not available just yet (but I don’t expect much difference here since Google Trends shows a steady search volume).
If the difference would have been 10-20%, I wouldn't be surprised at all, but this is huge.
**What could explain the differences? **
- If a lot of people were using AdBlockers (they do, but not nearly as massively (around 10%)).
- If we would have made mistakes in AdWords: budget, bidding, targeting etc. - This is not the case, got this confirmed by the manager who double-checked the data and settings. Also: since it’s a branded keyword it’s really cheap for us and easy to get high quality scores.
- If we would have made mistakes regarding indexing/crawling that would have caused an extreme loss in domain visibility in the SERP's: possibly caused by robots.txt, a noindex-tag, server problems etc. This was not the case and Google WebmasterTools says the average position was 1,0 during the complete month.
- "Something else" went wrong during that specific period of time with this specific domain. I don’t think so because I checked multiple months and multiple other domains of other clients. These gave me the same relative results (okay, some were a bit closer: 30 K paid impressions vs 62 K organic impressions for instance, still a big difference).
What other possibilities are left?
- The impressions from Google WMT and Google ADW are not the same, even though they are called the same and therefore suggest they should be (about) the same.
- AdWords just randomly fails to display and/or measure some branded ads (even though there is plenty of budget, bidding is fine and QS is 10/10).
Definitions of "impressions" for both tools according Google:
- AdWords definition of "impressions"
- WebmasterTools definition of "impressions"
Hope someone has some more suggestions or useful links! Thanks in advance!

Thanks Richard. Just to make sure I checked this one, but nothing changed: we were already showing 100.00% and got the same amount of impressions.

Under columns in Adwords, add in Impression Share to make sure you're actually showing 100% of the time.

Thanks for your respond. Basically, you are saying what I said:
- "The impressions from Google WMT and Google ADW are not the same, even though they are called the same and therefore suggest they should be (about) the same."
Even though I can't really tell there should/is any difference between the "same" metrics (by judging their description), I would have to assume they are in fact something (very) different (which is too bad!).
You are totally right in your solution: don't mind comparing those two sources and you'll be fine. Still, I wanted to know if I had overlooked something and if others may have noticed this before. Or maybe some could have drawn the wrong conclusions out of these different, yet very similar Google sources, for a long time. Those should be aware of this.

The answer for this is pretty simple, both tools are not the same nor do they look at the same data. While both tools are part of Google, they each interact with search differently and measure impressions in different ways (such as how image search is measured, map searches etc.) I do not try and draw direct comparison between the two tools, use them independently for their niche and you will be fine.

Adwords View Through Question
Hi Mozzers! I've got an Adwords Remarketing account performing well in terms of View Through Conversions but not regular 'old Conversions. We are getting about 10x more View Throughs than regular Conversions. Is this close to typical or in the expected range? Any suggestions about how to trade these around, working towards getting more regular conversions and less view through conversions?

AdWords Different Budgets on Different Days
I have a single campaign and this is what I want. Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri to have a budget of $270 per day
Paid Search Marketing | | UnderRugSwept
Wed to have a budget of $324 per day
Sat, Sun to have a budget of $432 per day Currently, the only way I can see to do this is to have three separate campaigns, which is very disagreeable. Please tell me there's something I'm overlooking. Thanks0 -
Put AdWords mobile ads in separate Campaign or AdGroup?
We want to ramp up traffic from the segment "Mobile with Full Browser" under enhanced campaigns in Google AdWords. Our Google rep said that it would be best to do this from within the same campaign. We're contemplating pulling the mobile traffic conversion effort out into its own campaign in order to more easily track performance. Background: We bid down traffic from "Mobile with Full Browser" to -100% because initially it performed poorly. We've improved our mobile experience and we want to try again. We're contemplating building mobile versions of our current ads using the AdWords functionality that does this, and watching how the mobile ads and the segment "Mobile with Full Browser" responds this time. Separate campaign or from within the same campaign. What would you do? Thanks,

Paid Search Visits Not Showing Up in Google Analytics
Hey all, Just took over SEM for my company, and noticed a bit of a problem with GA. Whereas Adwords has registered 141 clicks on paid campaigns that go to the site, GA has tracked only 5 vists in that time. Two things of note: The GA account was not linked to the Adwords account until today, and also, auto-tagging was not turned on. I understand these two things are important to having proper GA tracking, but I just want to make sure that there aren't any other things I should check right now to make sure I start to see tracked paid visits again. Is there anything else I should try? Cheers.

Why you should never use Google Adwords To Conduct Key Word Research
Buongiorno from 22 degrees C too damn humid Wetherby UK, The other day a client wanted to know how much a ppc campaign would cost with a specific bank of keywords. So off i went and loaded in the key words and set the ads thinking it was not live.... A week later i get a tap on the shoulder asking why weve been invoiced for £xxxx oh dio mio!! The damn campaign went to live. So ive got two questions: 1. Do Google adwords automatically go to Live once youve loaded up phrases and ads, i really thought it would have made it more obvious, A " Would you like your campaign to go live" prompt would have been appreciated. 2. As a safety measure is configuring a Google Alert in Analytics to ping when paid traffic is picked up not a bad idea just so ive got a warning sytem set up so to speak. Grazie tanto,

Can I pass keyword match type through the Adwords dest URL?
Hi guys, I'm currently using duplicates of the same keyword with different match types, and I'd like to pass the keyword match type through the query, the same way I can pass the keyword and creative. ie. http://my.site.com/?kw={keyword}&kwmt={matchtype}&aid={creative} As far as I can tell, Google allows you to pass the keyword, creative (ad id), network and a mobile flag. Microsoft allows you to pass the match type and and ad id, and I want to be able to do the same in my Adwords. Is this is possible, or is the only way to create different ad groups for each match type and pass a custom query? Cheers, Jez

Has anyone seen a recent study on % of clicks on Adwords vs Organic results?
HI, I am trying to find out what percentage of people click on organic search results on Google versus the percentage of people who click on advertisements. I have found many references online to studies that supposedly say 70-80% of clicks go to organic results and the rest go to ads, but I have never seen an actual study claiming this, let alone a recent one. Can anyone help? many thanks in advance, Annemieke
