Change domains and start over?

We have a fairly new client who has taken part in many questionable SEO technique over the past few years (mainly buying links and directory web pages). In an effort to fix this they hired three separate SEO’s – we are the fourth. Over the past 3 months we have spent lots of time following best practice techniques to clean up and improve their rankings (including link removal requests but not yet disavow), and after some initially positive results, things are looking down again.
Given Google’s apparent rolling algorithm updates and the mess we have found, we are wondering if the best option is to change domains and start over (downside is that they are in a highly competitive industry)? My other question pertains to a domain change and if we were to change from a plural to a singular, would that be enough for Google? (e.g from www.domains.com to www.domain.com). The idea is that we start the link building process again – but keep their brand intact.
Really appreciate any feedback.

Thanks for the lengthy response Jarno - your advise is much appreciated. I think we will give the slow disavow approach a go first, esp given the risks associated with changing domains. A steady approach seems to be safest at this point. Thanks again for your input. Regards, Prue

read your question with great interest. This kinda thing is what I face during some projects to. The first problem is that you are the fourth company working on their site. Every SEO has his/hers own methodology. In other words, things you might not consider to do, might be considered or done by someone else. Then again, the basics should all be the same.
The fact they've had some bad SEO done in the past can hurt a site. I would disavow those links, wait for maybe a month or 2 and check regularly if the links have been dropped. And then look at what the rankings will do. But don't focus on rankings alone. For instance, what is the bounce rate at this point? If the incoming traffic is unrelated to the subject through directory links or bad links you might see a high bounce ratio or low views per visitor. That is also I factor I would look at after disavowing some links. In stead of disavowing everything at once (which you could do) maybe it's wiser to disavow 25% first, then another 25%, another 25% and then the last 25% of links. And keep measuring the effect.
As for using singular or plural domain names is always tricky. It also kinda depends on the language your focussing on. In the Netherlands we have some terms that the plural is completely something else as the singular version. Sometimes it's just a "s" on the end other times the entire word becomes something different.
I would work a bit more on the old domain, making sure the on page SEO is completely up to date and correct, making sure you disavow some/all of the links, creating new unique content, acquire new links through your new content and keep a focus on the future. That way you might also get this old domain to work. Besides the age of the domain could also be a factor (several tools take this into account).
If you do switch to another domain, I agree with Ray. Make sure you also host it on another IP adres and make sure you don't get any reference from the old to the new domain because then the bad link juice might just flow through to the new domain.

I think what you need to consider is the quality and amount of traffic the current domain is receiving. If the rankings are shot and the site isn't receiving quality leads, then starting a new domain may be the best idea.
Changing from a singular to a plural should be enough - however, I would also want to change hosting providers to ensure no related IPs are associated with the domain as well.

70% organic traffic drop in October?! Algorithm change?
I oversee content for a client and this past month there was a 70% decrease in traffic. We noticed the hit start on September 29th, and has never rebounded. Any suggestions what this could be (i..e latest Google algorithm update) and or tools I should use to look into it? Nothing is showing up as an alert on Moz analytics and need to address with my client asap.

Should you include keywords in your domain name to rank well on Google Places?
Is it okay to include keywords in your domain name (as well as business name) to rank well on Google Places? In my opinion, this is very spammy and the sites using this technique will be slapped by Google sooner or later.

Do I need to undo a 301 redirect to dissavow links from the source domain?
A client came to me after being hit by Penguin and had already performed a 301 redirect from site A to Site B. Site B was subsequently hit by the penalty a number of weeks later and we are planing on performing link removal for Site A. Only the webmaster tools account for Site B exists, none is still available for site A. I assume that I cannot dissavow links to site A from Site B's webmaster tool account (even though website A's links show up in the GWT account). So do I need to undo the 301 and then create a new GWT account for site A in order to disavow the links pointing to site A, or can I submit from Site B's GWT account since they are 301'd to site B? How cloudflare might affect "rank juice" on numerous domains due to limited IP range?
We have implemented quite a few large websites onto cloudflare and have been very happy with our results. Since this has been successful so far, we have been considering putting some other companies on CL as well, but have some concerns due to the structure of their business and related websites. The companies run multiple networks of technology, review, news, and informational websites. All have good content (Almost all unique to each website) and rankings currently, but if implemented to cloudflare, would be sharing DNS and most likely IP's with eachother. Raising a concern of google reducing their link juice because it would be detected as if it was coming from the same server, such as people used to do for their blog farms. For example, they might be tasked to write an article on XYZ company's new product. A unique article would be generated for 5-10 websites, all with unique, informative, valid and relevant content to each domain; Including links, be it direct or contextual, to the XYZ product or website URL. To clarify, so there is no confusion...each article is relevant to its website... technology website- artciel about the engineering of xyz product

Are multiple domains spammy if they're similar but different
A client currently has a domain of johnsmith.com (not actual site name, of course). I’m considering splitting this site into multiple domains, which will include brand name plus keyword, such as: Johnsmithlandclearing.com Johnsmithdirtwork.com Johnsmithdemolition.com Johnsmithtimercompany.com Johnsmithhydroseeding.com johnsmithtreeservice.com Each business is unique enough and will cross-link to the other. My questions are: 1) will Google consider cross-linking spammy? 2) what happens to johnsmith.com? Should it redirect to new site with the largest market share, or should it become an umbrella for all? 3) Any pitfalls foreseen? I've done a fair amount of due diligence and feel these separate domains are legit, but am paranoid that Google will not see it that way, or may change direction in the future.

Is domain name or page title "safe" as anchor text?
I am aware of the dangers of excessively optimized anchor text I have seen some suggestions that as long as your anchor text is either the URL or the page title that this will be OK, no matter how many links come in with that anchor text. Does anyone have an opinion, or even any hard data on this? Thx Paul
