How do I optimize a website for SEO for a client that is using a subdirectory as a seperate website?
-
We launched a subdirectory site about two months ago for our client. What's happening is searches for the topic covered by the subdirectory are yielding search results for the old site and not the new site. We'd like to change this.
Are there best practices for the subdirectory site
Specifically we're looking for things we can do using sitemapping and Webmaster tools.
Are there other technical things we can do?
Thanks you.

Hi Dov,
You can definitely create separate sitemaps and GWT accounts for your two subdirectories if you prefer, but I don't think that it'll solve your problem. It sounds like the problem is, pages on the original subdirectory probably have a higher Page Authority and are outranking your new pages.
When there are two pages on the same site that are both relevant for a search term, Google tries to only display one. So, your best bet is to make sure that there aren't any pages on the old subdirectory that are relevant to the keywords that you want the new subdirectory to rank for. You have two options here:
- Remove pages from the old subdirectory that are ranking for terms that you want the new subdirectory to rank for. 301 redirect their URLs to the new subdirectory.
- For pages that you would like to stay on the site, change the wording so it doesn't compete with the new subdirectory.
I realize this is really general guidance, but it's tough to give more specific feedback unless I can see the site.
Hope this helps,
Kristina

The "new site" is meant to be a trendy informational source that's laid out in a blog format. Where as the "old site" is more so their marketing site.
The content in the "new site" is different from the "old one".
What we're looking for is more so how should we handle the subdirectory with regards to webmaster tools and sitemaps?
And if there are other technical things we should do.
And if we were to move or redirect the content on the "old site" to the "new site" would we need to do anything special?

Hi! Thanks for your question. I am curious, why did you launch the "new site" in a subdirectory of the "old site"? Is the content in the subdirectory ("new site") different from the content on the rest of the domain ("old site")? Finally, if you are able to share the domain, that would be very helpful.

Impact of Non SEO Subdomains
My company has several subdomains whose specific purpose is to act as a landing page/site for our paid search and/or email program. One of the things I've noticed on these subdomains is that they are not being excluded from the SEObots. Could the lack of proper SEO techniques on these subdomains impact our main www subdomain? What is the proper configuration we should use to make sure these sites are not considered for SEO?

AJAX and SEO
Hello team, Need to bounce a question off the group. We have a site that uses the .NET AJAX tool kit to toggle tabs on a page. Each tab has content and the content is drawn on page load. In other words, the content is not from an AJAX call, it is there from the start. The content sits in DIV tags which the javascript toggles - that's all. My customer hired an "SEO Expert" who is telling them that this content is invisible to search engines. I strongly disagree and we're trying to come to a conclusion. I understand that content rendered async via an AJAX call would not be spidered, however just using the AJAX (Javascript) to switch tabs will not affect the spiders finding the content in the markup. Any thoughts?

Does Quantcast interfered with SEO?
Quantcast (http://www.quantcast.com/), a stats program was removed from my clients website because the former SEO consultant said it interefered with his SEO efforts, claiming the google bots weren't reading it right. I have never heard of that before and my client now wants Quantcast back on their website. Has anyone heard of this problem with Quantcast?

New website
Hello, How bad is going to be if I change my Joomla website to Wordpress? I can check the 100 best pages and redirect them to the new url with 301 but my website has 424 pages. If is this needs time, how long does it take to be in the same position? Is Google review my new website quickly? What about if I make my services more specific and the main topic is going to be smaller in pages? (Mpre social services pages vs. less pages about the main webdesign topic) I should change my website to WP but I am afraid because now I am in the 2. 🙂 Thanks! Regards,

My clients website od 100% Flash...Will my SEO efforts be wasted?
My client has a Photography website and has an al carte design. It's in Flash and in 3 years only 3 pages of say 50 are indexed. Are my efforts being wasted?Should I redesign the site in an SEO friendly language? Or, if I build out a huge link building campaign it doesn't matter if I am in Flash or not? Thanks

What are SEO factors in re-doing a website?
Most of my work now involves converting older websites to CMS-based sites (in Wordpress) and I'm wondering about best practices here. If I create a "dev" or "sandbox" directory for my development work how do I keep the pages from being indexed while I am working on the new site? Can I "noindex" a directory? What do I do with the old html files when the new site goes live? I'm assuming I will do a 301 redirect from domain.com/index.html to the new domain.com/, and also on all of the inner pages that have equivalent pages in the new site. But there will be a lot of old files left that have no equal in the new site. Do I just delete these, or noindex nofollw them?
