To Genesis or not to Genesis that is the question
-
Hi everyone, i know this subject has been raised few times in the past, but i wanted to reach out to the community and find out what is your take on the advantages and disadvantage (if any) for using the Genesis Framework when building a new websites for Clients.
I know for fact that many developers are complaining that they find it harder to manage the Genesis Framework, which i do appreciate has a bit more of comparability issues when it comes to plugins and modifications, but i always looked at it as a positive rather then a negative.
My personal opinion is that Genesis framework is more of a stable Skeleton that is better read by Search Engine (from a technical SEO point view) and is harder for hackers to penetrate.
Would have love to hear the community experts opinion pros and cons.
Cheers.

I started using Genesis framework about 10 weeks ago, and I couldn't be happier with the change. I really recommend it

Welle the idea of police profiling and Google bot just seeing a high quality connection, fast time to first bite, no malware on the residents./Website it will not form opinions about the hosting and the reason I think is because so many great hosting companies are used bad things all the time. When you look at the malware history of any network that the residence site is being frisked by Google bot in I believe that Google does not make preconceptions of we should rule the next one a little bit lower because a network that shows up with the equivalent of crack all the time but it will not persecute the innocent until it scans them guilty. I am all about putting your site on the best hosting and look at AWS they host some of the biggest companies in the world they also host a lot of spam.
IP addresses that are not misused more targeted by malware/humans are the same until they get in trouble.
If you are running on a very slow network and using few resources because the server is oversaturated and people are using the same IP address for their host name as they are their email I think that's a recipe for disaster and that's blue host, Go Daddy all that junk.
honestly I would never host with those companies but that does not mean Google actually presumes guilt. It is something they definitely take into consideration when crawling that site I do not believe that they condemn people for using a host that is likely to be doing bad things until it does.
All this means is you still have to make sure your site is on a high-quality network, hosting provider, DNS provider, mail provider in order to have a good website experience in my opinion.
Sincerely,
Thomas

Hi Tom, thanks for that.
Not sure where i read (or heard) a great metaphor exactly about that. Specifically speaking of hosting and treating your hosting company and server as the "Neighbourhood" of which your website resides in.
I'm confident that Google is cleaver in assessing your "Neighbourhood". Now, lets say that Google is the Police in our case, when the police is called out to visit a bad neighbourhood its already have pre-conceptions when it arrives (assuming high crime rate etc.) and it will be much harder for a resident in the "bad neighbourhood" to argue he is innocent (im not taking sides, but simply say it as it is).
So, based on the above analogy if you host your website in a bad neighbourhood rather than a gated high end community (i.e. Dedicated server on a reputable host) there is a good chance you will also be treated more preferably by the "police".
Well, that's my take anyhow, and i strongly believe it has an impact (as small as it might be).

Hey Dan, I happen to know that it is schema which is built into Genesis 2.0 and above that gives it more directionwhen Google crawls it compared to many competitors. The second part about shared hosting and dedicated iscorrect if the servers are performing very well. If you have a dedicated server that is not set up properly it can actually be worse than the best I mean the most optimized shared environment. Google glands not make deals with companies or products makes a decision based on what it learns using the summary of the parts and projects wrapped in your website like a Carmel egg. And speaking of Carmel eggs both are good for breakfast if you're really tired the night before and get some go and a 12 pack of Carmeleggs 19 pack of redBulls hit all your command buttons as the same time try to hold your hand still numb so you don't shake when typing "wazzup:Carmeleggz" and you will have a healthy breakfast ready in no time it's a little trick from a guy named Al Gore.
then get a new Twitter war with the head of Ecuador he will bite you hard though.

Well pointed Thomas. This is a thing of the past with Genesis if you ensure to use Yoast. Generally speak Yoast and Genesis works extremely well together.
I will also note, although i cant prove it, that when Google crawl the code and notice Genesis frame work it is identifiable and i think adds value (same as noticing if a site is on a dedicated server or on a shared environment) which i believe give you (or deduct) brownie points for your ranking.
Dan.

you bring up a good point Kevin if you use the Genesis framework SEO option then you will either see an outdated marketing or something that does the wrong thing with their canonical's.
That said this is easily fixed by downloading WordPress SEO at Yoast.com
all the best,

I used Genesis a good few years back on wordpress i had some good results and it worked well for me. It was a while back now.
Advantages
It worked well at the time words ranked relatively easy.
You get a really good professional look.
there was a great forum for getting answers and community following
It has stood the test of time so it can't be all that bad.
Disadvantages
It looked good but a wordpress feel witch i didn't like.
I had major problems canonical url's i tried everything at the time and was one of the main reasons i switched to Drupal.
Development is a pain and at the time the learning curb was quite big to do simple changes.

Thanks Thomas,
This was very helpful. I would love to see a few more comments making a solid case for Genesis framework over the traditional way of themes.

Hi Dan,
Their are some very specific small things that are different about Genesis obviously but once you master those I do not see a downside whatsoever compared to just WordPress.
I use Genesis on every WordPress build including Woo commerce
I say definitely use Genesis framework get to know it very well check out sites like
Some of many excellent developers that prefer Genesis.
Genesis is open source framework you can make your own plug-ins bended it to make your own framework based off of it it's easy not bloated great for just about everything I can think of.
The groundwork for Genesis 2.0 HTML5 was built here by my friend Greg Yoast credits him for it this was not something that would have affected software license. It's 100% open source

I am not a big WP user but my experience with Oscommerce may help here. When you take an open source item and lay on it any set of modifications that are not open source you run the risk of become dependent on the modification developers to help with issues.
Perhaps you should also evaluate Word Press forums to see what others are asking and saying. I know on Oscommerce as soon as you mention a non-open source ad-on or modification your thread can be deleted and people clam up or tell you to go ask the developer.
As a business if you are building sites with another parties software just make sure your clients know about it, and the differences from using a vanilla installation vs one with the third party framework. I don't think there is anything wrong with using third party programs, as long as you have time to become familiar with the differences and are able to relay help to your clients if need be.
I am always leery of getting stuck relying on other business for help when a serious problem arises. This is why I love open source software and their communities.
Good luck with whatever you choose!

Thinking about redesigning site to reduce bounce rate - have a couple of questions
BACKGROUND Im looking at redesigning the website for a creative consultancy to improve the user experience. The website is mainly an image portfolio along with “press”, “our services”, “about us”, “contact” pages. I originally designed the website a few years ago and when we did, we wanted to make the image portfolio the most important feature. So we made it a full screen JS image slider with lazy loading of images, so that there are about 40 full screen images on the homepage that rotate. From a users point of view i still feel this is the best system as it very quickly allows them to browse the portfolio, which we looking for a creative consultancy is their UPS (unique selling point). The site has a very strong backlink profile compared to its competitors in the SERPS it has about 20-25% increase in PA and DA. But our site has been slipping down the rankings in recent years / months. From spot 1-2 to about spot 5-7. MY HYPOTHESIS I think that the reason the site may be dropping back in the SERP is that although its a very usable site, all its portfolio information is “too easy to find / view” and results in a user coming to our site, seeing everything they need to see, then bouncing back to the SERP. Our site has a bounce rate of 40-60%. Where as on competitors sites, their “portfolio” is a separate page off the homepage, so a users has to click through to a separate page, and even if they don't like the design content of the portfolio it doesn't get logged as a bounce. MY QUESTION Does bounce rate affect SERP ranking ? Could the sites SERP performance be improved by redesigning the site to put the portfolio on a separate page so a user would have to click through to it, if that would get the bounce rate down, would the site see a benefit even if people still clicked back to the SERP results eventually after seeing our portfolio, even though it wasn't a true 1 page bounce ? Dose time on site affect SERP ranking ? Is there a way i can see a competitor's bounce rate ? Would welcome any other thoughts inputs on this matter.

Pageless/Single Page Design and Migration Questions
Hello, We are starting a content audit and migration to a new CMS. We would like to take content and present more on a pageless/Single Page type design instead of having visitors drill down so many levels to find the content. What should we be aware of from an SEO perspective. Here is Example of current pages and structure: http://www.saintpetershcs.com/GraduateMedicalEducation/PediatricResidency/

Question Concerning HTML5/CSS Templates & Google Mobility Issues
Hi all, Looking for some kind of solution for a responsive update for a site and I am wondering if there are any templates (not Wordpress) that are both great SEO wise and would also pass muster with the impending Google update for responsiveness? I was looking at things like Canvas and Porto ( http://themeforest.net/popular_item/by_category?category=site-templates ) but can't find any discussion on whether or not these things have been addressed with any of these templates. If any of you have suggestions or other places to look for something that could possibly fit the bill (even if temporarily) I would be very appreciative. Thank you so much in advance!

Question Mark In URL??
So I am looking at a site for a client, and I think I already have my answer, but wanted to check with you guys. First off the site is in FLASH and HTML. I told the client to dump the flash site, but she isn't willing right now. So the URLS are generated like this. Flash: http://www.mysite.com/#/page/7ca2/wedding-pricing/ HTML: http://www.mysite.com/?/page/7ca2/wedding-pricing/ checking the site in Google with a site:mysite, none of the interior pages are indexed at all. So that is telling me that Google is pretty much ignoring everything past the # or ?. Is that correct? My recommendation is to dump the flash site and redo the URLS in a SEo friendly format.

PHP Framework Question! Zend, CakePHP, Symfony, CodeIgniter. Finally I get to ask something.
Hey ya'll! We are looking to re-build our backoffice website. It's a dynamically generated site that pulls information from a DB. The DB is populated by the quote form. The DB contains the customers' info, shipping, email templates, and everything to process orders. The backoffice website is custom made in JAVA, but the owner is not happy with the programmer. I told the owner we may want to go to a PHP Framework. My question is which PHP framework would you recommend and why? Zend CakePHP Symfony CodeIgniter

Another Panda question
Hi all, Yes, it's another Panda question.... Would Panda effect an entire site or just specific pages. Many people have said that it penalizes entire sites, however, some of the questions that Google is said to have asked Panda testers seem to be page specific. What's the general consensus?? Thanks
