Linking from a corporate site to a brand site.
-
Is there an SEO impact to a large corporation linking from a corporate and/or a divisional site to a specific brand site with it's own top level domain? We would like to keep the traffic coming, but not if it will be seen as a black hat tactic. My guess is that Google will be smart enough to see that the corporation owns the brand and at least not penalize us, but I am wondering if anyone else has this experience? Google Analytics is calling it self-referral.

Thanks so much Dirk and Anthony!

No, I don't think you're in any danger here. None at all. These links make complete sense, and you're allowed to link to whoever you want. You're not building a spammy link web, or anything close to that. All that said, just a few weeks ago Rand, in the Whiteboard Friday "Subdomains vs. Subfolders, Rel Canonical vs. 301, and How to Structure Links for SEO", addressed the question "If I have multiple websites all linking back to my main site, does that help or hurt my SEO?"
The take-home is that it probably makes the most sense for the corporate site to build brand pages at sub-directories on the main corporate site, rather than have a bunch of smaller brand sites to promote their products/services.
Hope this helps!

I don't think this would be considered a black hat technique, as most corporations with multiple brands are doing this. Just don't try to over optimise the anchor texts and you'll be just fine.
However, I am a bit puzzled by your remark on self referral. If it's a completely different brand, and you want to measure the traffic separately from your corporate brand, you should use a different Analytics property for that site.
If you want to measure the traffic as if both the corporate & the brand site would be one site, one property is ok, but than you have to adapt your analytics tracking code for cross-domaintracking. If you are using universal analytics - you can find here (https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/1034342?hl=en) how you can do that.
rgds,
Dirk

301 old site to new site?
I have client with an old site - www.bestfamilylawattorney.com - which had a lot of spammy links (and bad rankings). Instead of fixing those issues, we started a new URL - www.berenjifamilylaw.com - with new content and redesign. Should I do a 301 redirect from old to new domain? If the old site was being penalized, would a 301 transfer that penalty? I just want to make sure I don't end up hurting the new site after doing all the work to start fresh. Thanks.

Does Disavowing Links Negate Anchor Text, or Just Negates Link Juice
I'm not so sure that disavowing links also discounts the anchor texts from those links. Because nofollow links absolutely still pass anchor text values. And disavowing links is supposed to be akin to nofollowing the links. I wonder because there's a potential client I'm working on an RFP for and they have tons of spammy directory links all using keyword rich anchor texts and they lost 98% of their traffic in Pengiun 1.0 and haven't recovered. I want to know what I'm getting into. And if I just disavow those links, I'm thinking that it won't help the anchor text ratio issues. Can anyone confirm?

Why is my m-dot site outranking my main site in SERPs?
My client has a WP site and a Duda mobile site that we inherited. For some reason their m-dot site is ranking on P1 of Google for their top KWs instead of the main site which is much more robust. The main site might rank beyond page 5 when the generic home page for their m-dot site appears on P1. Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening?

Google Manual Penalty - Unnatural Links FROM My Site - Where?
Hi Mozzers, I've just received a manual penalty for one of my websites. The penalty is for 'unnatural links from my site which I find disturbing because I can't see that anything really wrong with it. The website is www.lighting-tips.co.uk - its a pretty new blog (only 6-7 posts) and whilst I've allowed guest posting I'm being very careful that the content is relevant and good quality. I'm only allowing 1 - 2 links and very few with proper anchor text so I'm wondering what has been done so wrong that I'm getting this manual penalty? Am I missing something here? Thanks in advance. Would it be ok if my ccTLD (.au) has links pointing to my .com (main) site?
The main pages of my .au site are all in .au, but once you go to the inner pages, the users will be directed to my .com site. The .com will act as the content for the top pages of the .au. Would that be ok?
