Pages vs Posts
-
What are your thoughts on pages vs posts? I am setting up a new blog for a client but not sure how to structure the content. I may just do posts or a whole bunch of page listed down the sidebar.
It seems like my pages always rank better than my posts. Has anyone else noticed this? Could it be because of the dates tied posts?

Thanks for the info! I will check out the guide.

Read Yoast's "Definitive Guide to SEO" where he specifically says "pages over posts." I think you said it yourself earlier that posts tend to roll off in the SERPs over time.
And users don't know the difference. Also, you won't have to deal with the hassle of blocking the archive and category pages.

yup that make sense....
I have never run into a situation where the comments where starting to dilute the main keywords. I see how it might happen thought
With this client I am really trying to focus on long-tail traffic. In his niche the search volume is very low for any particular keyword. If my focus is going to be long-tail do you think there is a benefit of pages over posts? Would pages rank stronger for random long-tail variation than posts? Or will a few hundred blog posts pull in the long-tails just the same?
Thanks again for the help!

Posts are known to be more time-sensitive by the search engines, so will not rank as well as pages.

If you're going to allow comments, how will that affect your keywords?
Your most important pages should be pages.

It shouldn't but remember that blog posts are date sensitive, whereas pages aren't.
Do check out the competition and see what they do - always a good indicator

hmmm....
It really doesnt seem like it should matter. pages, posts, whatever... I might test it out to see.
Thanks for the ideas!

It all depends on your readers really. There are times (and industries) when this wouldn't be the way to go.
As for pages pulling in more traffic, it is impossible to say why without looking at so many different factors. However, if your client is in the same industry as you and you have had success with this, then it sounds like you should give it a go.

Yeah I would like to use posts because it seems like the right way to do it... Also it is common practice. But my sites with all pages seems to pull in way more traffic. I usually just make them static pages, allow comments, and add share buttons. I dont think they look any different to the reader.
I want to use the blog for news and discussion but I would like it to pull in lots of long-tail traffic as well. When I look through a lot of the SERPs I do not see blog post rankings... It seems to be static pages. Sub-pages but not many dated blog posts.
If blog posts are intended for more "dated content" such as news, etc. then would Google value them for awhile then roll them off for newer content?
Where Pages are intended for more Evergreen content that should continue to stay relevant?
-
Or you could do what most do, and that is to create a site with static pages and have a blog attached for news & discussions.
-
I haven't come across any research that suggests any difference between post and pages.I think it boils that to the type of content you will be publishing and what you intend to achieve. Since it's solely a blog that you are creating, i will suggest you stick with posts. That allows for visitors to comment etc. If that is not important then you can stick to pages.
-
Is this a site that requires a lot of fresh content or is there an element of static (evergreen) as well?
A lot depends on the site and target audience really. As for the pages vs posts, I see such a huge variation, I couldn't say that one is better than the other as there are so many factors to take into account.
Look at the competition - see what those in the top spots are doing and mimc their strategy.

Ranking more than one page.
Our travel website has a number of different places listed. The layout of each place is the same as the next. On place ranks on page 1 for its keywords where as others do not. Is there a tool of some description that may identify why this is.

Area pages
As area pages are seen as trying to game google (see link below) is their a 'better way' to target multipe areas (100 odd)? https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/2721311?hl=en Cheers

Page Speed
Google recommends a page load speed of 1.4 seconds, is it recommended to have that page speed for every page on the site, or just the landing pages. Is there a tool that will check the load speed of every page on a site and report the slow pages? The free online tools only check one page at a time.

Redirecting https pages
If I add 301 redirects from the https versions of the root domain to the http:www.website.com (canonical version), will this prevent users from being able to access the https version? I believe the https version is only accessed once users log into the site. Thank you!

How is this page ranking?
Hi. A client of mine is being outranked by a competitor whose landing page does not include the keyword within their page content AT ALL. Nor does their URL. Nor do any image alts. And their page title features the keyword in the middle of it, not at the start. Their link profile is not great with directories and the like. They are not socially active.. I am confused! I thought content on a page absolutely had to include the keyword to get ranked for it. Here's the page: www.springsoft.ie, keyword is "water softeners" Any thoughts I would appreciate. Many thanks.Christoffa

On-page keyword usage
SEOMOZ gave me all zeros for keyword usage. Why? The site is www.grass2greens.com and the keywords are "Asheville Landscaping Edible." The site includes these words in the title page and throughout the body text. I am not really sure, but maybe one cause for these low keyword usage ratings might be redirects or some meta tag issues, but I am really not sure. Any ideas?

Homepage vs. Product page competition
I think my homepage and basic product listing page may be competing.. We have a very old domain with lots of links w/ generic anchor text ( click here, etc. ) That page is http://mybrand.com which Google ranks for our "widgets" search term. We have a page http://ourbrand.com/widgets that lists the 5 or 6 basic widgets we sell. This page is indexed also, but doesn't have nearly as many links since it is new compared to the age of the domain. After reading this.. http://www.seomoz.org/blog/how-to-solve-keyword-cannibalization I I'm not really sure I can remove all "widgets" links from our homepage, since that's a core part of our site's menu / hierarchy. So maybe my best effort would be to reorganize the page so that the homepage focuses on Our Brand Name Widgets .. and let the product page focus on the widgets keyword. Is having those two pages serve to represent those two separate but similar keywords feasible? Thoughts?

E-Commerce product pages that have multiple skus with unique pages.
Hey Guys, With the recent farm/panda update from google i'm at a cross roads as to how I should optimize product pages for a project i'm working on for a client. My client sells tires and one particular tire brand can have up to 15 models and each model can have up to 30 sizes. IE: 'Michelin Pilot Sport Cup' comes in 15 different sizes. Each size will have it's unique product page and description bringing me to my question. Should I use the same description on every size? I do plan on writting unique content for each tire model however i'm not sure if I should do it for every size. After all the tire model description is the same for every size, each size doesn't carry any unique characteristics that I can describe. Thanks in advance!
