Two websites vs. one for SEO
-
I recently met with a new potential client who currently has two websites for his business - one that is for the business as a whole and another that is specific to one of his particular services (his main service and what the overall business is known for).
My first question was "why do you have two websites?" His response was that he has had a really hard time ranking well organically for his main service. He worked with an SEO company for two years and never was able to establish a solid organic presence for searches related to his main service - so he went ahead and had a site built to focus specifically on that service with the hope that it would help him rank organically for searches related to that service. The new site was built very recently (Dec. 2014) and it hasn't had a lot of optimization work put into it. The original site has a much higher Domain Authority, more incoming links, etc.
My typical preference has always been to use one website and drive all traffic to that site, while building out specific content for any products/services on individual pages of the site. For some reason I'm torn as to what to do with this particular situation since his main concern is ranking for his core service, which hasn't happened with the original site. I'm concerned, though, that optimizing and managing two websites will be less effective than driving all of the traffic to one site, and that it could actually be detrimental overall.
What are your thoughts? Suggestions? Feel free to let me know if you need any more details.

There's another trap that I've seen people fall into, and that is not looking at the pages you're competing with in the search results.
If you look at the SERPS for your target term, are their any insights there?
- How competitive is it? Are there lots of ads? Are the pages that are ranking optimised/targeted to the search term?
- Do the competitors have a reputation/brand associated with this particular search term?
- Based on the pages being returned, can you establish the searchers intent? (Is this a navigational/transactional/informational query? What is the searchers level of awareness of this product/service?
- You mention local - for this term, is there a local intent? How localised as the search results for this term?
- What else apart from the authority of the page is helping the top ranking do so well for this keyword?
- What about related searches? Are their opportunities to target this term more broadly by building content around the questions subtopics related to this term?

Hi Doug,
Thanks for the feedback. Their reasoning for the new site was that the original site was never able to rank well for their main target search term (and similar variations), so they assumed that creating a site that is completely specific to that search term/service would help with ranking for that search term. I actually agree with that thinking, but there is a definite trade-off. It means time has to be taken away from optimization and up-keep of the original site to build up this brand new website, and I could also see a lot of issues with citations and local search discrepancies between the two sites as well.
I'm waiting on access to analytics and webmaster tools data for both sites, but will definitely use that information before making a final decision on which route to take. Data aside, there are A TON of improvements that can be made to the original site that will make a positive difference.
It's good to hear that your thinking is along the same lines as mine. Overall I'm leaning towards proposing that we stick with the original site and put our efforts towards building that up.

Hi Garrett,
I agree with you that using one authoritative domain is generally preferable than although there are valid reasons to create campaign specific micro-sites.
What makes the them think that a new site, with our any establish authority is going to perform better than the current site?
I think that as the new site has already been built the best thing to do is to collect some data and see how well it is currently performing (even if it's not as optimised as it could be). Is it out-performing your authoritative site? Can you get access to analytics/webmaster tools data for the two domains?
Can you establish why the authoritative site struggled to get any visibility for the main service? What are the strengths/weaknesses of their site compared to their competitors?
Sometimes, the pursuit of a "glory keyword" is a fools errand. Just because you can't rank for the high commercial intent keyword doesn't mean you can create content targeted at potential customers earlier in their awareness.
Can you provide resource content, or blog posts that enable your client to get in front of the conversation and build a relationship before people are ready to make a commitment and click that "contact-us or buy now" button?
Without knowing the sites concerned it's difficult to provide any specific insights.

One domain or two for one company with two lines of business?
Let's say you are building a new company that is involved in two lines of business. Let's for example say one line of business is handling logistics for large conventions where the customer(s) are large corporation and the other line is for wedding planning. Let's say that for certain reasons the owner wants to operate under one brand name, say "PROEVENT" So they will market themselves as PROEVENT Convention Logistics and PROEVENT Wedding Planners. From an SEO perspective, if you have one side of the business doing B-to-B corporate business and the other doing B-to-C do you create two different websites on different domains (proeventconventions.com and proeventweddings.com) with unique design and content, or, do you just use provent.com in order to build better domain authority and on your marketing you use conventions.provent.com that takes you to the convention section of the website and weddings.provent.com takes you to the weddings section?

For a mobile website, is it better to use a 301 vs. a 302 redirect?
We are vetting a vendor for our mobile website and they are recommending using a 302 redirect with rel=canonical vs. a 301 redirect due to 301 caching issues. All the research I've done shows that a 301 is by far the better way to go do to proper indexing, which in turn will enhance our page authority. Thoughts on why a 302 would be a better fit than a 301 on our mobile site?

Images and SEO
Hi, I would like some opinions on the topic of using images for SEO. I have come across a few sites that I see have very few backlinks, but have decent pagerank and seem to rank well for certain keywords. One such site I looked at had very little content other than tons of images (It was a joke blog that focussed on funny images, funny pics etc) and now I am starting to question whether hotlinking images assists in SEO? are there any benefits to having someone using one of your images (hosted on your site) ? I do recall reading somewhere that someone hotlinking an image is akin to a link. Any truth in this?

Victim of negative SEO
Hello, I'm one of those people that got the "unnatural links" message from google. Since i run my site from the very first day and always was a one man business i know all the ins and outs of the website.

Basicly i have never ever used a seo company to submit my site anywhere.
Never ever i used any shady tactic to get better ranks.
The only thing i did was trading traffic/links with real active websites, being daily updated, high traffic, etc etc. So. After i got notified in webmaster tools i started digging into a list (provided by webmaster tools) to find out why i got this message (meanwhile i lost 75% of my se traffic in past 3 months) After searching for hours i found out that in the past 2 / 3 months my site has been spammed on about 150 forums (completely dead forums with nothing but spam on it) There was no logic at all since my site got linked with the most ridiculous and unlogical word phrases.
My site is adult related and all spam links contained word phrases like "bangladesh mobile" or "rock girl" or "animal abuse" or "ringtones" etc etc. if i ever would be so stupid to start spamming my 7 year old strong business i would at least use titles that would make sence. anyway.
I can't do nothing about these forums, i don't own them, i can't erase them and if there are any owners, they simply don't respond.
I made a list of all the forums and send it to google but the only response they come up with is "there are still unnatural links". I hardly believe they did anything with that list i send them. I don't know what else i can do and was hoping that somebody could advice me on what to do here besides sending google messages on a daily base. cheers0 -
How to place two NADs on site (One website, 2 locations)
Hello, For our site: nlpca(dot)com we have 2 locations. One location is based out of a hotel in California, and one location is where we have our offices in Utah. Our site is about both locations, emphisizing California. Do we need to create a Utah page and put the Utah NAD on that page with separate address and phone number? What do we use as an address since we only have a hotel room in California now? What do we need to do to rank for both in the natural and also Places listings? Right now we're #1 for NLP California and #4 for NLP Utah Thanks!

New Website.. From where to start with a SEO Plan ?
Hi.. We have got two SEO and link builders working here in the office, putting in efforts is not a problem. And we have been doing SEO for our websites since a long time and they all rank well. Since, I have signed up for SEOMOZ, which is the one stop with all the heavy duty SEO guys, so we would like to get some suggestions from the experts. Ok here is the question. We have launched a new website this week and we have got a new SEO client, whose website is 6 months old. 1. What should be a proper SEO plan for a new website ? Got any Plan PDF or Buleprint, which you can send me ? 2. For the client website , he is ranking on 4-7th pages for his 4 keywords. Whats should be the correct way or plan to start doing SEO for them and get them to the first page ? 3. I feel like, doing competitive analysis is lacking with us and we are not good at evaluating that step. Whats the bet way to do competitive analysis ? 4. We are looking to build more and more links to the website . Whats the best way to make links ? Got any SEOMoz Blog post link, which explain this better or any forum thread which has got the tricks for this ?
