Anchor Text and over optimization
-
Hello everyone,
I would like to have your expert (hopefully) opinion on one thing: I am working on a specifi page of a pretty big site, and I noticed one thing in particular. This page is linked to from a lots of internal pages (which is ok) but the anchor text used is in most cases the exact keyword they would like to rank for. I know this is not generally a good thing, but I guess they have so many links with that particular anchor because of the breadcrumbs, and this actually makes sense. Now, if this is the case, how could we work this out (if this is an issue)? Or probably this is not an issue since those links don’t carry a lot of SEO weight…don’t know.
Thanks for your opinion on this

Hi Brendan!
The post you linked is really interesting! Thanks! There are so much info out there that it’s quite easy to miss the good stuff
Yep, and for the on-page grader I already checked that one: A
Thank you very much for your kind help

Hi Parodi,
Including your targeted keywords in your URL is definitely recommended. As a general rule, people should be able to read the URL and understand what the page is about before clicking. Pete Meyers wrote a great post on this a few years back but all of the information in it is still very much valid today.
One really important thing to note - if you do change your URLs to include your targeted keywords (and there's no real reason you shouldn't), remember to redirect the old versions properly using 301 redirects.
One final thing you might want to try if you haven't already is Moz's On-Page Grader Tool which will look at important on-page ranking factors for your targeted search term and give you a list of things you can do to improve the relevancy of the page.

HI guys, thank you very much for your kind help. Yes the anchor is perfectly natural, and it makes sense that a link from the footer is not seen as an over optimization, otherwise all big sites should have this issue However, I already did an analysis of the competitors considering A LOT of things and our site, at least on paper, should rank higher (and I took into consideration not just what was on the moz report but html errors, page speed, word count and so on…pretty through). There are things that can be done to improve the page optimization, but what is interesting, is that all the pages that are outranking us have some sort of keyword variation in the URL. I thought the keyword in the URL was not a big deal, but if that’s the case, well, it kind of gets confusing with everyone saying that keywords in the URL are not important. Do you have any experience on this? Not sure if I can share the URL but in case I can, I will Thank you so very much!

Howdy,
This all really depends on what the anchor text being used is and how natural it sounds. For example, if it's a service such as car insurance that your site offers, using 'car insurance' as the anchor text would make complete sense as this is how the service is referred to. However, if it's something more long tail than this - car insurance California, for example, it would look unnatural and would not be recommended.
Are you able to share the URL for the page you're working on so we can take a closer look? Feel free to send me a PM if you'd prefer.
Another thing you could do is to look at your competitors in the SERPs for your targeted term(s) and see what they're doing. Open Site Explorer's Anchor Text tool is a great way to look at internal links pointing to a particular page so you can get a really good idea of what others are doing.

Well, ideal case is variety of anchors, but you are speaking about internal links so i dont think it´s a big problem.
Problematic would be if those links with same achors would be external links

Image Size in Alt Text
Hi, On our ecommerce site, when we load an image for an item, it automatically loads different sizes for that image. (i.e. High Res, Large, Small, Thumbnail, etc). We have an option to add the size to the alt text of the image (in addition to the description of the picture... so for example "Blue casual shirt High Res"... is this necessary? One of our clients requested this and I am not sure I see the point of having the image size in the alt text unless it helps the visually impaired in some way?

Optimizing blog domain for maximum rank/traffic potential
Hello wonderful Moz community! I need some advice. Here is the situation: I work in a small division within a much larger company. We each have our own domain, i.e. www.parent.com and www.child.com. We (the child) have a domain authority of 57, while our parent has a domain authority of 86. Our blog lives on blogs.parent.com/child. My understanding is that www.brand.com/blogs is better for SEO than blogs.brand.com (we had no control of directory structure decisions at the parent level). Given all that, in terms of maximizing traffic to our domain, would we be better off moving our blog to www.child.com/blogs? Here are a couple of potential pros/cons bouncing around in my newbie brain: a) By moving the blog to our domain, our whole site could benefit from having any external links our blog posts earn point back to our domain vs. our parent's domain. b) On the other hand, leaving the blog on our parent's domain and then linking to our content from posts over there might give our content a boost. (Of course, that theory is shot down if Google recognizes our parent/child relationship and doesn't reward our site with the benefit of linkbacks coming from our parent domain.) What say you? Are there other angles to this I’m not even considering? If you think the right decision is to move the blog over to our site, any suggestions on how not to screw that up? (301’s, etc.) Thanks in advance for your thoughts! -John

Is alt text inside an img tag inside an h1 the same weight as text directly inside the h1?
Right now I use a background image and CSS to tie the h1 tag to my logo on each page. However, I am concerned that may not be best practice. Plus, I am interested in using schema markup on my logo. So, my question is, if I use an image with alt text inside my h1 tag, will the alt text carry as much weight as a text-based h1?

Trying to Optimize my site for one keyword any advice please
Hi, we are trying to optimize our site www.in2town.co.uk for the keyword of lifestyle magazine. We are having trouble with this. We were last year number one in google for the keyword and then the end of last year we went to position four and now we are on the bottom of the second page and we are not sure what is happening. here is the text view of the site http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:5U281SBmDlUJ:www.in2town.co.uk/&hl=en&client=firefox-a&gl=uk&strip=1 I am just wondering if we need to do a better description of the lifestyle magazine at the top as i know it says you should have your keyword within the first 100 words Any help on trying to solve this problem and get the page back where it belongs will be great. I know we have a lot of text on the page so google maybe finding it hard to find out what keywords are what but the only keyword we are interested in this page is lifestyle magazine, in the near future we would be looking at including lifestyle news many thanks

My web site, www.nhfinehomes.com, is running on IIS7 and I did read a great post on SEOMoz.org regarding how to optimize IIS for SEO in particular, redirecting URL's to lowercase properly. However, I lack the technical skills to do this and am looking for someone who has done this before that can consult on this. Can anyone help or recommend a consultant with actual, IIS SEO experience?

With regard to tabbed content or accordions for text... would it be better to break these out into individual pages for SEO?
We often get asked by clients if they have a lot of content about a particular subject: would it be better to break that information out into smaller chunks as separate pages, OR would it be good to build a tabbed content container or accordion feature on one single page? Does anyone have any opinion on this in regards to SEO?

Optimizing Dynamic landing pages in specific Geo-Locations
I have a website that has a a dynamic URl for individual dealer landing pages - this works based on the geo-location tool on the site. When a user comes it it will recognize their location based on IP address then present the appropriate content based on zip code logic. Example URL: http://www.3mwater.com/?___store=dealer Example URL: http://www.3mwater.com/dealer/ Question: How can I best optimize each individual page for each individual dealer when the URL stays static regardless of dealer? Thank you!
