How to Set Up Canonical Tags to Eliminate Duplicate Content Error
-
Google Webmaster Tools under HTML improvements is showing duplicate meta descriptions for 2 similar pages. The 2 pages are for building address. The URL has several pages because there are multiple property listings for this building. The URLs in question are:
www.metro-manhattan.com/601-west-26th-street-starrett-lehigh-building-contains-executive-office-space-manhattan/page/3
How do I correct this error using canonical tags? Do I enter the URL of the 1<sup>st</sup> page under “Canonical URL” under “Advanced” to show Google that these pages are one and the same? If so, do I enter the entire URL into this field (www.metro-manhattan.com /601-west-26th-street-starrett-lehigh-building-contains-executive-office-space-manhattan) or an abbreviated version (/601-west-26th-street-starrett-lehigh-building-contains-executive-office-space-manhattan)?
Please see attached images.
Thanks!!
Alan

Hi Alan,
To go down another route, you could instead set up URL parameters in WMT itself, that way you could set the URL that contains /page/ as the canonical without having to implement anything on the Wordpress side.
Kind Regards
Jimmy

Hi Alan,
I'm really not a Wordpress expert, so I can't comment much on implementing a rel="canonical" tag using their interface. There's some good general information on canonical here, though: http://moz.com/learn/seo/canonicalization
If you're set on solving this with a canonical, I imagine you'd point www.nyc-officespace-leader.com/601-west-26th-street-starrett-lehigh-building-contains-executive-office-space-manhattan/page/3 to www.nyc-officespace-leader.com/601-west-26th-street-starrett-lehigh-building-contains-executive-office-space-manhattan. I'd include the full URL.
Out of curiosity, what purpose does having both pages actually serve? The content is pretty similar on both.

Hi Matt:
The error is for "Pages with duplicate title tags".
Since these two pages are so similar I believe it has something to do with a canonicalization error.
THANKS!!!! Alan

Hi there!
Just for a bit of clarification, is Webmaster Tools alerting you to duplicate title tags, duplicate meta descriptions, both, or duplicate page content overall? I think that'd make it a little easier to answer your question.

Thanks for your comment!!! But the error is for a duplicate page rather than duplicate tags. SO I am wondering an advise me as to how to set up canonical tags in Wordpress to eliminate this error.
The error looks like this:
Pages with duplicate title tags Pages <a id="zip_0-anchor" class="zippedsection_title"></a>Office Space @ 601 West 26 Street - Starrett Lehigh Building/601-west-26th-street-starrett-lehigh-building-contains-executive-office-space-manhattan/page/3/601-west-26th-street-starrett-lehigh-building-contains-executive-office-space-manhattan -
Hi Kingalan1,
In your case I would like to let you know few things about meta description.
It’s believed that meta descriptions do not have any SEO value, but they are tremendously helpful in pulling traffic to your website from search engine results pages (SERPs). The more original, unique and compelling the meta description, the more likely it will lead to a click-through.
My Comment - In your case it doesn't matter because its about building address.
Duplicate meta descriptions could result in a bad user experience. It may appear to prospective customers as if your web pages are duplicated even if you have unique titles and content for each page. This can result in a loss of visitors and reduce the ROI of your pages. If you’re incredibly unlucky, it could also diminish the returns on your website as a whole.
My Comment - In this case my answer would be the same

Penalty for duplicate content on the same website?
Is it possible to get a penalty for duplicate content on the same website? I have a old custom-built site with a large number of filters that are pre-generated for speed. Basically the only difference is the meta title and H1 tag, with a few text differences here and there. Obviously I could no-follow all the filter links but it would take an enormous amount of work. The site is performing well in the search. I'm trying to decide whether if there is a risk of a penalty, if not I'm loath to do anything in case it causes other issues.

How would you handle this duplicate content - noindex or canonical?
Hello Just trying look at how best to deal with this duplicated content. On our Canada holidays page we have a number of holidays listed (PAGE A)
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | KateWaite
http://www.naturalworldsafaris.com/destinations/north-america/canada/suggested-holidays.aspx We also have a more specific Arctic Canada holidays page with different listings (PAGE B)
http://www.naturalworldsafaris.com/destinations/arctic-and-antarctica/arctic-canada/suggested-holidays.aspx Of the two, the Arctic Canada page (PAGE B) receives a far higher number of visitors from organic search. From a user perspective, people expect to see all holidays in Canada (PAGE A), including the Arctic based ones. We can tag these to appear on both, however it will mean that the PAGE B content will be duplicated on PAGE A. Would it be the best idea to set up a canonical link tag to stop this duplicate content causing an issue. Alternatively would it be best to no index PAGE A? Interested to see others thoughts. Duplicated Content with Index.php
Good Afternoon, My website uses Joomla CMS and has the htaccess rewrite code enabled to ensure the use of search engine friendly URLs (SEF's). While browsing the crawl diagnostics I have found that Moz considers the /index.php URL a duplicate to our root. I will always under the impression that the htaccess rewrite took care of that issue and obviously I would like to address it. I attempted to create a 301 redirect from the index.php URL to the root but ran into an issue when attempting to login to the admin portion of the website as the redirect sent me back to the homepage. I was curious if anyone had advice for handling the index.php duplication issue, specifically with Joomla. Additionally, I have confirmed that in Google Webmasters, under URL parameters, the index.php parameter is set as 'Representative URL'.

[E-commerce] Duplicate content due to color variations (canonical/indexing)
Hello, We currently have a lot of color variations on multiple products with almost the same content. Even with our canonicals being set, Moz's crawling tool seems to flag them as duplicate content. What we have done so far: Choosing the best-selling color variation (our "master product") Adding a rel="canonical" to every variation (with our "master product" as the canonical URL) In my opinion, it should be enough to address this issue. However, being given the fact that it's flagged as duplicate by Moz, I was wondering if there is something else we should do? Should we add a "noindex, follow" to our child products and "index, follow" to our master product? (sounds to me like such a heavy change) Thank you in advance

Is this all that is needed for a 'canonical' tag?
Hello, I have a Joomla site. I have put in a plugin to make the page source show: eg. <link href="[http://www.ditalia.com.au/designer-fabrics-designer-fabric-italian-material-and-french-lace](view-source:http://www.ditalia.com.au/designer-fabrics-designer-fabric-italian-material-and-french-lace)" rel="<a class="attribute-value">canonical</a>" /> Is this all that is need to tell the search engines to ignore the any other links or indexed pages with a url which is created automatically by the system before the SEF urls are initiated?

What constitutes duplicate content?
I have a website that lists various events. There is one particular event at a local swimming pool that occurs every few months -- for example, once in December 2011 and again in March 2012. It will probably happen again sometime in the future too. Each event has its own 'event' page, which includes a description of the event and other details. In the example above the only thing that changes is the date of the event, which is in an H2 tag. I'm getting this as an error in SEO Moz Pro as duplicate content. I could combine these pages, since the vast majority of the content is duplicate, but this will be a lot of work. Any suggestions on a strategy for handling this problem?
