RE: Google Analytics keywords metric and appropriate keywords
-
Greetings,
When running Google Analytics' keyword report, I see that the over 85% of the top 100 keywords used to find us include a word in our name (Eagle's Nest Foundation and Camp -- with "eagle" or "eagle's nest" being the most frequent) or the name of one of our programs. Does this mean that most folks searching for summer camps in North Carolina already know about us and that we therefore need to optimize for broader keywords, to cast a wider net for folks who don't already know about us?
Thanks,
Dave

Saibose, thank you for your input. I'm chagrined to say, though, that I don't know what an SEM campaign is, but I get your gist that it would really tell me if my interpretation is correct. So I have some research to do. We do have some very generic keywords working for us (summer camp north carolina, southeast, etc.) It is just that the actualy words folks are using to find us do include our name or some portion of it, or one of our program names -- it's not that we optimized for those words but of course we did use them.
Again, thanks for your help and for pointing me at SEM campaigns. I will try to research and figure out if we can afford to do that process (although you might be asking, Can you afford not to do that.... -- but we are a small nonprofit and I only work 16 hours a week. Anyway, I appreciate your insights.
Thanks,
dave

Thanks for your thoughts Martin. We are a regionally known summer camp but want to expand the universe of folks who know about us. I knew about the #10 ranking on google, but that has fallen -- we once were #6 at our highest. I will revisit the keyword tool to see if I can glean some new relevant kwyrds. I like your suggestion about investigating our landing pages relative to what keyword drew the person; I would hope they are relevant but there just might be something not sticky enough to keep them there, as our bounce rate is pretty high.
Thanks again, I appreciate your help!

Dave,
That isnt a good way to look at it. I would actually run a SEM campaign with the brand name and its variants to see impressions and then judge.
Also, I would start building up traffic for more generic keywords with the brand keywords. People generally dont search for brands, rather they search more for generic terms (North Carolina summer camps as an example).

It's hard to give specifics without seeing the data itself, but yes, your assumption is a fair one. Do you use traditional marketing methods like leafleting, newspaper/magasine adverts etc? Is your brand a fairly well known one locally, or nationally? If so, this would fit in with what you are seeing.
You're not, for example, ranking for summer camp carolina, and are only in the 10th slot for [summer camp north carolina](summer camp north carolina).
As I'm not sure of your SEO experience, I think it's fair to point you toward Google's keyword tool which can give you lots of ideas of what key phrases to target, as well as their rough search volume and competition.
summer camp nc is one such example that it threw up at a glance.
So yes, in an effort to increase traffic and leads, you almost certainly want to focus on the broader, less brand-orientated phrases (though this can be said for almost any SEO campaign).
It may also be worth making sure you are meeting the requirements and expectations of the demand you are already experiencing. If people are searching for "the name of [...] our programs", make sure you're making every effort to provide them with a relevent page.

How is Google Analytics defining page depth?
We run two websites and as part of our KPIs we are treating those who visit 3 or more pages of our website as a client served. As a digital team we are not convinced that this is the best metric to use as the improvements we are making to the sites mean that people are able to find the information quicker. Additionally other organisations including forums etc link to us so those users will get the info they need in one click. What I would like to know is how Google calculates page depth in GA. Are they treating the landing page as ground zero and then when users clicks a link they go one page deep? Or is the landing page, page depth 1 . Is page depth a measure of how many clicks a user needs to find their information?

Google Analytics reporting traffic for 404 pages
Hi guys, Unique issue with google analytics reporting for one of our sites. GA is reporting sessions for 404 pages (landing pages, organic traffic) e.g. for this page: http://www.milkandlove.com.au/breastfeeding-dresses/index.php the page is currently a 404 page but GA (see screenshot) is reporting organic traffic (to the landing page). Does anyone know any reasons why this is happening? Cheers. http://www.milkandlove.com.au/breastfeeding-dresses/index.php GK0zDzj.jpg

Alternative to Google Analytics
Hey Everyone, My company has just changed the order processing software we are using and it's causing some issues with Google Analytics conversion funnel tracking. Specifically, there is one point in the funnel where making certain selections (which about half the people do) causes the page to reload. Also, on the login/register page, if they miss a field, the software tells them missed the field, but loads a new page which has a different URL which is not a part of the funnel when a mistake like that isn't made. All of this is causing Google Analytics to report people as leaving the conversion funnel when they really haven't. About a third of the traffic is being shown as exiting the funnel with the exit URL being the exact same URL as the step they are supposedly exiting from (example: the visitor enters on page1, moves to page2, Google is showing that they exit on page2 and go to...page2. Does anyone have any suggestions of how to deal with this in Google Analytics? If not, do you have a recommendation of an alternative analytics program which can deal with the situations mentioned above? PS - Changing the way the checkout software works does not appear to be a viable option. Kurt Steinbrueck

Google Analytics Custom Reports eMails only one reporting tab
Goog Morning from 18 degrees C mostly cloudy Wetherby UIK 🙂 I'm on a mission to get away from manual reporting and move over to eMailing custom Google analytics reports. Thanks to this tutorail http://searchenginewatch.com/article/2175001/7-Time-Saving-Google-Analytics-Custom-Reports Ive made good progress but ive hit a snag. The snag being when i email the report the recipient only recieves one 1 report tab of data. This causes a problem when you eMail a report that has multiple reporting tabs like this: http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc53/zymurgy_bucket/tab-export-custom-problemcopy.jpg So my question is please..."When you eMail a recipient a custom report how can you ensure they receive "All" the reporting tabs data and not just one"? Any insights welcome 🙂

How to measure number of visits from Google News coming from Google Universal Search (NOT referral coming directly coming from news.google.com) with google analyitcs
I'm running a news site, and I have a problem of accuratly measuring which traffic is REALLY coming from google news. I analyzed a lot of individual articles and I come to the conclusion, that the visits, that come from the google news section in the universal search results are counted as "normal" search engine traffic in google analytics. So if you do a Google search for a topic that includes links from Google news, you don't get an accurate referral count. As an example, if you do a search for "eBay", incorporated into the page 1 search results you may also see Google news results as well.

If someone clicks on that Google news link that appears in Google search, it shows up in Google analytics as a referral from Google search, when it was actually from a Google news referral. I was already checking google analytics and google news help forums and searched SEO blogs for this. But I wasn't able to find a working solution. Can anybody help me out with this problem? Thanks so much, Matthias0
