Mobile site backlinks?
-
Hello,
Our mobile site redirects to desktop in a desktop browser and vice versa; however, they are different sites. This said, shouldn't the backlinks for our mobile site be the same as for our desktop site since one redirects to the other. We show no backlinks in my analysis? Any help or insight would be extremely appreciated!
Thank you!

Try to check the pages which are currently 1-1 - do the mobile friendly check for the desktop version. If it passes - you should be ok. If not - you'll have to hand it over to the technical dept & ask them to search for a solution. If necessary, escalate (depends on the % of mobile searches you currently have & the importance of the website for your business)

sorry but now I am being told that we cannot implement the alternate to canonical because we have a default header with no page delineation for (it pulls from somewhere else). as I am an seo and not a programmer, I at a loss as to implement this. Thoughts?

Thanks so much Dirk. Your have been extremely helpful!

In that case I would certainly not redirect to home - but just keep the desktop page. It's better to serve a non-optimised desktop page with the appropriate content than to send visitors to a non-related mobile homepage. If you have limited time - I would concentrate on your main search landing pages and your most popular pages in general- try to make mobile versions of these ones. You can always work on the rest of the content after Apr. 21st.
For the pages where you have the 1-1 I would do the rel alternate as advised by Google.

Dirk

Hi Dirk,
Our mobile site is a lot smaller than our desktop version, so where there was a relationship, we employed the 1:1; but if the mobile did not have the correlating page, we did redirect to the homepage. I'm not sure we have the time to create a page in mobile for all of our desktop pages. That being said, what is our next step?
Thanks

Hi Denise,
Unfortunately not that technical - but a bit scary of the remark 'defaulted all others to the homepage' - it sounds a lot like the 'common mistakes' on this page: https://developers.google.com/webmasters/mobile-sites/mobile-seo/common-mistakes/faulty-redirects?hl=en
Isn't your mobile site a 1-1 copy of the desktop version?
Are you using a CMS or is your site plain HTML. If you manage the pages in Dreamweaver - you can add the rel="alternate" in the section of your HTML. If it's a CMS, you'll probably need to Google a bit to find out how you can implement it.

Dirk

Hi Dirk,
Thanks for your quick response! We don't have the canonical: alternate on each page; however, in the "lib/functions" file, I manually entered the relationship between the mobile version url and the desktop version url; and defaulted all others to the homepage. Shouldn't this work the same? If not, how to I best approach this in Dreamweaver? Thanks again!!!!

Hi,
Did you properly set-up the configuration of both sites (see https://developers.google.com/webmasters/mobile-sites/mobile-seo/configurations/separate-urls?hl=en)?
Unless the links are specifically made to the mobile version, they will not appear in Webmastertools. The links from the desktop version will however count as well for the mobile version as Google considers both url's as the same entity (if set-up is done as described above)
rgds,
Dirk

Main Site and eCommerce Site URLs for SEO
My client currently has a main website on a url and an eCommerce site on a subdomain. The eCommerce site is currently not mobile friendly, has images that are too small and are problematic - and I believe it negates some of the SEO work we do for them. I had to turn off Google Shopping ads because the quality score was so low. That being said, they are rebuilding a shopping cart on a new platform that will be mobile friendly BUT the images are going to be tiny until they slowly replace images over several months. Would you keep the shopping cart on a subdomain, or make it part of the main website URL? Can it negatively impact the progress we have made on the main site SEO.

Duplicate Content within Site
I'm very new here... been reading a lot about Panda and duplicate content. I have a main website and a mobile site (same domain - m.domain.com). I've copied the same text over to those other web pages. Is that okay? Or is that considered duplicate content?

Site Categorization?
I know getting site categories to appear under the site are dependent on a lot of factors including site mapping. We have a site that does the categorization thing when you type in the sites url name however more people search for the name of the talent to find the site and the short url on the site is just his name, but shorter. However I was just wondering is their a way to optimize the site so that way we could get categorization to show up under the sites URL when they search for the talents full name I ask because the amount of people looking for the talents full name rather than the short name is a lot larger and I would like to see if we can take advantage of the real estate, but I honestly don't think there is a way, however I figured I would open it up to discussion to see if anyone has any ideas. Example: Site name is ABCD you type this into Google and you get ABCD.com about blog how to contact However the actual person whose site it is is ABCDEF and when you type that in you just get: ABCD.com without any of the categories appearing below the url. And that is what I'm asking about. Thanks as I can't seem to find a lot of information on this. However if there is another spot on the site talking about this please let me know I may just not be searching with the right terms.

What is wrong with my site?
I have been working hard for over two months on my sites in seomoz and have seen some nice results in some (www.etraxc.com/ and www-my-etraxc.com for instance. Still I am really frustrated by www.classroomconnection.us/. I cant even get on the first page with the search term "classroom connection." i would love some help on this one. On a related note, does it help to have links to YouTube videos about the content? If so, how do I ensure that this piece is working well for me? Thanks a ton!

Adding no follow links on my site
I am getting a warning about having too many links on my page www.accessoriesonline.co.uk (152) but I don't want to remove any links from the site. Its an ecommerce site with categories across the top, featured products and then a further category navigation in the footer. Would it be beneficial if I added a rel="nofollow" to the links in the footer as these are duplicates of the one's in the header or would this harm the links in the header and the destination URL's which I definitely want to be crawled? Also, does anyone know if SEOMOZ considers links with a rel=nofollow as an actually link when they calculate their overview? Thanks in advance
