What causes total external links to fluctuate so much?
-
On my dashboard, external links refers to links on other websites pointing to my own website, correct?
If so, I'm seeing some interesting data on my report this week. Apparently I have 129 external links. This is down by 380. What the heck happened here? I've been doing nothing differently, just chugging along, producing good content. What on earth would cause 380 links to my website just up and disappear?
I'm also tracking a competitor. This competitor currently has 3,262 external links. But this is up by 1,900 from the previous update. What the heck happened here? I know it's probably impossible to tell for sure, but what could have caused such a meteoric growth in my competitor? I can see if they already had 50,000 and they increased by 1.9k, but 1.9k is a significant fraction of their current external links.

It's pretty likely it's the index. This one was quite a bit smaller than the last, so a lot of URLs are missing. That affects link metrics like PA/DA, as well. Patrick's link to Moz Health and Rand's Q&A post will give you more information.
Do your due diligence, of course—it's possible that the issue _isn't _the update. But if nothing else has changed for you, that's the most likely explanation.

Hello,
I experienced the same exact thing this week. Results seem off, so I'm with Patrick on this one. I'm hopeful it's related to some of the issues that Moz is having.

Hi there
According to Moz Health, there have been some update issues happening lately; that could be one of the reasons why your link numbers have changed.
Just keep an eye on this. Rand also has an update in the Q+A section as well.
Hope this helps - good luck!

I am looking for a software to keep track of the back links or link building
Hi Guys, I am very new hear. I just joined. I have a few websites that I need to manage. I am looking for a software that will allow me to manually add the links that I have been able to acquire. It would also be a bonus if it could search for the links to my site and to see if its still active. Because I have a freelancer working a few hours a week on link building and I need to keep track of the links. I am looking for something simple and good. Any suggestions? By the way, I used Raven Tools many years ago, and it had this feature. But since joining Moz, I don't want to be paying for 2 subscriptions. And I don't know if Raven still has this feature. Your suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you. Ryan

Linking Between Sites
Hi everyone, Hope you are all doing well. If a company owns several different websites that are supposed to be different brands but are part of the same niche/sector is it OK to link between them? Or would this be seen as violation? Thanks

What value do external broken links give to a domain?
I ask, as I've just used opensite explorer to look at external links a competitor has, and I've found the high value ones at the top of the list go to a page that no longer exists on their site. Are these stiill of value in the SERP's, or have they messed up by not putting a 301 redirect on them?

External links--Does it matter which page they go to?
I'll be doing some linkbuilding in which I will be asking manufacturers of the products we sell to link back to our site. My thought was to have a single page for our "Valued Suppliers" with a badge that I would give them the embed code for. If the URL goes to a "Valued Supplier" page on our site where there are multiple manufacturers, will this help my entire site or only the page that's being linked to? Thanks in advance!
