Partnerships web pages and optimization- dangers and solutions?
-
My boss is in the process of building lot of new partnerships. The goal is to increase the number of mutual referrals. These are businesses that are not in the same industry, but have the same clients, so there is no competition.
He wants a separate Partners category, landing page and a subpage for each partner. On each partner page, he wants a link pointing back to the partner company, along with some information about that particular business.
In exchange, our partners would do the same- have a page dedicated to us with information and a link to our website.
By the way, this is not an affiliate program, just referral exchange program.I am worried about appearing like a link farm. Should I be?
From what I see, most partners of other companies are all listed on one page.My boss says others do this without any problems, but he is not an SEO person.
What are the dangers of doing it the way my boss wants?
What is the safest way to list business partners on our website while trying to accomplish what I have been asked (or as closely as possible)? No follow links, maybe? What about the metas and titles? NoIndex/NoFollow pages? (my boss wants these pages to be indexed).Your input is greatly appreciated.

It's listed right here in the Google Webmaster Guidelines:
"Building partner pages exclusively for the sake of cross-linking."
http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=66356
The guidelines also mentioned "excessive link exchanges" -- so what's deemed excessive? This is definitely a gray area.
I would nofollow the links just to be safe.

Hi,
Although I appreciate your thoughts, I feel that I am playing with fire if I had to add these links, since this program will expand to include more related industries.
I am responsible for the website's results and making sure it is safe, so it is my job to let my boss know about these things-good and bad. Being responsible for the website, it is not enough to just earn the paycheck and keep my mouth shut- this is not that kind of role.
Being opinionated and holding my boss from making a mistake is one of my duties, and so far, I have accomplished this. In the end, he has the final say, of course, and luckily my boss is intelligent and listens to my opinions, whether he likes them or not.
I am just trying to find the happy medium between making him happy and following the rules to the best of my abilities.I know all about the natural link-building and unique content, and I have built a lot of unique content for many years.
Thank you again

- How many of these is "a lot"? If it's 10 or so, I wouldn't be worried at all.
- Does your boss pay your paycheck? If yes, I'd do what he says if you aren't sure because it is his business, money, etc.
- The safest way to list business partners on your site is naturally. This means that if it makes sense to give each of them their own page, then do it. If it means to put them all on the same page do that.
- Don't worry about no follow links in this case, especially if you are in related industries. Linking to sites in the same industry is a good thing. I would go as far as to say link to more than just these companies so that it doesn't look like you only link to people who link to you if you are worried about looking like a link farm or circle.
- On each of their pages I would make a strong effort to create unique content. Not just copy and paste from their websites. This way you are adding value to the web.
-
Yes it would be a bad idea.
If you must, just nofollow the links. The dangers are getting ALL the sites penalized and that just isn't cool to have it happen.

Homepage outranking subpage for main keyword, but subpage is more optimized for the keyword.
Recently did a site redesign, 95% of the site and keywords are matching up in terms of keyword to what page is ranking for that keyword. All and all was expected and pleased with the redesign, except... A subpage ( PA 1 ) really is a landing page for the main keyword in question is only one jump from the hompage, is it's own category and has the exact match anchor text to its page from the homepage, has a total of 14 total keyword usages. The homepage has a PA of 28, mentioned the keyword once in the body text in form of anchor link, yet still steals the thunder from the main keyword. There aren't a ton of backlinks, but ones we do have 95% of them goto the homepage. Subpage in question has a on page grade of A for the keyword, while the homepage has an on page grade of C. No backlinks at all for this page yet. Subpage even uses the keyword as it's url name, so kinda at a loss to what else I can do, it's a new page, so alll I keep thinking is the issue is the page authority, it's linked to from other pages on the site. Any suggestions?

MOZ indicates 404 page and 0 backlinks, after 301 redirect. The best redirect solution?
Dear MOZers, I have one concern i would like to ask you.. My website have valuable backlinks to the most important page which is awesome. But, some of those backlinks is old URL which is 301 redirected to the URL I use today. As far as i know 301 redirects pass page rank, so it should be alright. (?) Link i use today: domain.com/awesome-url/ My backlink: domain.com/old-boring-url/ 301 redirected to domain.com/awesome-url/ What bothers me is that in MOZ report (Link opportunities) MOZ indicates my important URL (domain.com/old-boring-url/) return 404. But, it is not true. It is 301 redirected to domain.com/awesome-url/ and it works! I am worried i am losing important link juice here(!?) Also, my On Page Grader tool for domain.com/awesome-url/ reports 0 backlinks. And that is not true! I know exactly which websites are linking back, only problem is that those website are using old URL (domain.com/old-boring-url/) to link back to my website. Am i doing something wrong? Is there a better way to redirect and save valuable link juice for my page? Thank you very much! PS The URL was changed in March 2015.

Links to deep pages good for Homepage ranking?
Hello Moz community. My question today is: if I got great backlinks with anchor text "abc" coming to a deep resource page in my site, will these links help my homepage rank for keyword "xyz"? In other words, are all links (regarless of anchor text) coming to a site helpful for the homepage to rank for its main keyword? Thanks.

Reject a link from a not found page
Hello, I am writing because I have a question about link building. My page has got a link from this URL http://fundacionbanesto.com/ (PageRank 6) but I know that it no longer exists. Do you think it is negative for my site? Should I reject it? Thanks in advance.

Same Page, Multiple URLS- Canonical tag? Redirect?
I just read this article about how google views multiple versions of the same page as different pages of duplicate content. My website, www.telikin.com currently has many versions of the home page. There is: www.telikin.com
Link Building | | Telikin
www.telikin.com/index
www.telikin.com/index.php
www.telikin.com/index.php/ All of these seem to be their own URLS, If i use the open site explorer tool to search for links pointing to these URLS, the www.telikin.com domain shows about 700 links, and the www.telikin.com/index.php shows about 63 links. My questions: Is my SEO suffering as a result of having these different pages? Does google realize that links pointing to www.telikin.com/index.php should count towards the seo of the www.telikin.com page? If this is hurting my company's website, how do I solve this problem? I am not versed as a webmaster, so I don't understand what the best course of action would be. Should I request that our webmaster somehow redirects all traffic from the other URLS to the main www.telikin.com URL? Should I be using canonical tags on all important pages? If i do, for example, use a canonical tag on the www.telikin.com page, will Google then know to send all link juice from the www.telikin.com/index.php page to the www.telikin.com page? We also have a Joomla blog that seems to duplicate pages many times over, but that is a problem that I will have to address another time. Any comments/suggestions are more than welcome. Thanks, Dave0 -
What are your favorite tactics for getting links to money-pages?
We've got content marketing and other great tactics for getting links to content pages, but what are your favorite tactics for getting links to your money pages (i.e. product pages, landing pages, devices pages, sales letters, etc.) For example: For certain sites (especially some ecommerce sites), one can get a few backlinks by doing giveaways, contests, or events Some sites can give their product to bloggers to review If you're selling an exciting product and/or a product that appeals to a passionate user base, such tactics can work great. There are some sites that such tactics won't work very well for, though. For example, if you sell a boring or highly specialized product that bloggers won't want to review or giveaway as a contest prize - such as valves used in a specific commercial application, or an expensive B2B product that you can't really giveaway. Creativity is of course important, but sometimes it can only take you so far. What are your favorite strategies for getting quality backlinks to your "money pages" especially for sites that don't fit into the "ecommerce site selling cool stuff" category?

"Links" page Value?
I was wondering, Is there any value in these days to advice clients to create LINK US or LINKS page with bunch of reciprocal links on it and solely for link exchange, I remember reading somewhere that, it is little useless in terms for ranking nowadays? Am I right? Thanks!

Can changing our links page make our rankings drop through the floor?
Hi all, When I first started at my current job, most of the link building (aside from submitting to free directories left, right and centre) was replying to every spammy reciprocal email and adding them to our links page! Now we're all a bit wiser about such matters (thanks SEOMoz!), I want to get our links page turned into something actually useful. My plan was to get it neatly categorised, with recommendations, cut out unrelated links that would be useless to visitors and call it something like "Our Friends" I thought this might be useful for future link building efforts, but in its current state, it's a complete mess. However, I am worried about cutting out a lot of links if they have been reciprocal ones. Are the sort of sites that would be sending typical spammy link exchange emails for window installation in NY likely to notice our UK education site taking away their link six months later and take away ours? If they do, will losing links from these sites harm us? Perhaps more importantly, is my plan a terrible idea in the first place? Look forward to hearing from y'all!
