Blogger to Wordpress 301 and Meta Refresher Redirect
-
Hi Everyone!
So my client has a blogger that she has developed a good amount of link equity for. It is a hersite.blogspot.com (she doesn't own her own domain yet). She is moving to the Wordpress platform though and the only way we can do a redirect is through a meta refresh redirect (since she doesn't have access to the servers on blogger). I went to Google Webmasters to do a change of address and found that the 301 checker said it couldn't find any 301 redirect, which is disappointing. What we're planning is telling all the places that link to the blog to change their links to the new blog but other than that what does anyone recommend to keep this link strength?
Thanks!

Hi There
This seems like a way to do custom 301 redirects - http://stackoverflow.com/questions/24795465/use-301-redirect-in-google-blogger-blogspot - is that method possible for you?
-
Hi there
Do you have a web development company that you can pass this request off to? If not, I would contact Wordpress and see what they recommend doing.
According to this plugin, there are no meta refreshes here. Have you looked into this plugin?
-
It's impossible to get access to that server and all the Blogger to Wordpress plugins I see use meta refreshers as well. I'm kinda stuck with this issue.
-
Hi there
joannagoddard.blogspot.com is returning a 200, so yes, it's not going to work in GWMT.
What I would do is see if you can get access to the server. If not, take a look at Wordpress redirect plugins. Depending on the account your client has, you may (I am not entirely sure here) have to upgrade the account and implement it that way.
Let me know if you have any questions or comments!
-
Sure. It's joannagoddard.blogspot.com. The issue is that I don't have access to the servers since it's on Blogger so I can't do a 301 redirect. I'm currently doing a meta refresher but GWT won't let me do a change of address without a 301.

Hi there
Read this resource quick and make sure that your site is redirecting properly. It could be an issue with your implementation.
Do you have a URL you can share here?
Let me know - thanks so much!
-
Thanks! But how can I do a change of address in Google Webmaster Tools. GWT doesn't allow me to make the change cause it doesn't see 301 redirects.
-
Hi there
Do the following:
-
Update your sitemap
-
Update internal links
-
I recommend relative URLs so if your address changes, you are saving time
-
Run a crawl with ScreamingFrog to see there are no errors or issues
I would also check out this migration guide from Moz just to make sure all your bases are covered.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

301 Redirects Showing As 307 Redirects
Hi, Our clients are adamant that they have set up 301 permanent redirects on their websites, but when we check using Screaming Frog and various online HTTP status code checkers they are showing as 307 temporary redirects. Examples;

Consolidating 301 Redirects to Decrease Page Load Times - Major Concerns?
Hello, I am being pushed to consolidate our over 6k redirects that have accumulated over the course of 4 years. These redirects are one of the many factors causing extensive load times for our website. Many to most or over a year old, have not been used, or simply redirect back to the home page. Other than looking to keep the pages that have external links (also looking for recommendations/tools), are there other best practices from an SEO stand point to ensure there are no major hits to our website. A little more info, I am looking to pair 6K down by Removing all Redirects that have not been used Removing all redirects that are over 1 yr+ Remove all redirects that redirect to simply the home page or a smaller big bucket subfolder

This should take the number from 6K to around 300. Are there any major concerns? Pat0 -

301 Redirect vs Domain Alias
We have hundreds of domains which are either alternate spelling of our primary domain or close keyword names we didn't want our competitor to get before us. The primary domain is running on a dedicated Windows server running IIS6 and set to a static IP. Since it is a static IP and not using host headers any domain pointed to the static IP will immediately show the contents of the site, however the domain will be whatever was typed. Which could be the primary domain or an alias. Two concerns. First, is it possible that Google would penalize us for the alias domains or dilute our primary domain "juice"? Second, we need to properly track traffic from the alias domains. We could make unique content for those performing well and sell or let expire those that are sending no traffic. It's not my goal to use the alias domains to artificially pump up our primary domain. We have them for spelling errors and direct traffic. What is the best practice for handling one or both of these issues?

301 redirects for individual products - should I keep the old ones?
Hello We are just now starting up a niche site that will be the new home for a large group of products from an old site. Apart from straight up informative text links, we have set up 301 redirects for the 100 most important products from the old to the new site. Right now, we are in a transition period where we openly tell our visitors that we have a new site for this certain group of products. My question is: for how long should we keep the products on the old site? Can we remove them straight away, since our intentions of the 301 redirects is to preserve the serp positions for the most important products? Does it matter to google if we let the products remain on the old site for a while? Regards
