Which are the best website reporting tools for speed and errors
-
Hi, i have just made some changes on my site by adding some redirects and i want to know what affect this has had on my site www.in2town.co.uk
I have been using tools such as Pingdom tools, http://gtmetrix.com but these always give me different time reports so i do not know the true speed of my site and give me different advice. So i am wanting to know how to check the true speed for my site in the UK and how to check for the errors to make it better
any advice would be great on which tools to use

Thank you alex i will have a look now. Cannot believe that different tools are bringing back different results

The loading speed of any website will vary.
I use the following to test speed:
- tools.pingdom.com/fpt/ gives a good visual breakdown (similar to GTMetrix)
- www.websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze/ gives some good recommendations
- Network tab on Google Chrome Developer Tools (Ctrl+Shift+I on a PC)
- there are also various plugins available like YSlow and Speed Tracer
Also check out this article: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/15-tips-to-speed-up-your-website
Are there any errors in particular you want to spot? http://validator.w3.org/ will pick up HTML validation errors, Xenu Link Sleuth will find crawl errors (as will the SEOmoz crawler, and Google and Bing's Webmaster Tools).

Hi Diane, you can also try GT Metrix . Free tool that gives you very detailed and accurate information on your site speed and recommended fixes.

thanks for that, will have a look now

Hi Diane,
For errors I prefer W3c Validator : http://validator.w3.org/
And for page speed Google web page speed : https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights
Try them out and let me know...

Sitemap error in Webmaster tools - 409 error (conflict)
Hey guys, I'm getting this weird error when I submit my sitemap to Google. It says I'm getting a 409 error in my post-sitemap.xml file (https://cleargear.com/post-sitemap.xml). But when I check it, it looks totally fine. I am using YoastSEO to generate the sitemap.xml file. Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a big deal? If so, Does anyone know how to fix? Thanks EwTswL4

To avoid errors in our Moz crawl, we removed subdomains from our host. (First we tried 301 redirects, also listed as errors.) Now we have backlinks all over the web that are broken. How bad is this, from a pagerank standpoint?
Our MOZ crawl kept telling us we had duplicate page content even though our subdomains were redirected to our main site. (Pages from Wineracks.vigilantinc.com were 301 redirected to vigilantinc.com/wineracks.) Now, to solve that problem, we have removed the wineracks.vigilantinc.com subdomain. The error report is better, but now we have broken backlinks - thousands of them. Is this hurting us worse than the duplicate content problem?

HTML Encoding Error
Okay, so this is driving me nuts because I should know how to find and fix this but for the life of me cannot. One of the sites I work for has a long-standing crawl error in Google WMT tools for the URL /a%3E that appears on nearly every page of the site. I know that a%3E is an improperly encoded > but I can't seem to find where exactly in the code its coming from. So I keep putting it off and coming back to it every week or two only to wrack my brain and give up on it after about an hour (since its not a priority and its not really hurting anything). The site in question is https://www.deckanddockboxes.com/ and some of the pages it can be found on are /small-trash-can.html, /Dock-Step-Storage-Bin.html, and /Standard-Dock-Box-Maxi.html (among others). I figured it was about time to ask for another set of eyes to look at this for me. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Links to Website Author
I'm a website developer, and in the past I have usually added a tiny backlink to the footer of my clients' websites like this: Website Design by MyCompanyName I understand that Google sees this as a low-quality backlink. However, I was wondering if such links can hurt my rankings. Does Penguin sees these links as spam? If so, should I add a rel="nofollow" to the links? Is there anything else I should change? I do not want to remove these links completely because they are good for marketing my business. I just want to minimize any negative SEO impact of the links. I appreciate your input. Thanks.

Canonicalisation - Best Approach?
Hi I have been reading into canonicalisation and I am looking for professional advice and guidance on the best approach as there are many conflicting views on how to implement a solution. I have added to the homepage http://www.cheapfindergames.com/" /> so that http://cheapfindergames.com and index.php redirects to the www version. Or would it be better using .htaccess if this is the case what code would be needed to achieve the above? Many Thanks

404 Errors in Google Webmaster Tools
Hello, Google webmaster tools is returning our URLs as 404 errors: http://www.celebritynetworth.com/watch/D5GrrPEN9Oc/tom-mccarthy-floating/ When we enter the URL into the browser it loads the page just fine. Is there a way to determine why Google Webmaster Tools is returning a 404 error when the link loads perfectly fine in a browser? Thanks, Alex
