Natural Fluctuation in Search Traffic
-
This is going to sound like a weird question...
I'm curious to know whether there is a natural fluctuation in the actual number of searches being made online each week. It would be great to relate this to the performance of my own organic traffic each week.
For example, if organic search traffic is down 10% week on week, is that because search in general is down 10%?
Has anybody ever looking into this?

Thanks heaps Patrick.
Do you know any way that we could see the aggregate volume of searches on Google over time?
Kind of like a google trends report for all searches?

Hi Karen
You could use your Search Console data and watch your average positions and search queries (with change) data:
To do this:
- Login to Search Console
- Click "Search Queries" under "Search Traffic" in the left sidebar menu in the profile
- Click "Top queries"
- Click "With change" under the graph
- See if impressions are going up or down
- See if your positions are changing
- If impressions are going down but your positions stays in the same area, search is probably down
- If impressions are going up but your positions go down, then it's probably a site/content issue
- I would also check your CTR and meta descriptions
You can also keep an eye on Google Trends as they keep very good track of search for different queries. Also, MozCast is a good friend as well to help you gauge fluctuations in SERPs.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

Search Console Change of Address Tool Issue
We're currently migrating few "event" mini sites to a main site that will have a subfolder for each event.. Example:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | RichardUK
newsite.com/event1 The issue is that Search console is not able to verify this kind of redirect:
example.com --> 301 --> newsite.com/event Do you know any work around for this? I was thinking of using a subdomain instead which will in turn redirect to the /event subfolder.. but with each hop it will diminish the link's strength. I prefer not to leave it as subdomain as data gets mashed up in Google Analytics with subdomains and we have seen worse ranking results with subdomains. Any help is greatly appreciated.0 -
URL Parameters Settings in WMT/Search Console
On an large ecommerce site the main navigation links to URLs that include a legacy parameter. The parameter doesn’t actually seem to do anything to change content - it doesn’t narrow or specify content, nor does it currently track sessions. We’ve set the canonical for these URLs to be without the parameter. (We did this when we started seeing that Google was stripping out the parameter in the majority of SERP results themselves.) We’re trying to best strategize on how to set the parameters in WMT (search console). Our options are to set to: 1. No: Doesn’t affect page content’ - and then the Crawl field in WMT is auto-set to ‘Representative URL’. (Note, that it's unclear what ‘Representative URL’ is defined as. Google’s documentation suggests that a representative URL is a canonical URL, and we've specifically set canonicals to be without the parameter so does this contradict? ) OR 2. ‘Yes: Changes, reorders, or narrows page content’ And then it’s a question of how to instruct Googlebot to crawl these pages: 'Let Googlebot decide' OR 'No URLs'. The fundamental issue is whether the parameter settings are an index signal or crawl signal. Google documents them as crawl signals, but if we instruct Google not to crawl our navigation how will it find and pass equity to the canonical URLs? Thoughts? When i search for my domain name - google asks "did you mean" - why?
Hi all, I just noticed something quite odd - if i do a search for my domain name (see: http://goo.gl/LBc1lz) google shows my domain as first result, but it also asks "did i mean" and names another website with very similar name. the other site has far lower PA/DA according to Moz, any ideas why google is doing this? and more inportantly how i could stop it? please advise James

Recommended e-commerce site search for Magento?
Does anyone have recommendations for any particular site searches for large e-commerce sites based on Magento? Some (hopeful) requirements: Possibility to segment product pages and blog content on results page Doesn't cause any major SEO or technical issues Understands semantic search Ability to filter results Ability to sort (e.g. by price, popularity, new in stock) It'd be really useful to see examples and know if there are any particular issues to be aware of. Thanks. 🙂

Why does the site I am working on have so few visits from organic search results?
Hello! I am not very experienced with SEO, but I am trying to help out on a site that has been around since 2010 and has well over a thousand pages of high-quality, original content, with more being added all the time. Only around 65 of the site's daily visits come from organic search results; this seems very low. There has already been significant SEO work done on the site. Is there something about the site that strikes anyone as obviously getting in the way of organic traffic? The URL is ellenjovin.com. I would appreciate any thoughts you may have. Thank you very much!

Local Showroom Tel Showing Up in SERP for Branded Term Search?
We encountered an issue: when user search for a branded term in UK on Google UK, one of the showroom got listed in SERP under site links as a location with Location icon and takes over a few lines - their address and phone number are displayed. This caused confusion for user as it's only one of our showrooms and we don't want to direct calls to the showroom this way. I'm suspecting somehow the localization factor came into play but not sure how to remove the showroom phone number from being displayed. Anyone has any insight/experience with this? Thanks
