Taking descriptions from Manufacturer sites and Duplicate content
-
We are doing some inventory improvements eg new photographs from various angles, etc. We are also writing descriptions for each product.. As one of our suppliers has perfect desriptions on their site what is the theory on how duplicate content will affect our ranking for these products if we copy and paste? Also if we change the descriptions, just how different do they need to be? Thanks
-
Yes it is Sean. However, I thought I saw that SEOMoz included it in a blog post somewhere. Perhaps if you email them they can tell you where? I just tried to find it and the only "Free" one I can seem to find is Wil Reynolds' presentation. I'll look around a little more and if I can find the link I'll send it.

Its all coming back to me. My SEO brain is a bit rusty unlike my alter ego who sometimes posts here..
We are lucky on this occasion as the manufacturer site has great B2C descriptions which sell the product well. Also, none of our main competitors are taking the descriptions indeed nor have they taken time to write their own.
Thanks for your answer. I'm off to watch those videos

Hi Sean,
This is a pretty common scenario for e-commerce. I am in-house SEO for a large e-commerce site specializing in profession audio video equipment. It's highly competitive and also highly technical. You often see resellers copying and pasting manufacturer descriptions. While it's not optimal, and unique, robust description are obviously better, there are times when just getting a mass number of products up on the website quickly makes it necessary to copy and paste some descriptions. While Google most likely isn't going to penalize you (unless you copy verbatim a manufacturer's page, HTML and all), your content probably will never rank as high as it might with really great, well-written descriptions that speak to your specific audience.
As far as your question concerning re-writing the descriptions, if you simply change some words around or slip in some synonyms instead of doing a complete re-write, I'd consider not doing that. The reason being that you are going to end up with content that is still substantially similar to the original. According to Google's Matt Cutts, content that is "substantially similar" is the same as duplicate content. Here's his interview with Eric Enge regarding that issue: http://www.stonetemple.com/articles/interview-matt-cutts-012510.shtml
IMHO, most manufacturer descriptions are pretty horrible anyway. They aren't written for your customers, they are written for their customers (which in this case is you). Generally those descriptions tend to be highly technical in nature and not compelling from a marketing viewpoint. You'd be far better off writing one by one unique descriptions that really speak to your customer personas. I know on a big site how huge a task that can be. But, even on a large site it can be tackled over several months with some concentrated dedication. Fabio Riccotta gave a great 15-minute presentation on how he accomplished this on a very large e-commerce site over the course of several months: http://www.seomoz.org/videos/e-commerse-seo-tips-and-tricks
All that being said, I can totally relate to the daunting task it is to churn out high-quality and unique product descriptions. It's something we struggle to do every day! Hope this is helpful

By default, index.html is being loaded, but this is the only index.html I have in the folder. And it looks like the crawler sees two different pages with different DA... What should I do to handle this issue?

Woocommerce Duplicate Page Content Issue
Hi, I'm receiving a duplicate content error. It says that this url: https://kidsinministry.org/childrens-ministry-curriculum/?option=com_content&task=view&id=20&Itemid=41 is a duplicate of this: http://kidsinministry.org/childrens-ministry-curriculum I'm using wordpress, woocommerce, and not really sure how to even address this. I tried adding this to .htaccess but it didn't redirect the url: 301 Redirects Redirect 301 https://kidsinministry.org/childrens-ministry-curriculum/?option=com_content&task=view&id=20&Itemid=41 http://kidsinministry.org/childrens-ministry-curriculum/ Anyone have any ideas? Are descriptions in Social Media Accounts seen as Duplicate Content bt SE?
Hello, I was wondering: If someone (like me) has same or very similar description for all social accounts (eg google plus, linkedin, etc also considering less famous or more specific accounts) profiles, will it be considered as duplicate content by search engines? And what if the content and description will be similar also to the one in the website? Will this be duplicate for the website? Thank you!

What's the best way to solve this sites duplicate content issues?
Hi, The site is www.expressgolf.co.uk and is an e-commerce website with lots of categories and brands. I'm trying to achieve one single unique URL for each category / brand page to avoid duplicate content and to get the correct URL's indexed. Currently it looks like this... Main URL http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green Different Versions http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green/ http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green/1 http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green/2 http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green/3 http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green/4 http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green/all http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green/1/ http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green/2/ http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green/3/ http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green/4/ http://www.expressgolf.co.uk/shop/clothing/galvin-green/all/ Firstly, what is the best course of action to make all versions point to the main URL and keep them from being indexed - Canonical Tag, NOINDEX or block them in robots? Secondly, do I just need to 301 the (/) from all URL's to the non (/) URL's ? I'm sure this question has been answered but I was having trouble coming to a solution for this one site. Cheers, Paul

Thin/Duplicate Content
Hi Guys, So here's the deal, my team and I just acquired a new site using some questionable tactics. Only about 5% of the entire site is actually written by humans the rest of the 40k + (and is increasing by 1-2k auto gen pages a day)pages are all autogen + thin content. I'm trying to convince the powers that be that we cannot continue to do this. Now i'm aware of the issue but my question is what is the best way to deal with this. Should I noindex these pages at the directory level? Should I 301 them to the most relevant section where actual valuable content exists. So far it doesn't seem like Google has caught on to this yet and I want to fix the issue while not raising any more red flags in the process. Thanks!

Large Scale Ecommerce. How To Deal With Duplicate Content
Hi, One of our clients has a store with over 30,000 indexed pages but less then 10,000 individual products and make a few hundred static pages. Ive crawled the site in Xenu (it took 12 hours!) and found it to by a complex mess caused by years of hack add ons which has caused duplicate pages, and weird dynamic parameters being indexed The inbound link structure is diversified over duplicate pages, PDFS, images so I need to be careful in treating everything correctly. I can likely identify & segment blocks of 'thousands' of URLs and parameters which need to be blocked, Im just not entirely sure the best method. Dynamic Parameters I can see the option in GWT to block these - is it that simple? (do I need to ensure they are deinxeded and 301d? Duplicate Pages Would the best approach be to mass 301 these pages and then apply a no-index tag and wait for it to be crawled? Thanks for your help.
