301 redirect file question
-
Hi Everyone,
I am creating a list of 301 redirects to give to a developer to put into Magento. I used Screaming Frog to crawl the site, but I have noticed that all of their urls 302 to another page. I am wondering if I should 301 the first URL to the url on the new site, or the second. I am thinking the first, but would love some confirmation.
Thank you!

Google will index the second URL but will not pass any SEO weight to it since, as a temporary redirection, the first URL is expected to be restored shortly.
You can find a very helpful explanation about redirections here: https://moz.com/learn/seo/redirection

HI Alyssa, Dave here.
I know you may not want to give out your URL publically but if you can send me your URL as a private message I'm happy to look into it specifically as I'd hate to give the wrong answer. I'll answer it here in this thread so it can serve as useful to others but I'll keep the URL to myself.

Thanks Daniel. There isn't a good reason anymore, we are moving the site and have a new design. I am thinking that Google is indexing the original URL though since they see the second URL as temporary. Is this incorrect?

Hi Dave,
The current site is .net I believe. We are moving to a Magento site. It's an old site so we're not sure why they have all these 302's, but I am planning on making them all 301's so we can move whatever rank there is.
Wouldn't Google actually be indexing the original URL since these are 302 redirects and they see them as temporary?
Thanks for your help!

I don't know the specific scenario you're talking about obviously but I'd recommend first checking under:
system > configuration > web > url options
Majento shouldn't be generating a 302 on every page but I'll be the first to say that Majento also isn't my strong suit. I don't like the sounds of it however as a 302 can bleed out your PageRank.
At what I'm hearing I'd recommend for the 301s you're setting up now - point them to the final target. Even if Majento was doing a 301 I'd still recommend this. Think of it like you're asking me for directions and I know both the final destination and another guy who does too. Would you rather I just told you where to go or pointed at the other guy?
That said, hopefully someone can come up with a more specific Majento answer for you.

If there is a good reason for those redirects to be temporary, use the first URL. If not use the second.

Should I set 301 Redirects or keep old permalinks?
I just built a new site for a client and the new site has pretty links like domain.com/about-us. The old site has been around for a VERY long time and had links like domain.com/aboutus. I want to do 301 redirects because from my understanding, it minimizes the negative SEO impact. But the client wants to keep the permalinks without the hyphens to match the old links. What is the best route, considering SEO? BTW, the site is still on the same domain. Thanks in advance for your help! Neik

What to do with old content after 301 redirect
I'm going through all our blog and FAQ pages to see which ones are performing well and which ones are competing with one another. Basically doing an SEO content clean up. Is there any SEO benefit to keeping the page published vs trashing it after you apply a 301 redirect to a better performing page?

.EDU via a 301 Redirect?
I recently received a link to my website from an .edu. However, the way they configured it was they pointed the link to one of their internal pages and then made that page 301 to my website. Is there anyway to gain any link juice from that sort of link?

301 redirect Issues
my clients site is www.greenbayharvest.co.uk When you enter that URL it redirects to www.greenbayharvest.co.uk/shop, dont ask why, thats the way they set it up and thats what im stuck with. So, how do i resolve the 301 issue here. we want all things to point to www.greenbayharvest.co.uk, in terms of SEO but does the fact that there is a redirect going to /shop make this an issue? we appear to have: www.greenbayharvest.co.uk/shop www.greenbayharvest.co.uk greenbayharvest.co.uk greenbayharvest.co.uk/shop all these URL's go to the same same page so what is the best way to correct this? thanks for any help on this Lee

Is this a safe 301 redirect?
We are moving our site from one platform to another. Currently on our site we have two homepages. "www.homepage.com" and "www.homepage.com/Index" Both pages have some high quality links pointing in on them. The problem: We are going to be doing a 301 redirect from "www.homepage.com/Index" page to "www.homepage.com" as we are moving platforms at this time we weren't going to create a "www.homepage.com/Index" page all. This leaves this page as an empty URL. With this webpage disappearing all together will we lose traction as we are redirecting an empty URL? Or is it better to recreate this "www.homepage.com/Index" on our new platform redirect it and wait for google to deIndex this page for us? As well is there a tutorial for how to implement 301 redirects or is this something worth looking for a developer and pay someone to do?

301 Redirect "wildcard" question
I have been looking at the SEOmoz redirect guide for some advice but I can't seem to find the answer : http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/redirection I have lots of URLs from a previous version of a site that look like the following: sitename.com/-c-25.html?sort=2d&page=1 sitename.com/-c-25.html?sort=3a&page=1 etc etc. I want to write a redirect so whenever a URL with the terms "-c-25.html" is requested it redirects to a specified page, regardless of what comes after the question mark. These URLs were created by our previous ecommerce software. The 'c' is for category, and each page of the cateogry created a different URL. I want to do these so I can rediect all of these URLs to the appropraite new cateogry page in a single redirect. Thanks for any help.
