Importance of minimal markup on a page
-
Moz.com's 2013 SEO study gave some value to "Total # of Characters in the HTML Code" (https://moz.com/search-ranking-factors/2013). Is having minimal HTML on a page still a ranking factor, even if not a huge one?
-
The study was looking at the correlation between the amount of HTML and higher Google rankings. Although I don't believe it's an actual ranking factor, we typically find a small but positive correlation with longer content pieces. The simple explanation being that longer content has more "stuff" to rank for, and there's a corresponding correlation to longer content and links earned, which also helps with rankings.

More than "minimal", "working" html, css etc is probably a ranking factor - if not directly, then via good UX.
"Minimal" is a somewhat problematic attribute in my opinion. In some context, you can have really minimalised code; in many contexts, best practices should be applied - if only to better maintain code, markup etc. Sometimes you do face technical or ressource restrictions and sometimes, non-minimal practices are just better. (All-time favourite: A certain wordpress plugin that minifies code, in theory speeding up loading time; in practice it oftentimes quadruples the loading time due to its own execution. Nothing won there.)
Moz has now taken to see small markup as a spam signal (whyever) - one of my pages gets the warning that "Site Mark-up is Abnormally Small There's a high ratio of visible text compared to HTML, JavaScript, etc." Well yes, it is self-coded and has pretty much nothing that is not needed, making concessions only for having source code that is readable by humans as well. This should for sure not be seen as a call to make bigger source code when it is not necessary.
TL;DR: Clean code without unnecessary stuff helps in maintenance and with finding errors should they appear; more than minifying code, I'd worry about page speed and functionality.

Well, that was from 2 yrs ago, but even then it really wasn't a huge ranking factor. Having minimal HTML code on a page is not something I would be concerned about at all.
Just make sure your HTML code does not contain tables.

Validated pages on GSC displays 5x more pages than when performing site:domain.com?
Hi mozzers, When checking the coverage report on GSC I am seeing over 649,000 valid pages https://cl.ly/ae46ec25f494 but when performing site:domain.com I am only seeing 130,000 pages. Which one is more the source of truth especially I have checked some of these "valid" pages and noticed they're not even indexed?

New pages not ranking
I published some new landing pages about a month a go which are much better quality than previous pages and on an optimised URL. The old pages never ranked and the new pages aren't ranking either although they are much better. The old pages 301 redirect to the new pages. Any quick ways I can at least get them ranking? Not expecting Page 1 overnight but to at least see the new pages on Page 5 would be great!

How important is admin-ajax.php?
Hi there! It's been a long time since I last did a technical audit of a site. I've currently playing with the 'fetch as google' tool to find out if we're blocking anything vital. The site is based on Wordpress, and after a recent hacking incident, a previous SEO moved the login portal from domain.com/wp-admin/ to domain.com/pr3ss/wp-admin/ - to stop people finding it. Fair enough. But they then updated the robots.txt file to look like this: User-agent: *

Disallow: /pr3ss/wp-admin/ Now, some pages are trying to draw on theme elements like: http://www.domain.com/pr3ss/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php
http://www.domain.com/pr3ss/wp-content/themes/bestpracticegroup/images/column_wrapper_bg.png And are naturally being blocked (not that this seems to affect the way pages are rendering in Google's eyes) A good SEO friend of mine has suggested allowing the theme folder, and any sub folders where this becomes an issue. What are your thoughts? Is it even worth disallowing the /pr3ss/wp-admin/ path? Cheers guys and gals! All the best, John. I've found a couple of the theme's0 -

Is there an optimal ratio of external links to a page vs internal links originating at that page ?
I understand that multiple links fro a site dilute link juice. I also understand that external links to a specific page with relevant anchortext helps ranking. I wonder if there is an ideal ratioof tgese two items

301 redirect every pages?
Good evening, my question might sound stupid but please forgive me, I am still learning SEO. If I build a new site that will replace an existing site. Is there any point to do a 301 redirect for pages that had no inbound link so, no juice to pass? I kind of think that it would be a better practice to 301 redirect each pages to a page that make sense on the new web site .... but here is why I think that. Why I say that If I am lucky, many of my old web site pages will be indexed, many of them having no inbound links. So once the new web site online, until all my new web sites pages are indexed, I could imagine Google would send people to the index pages (the old ones that do not exist anymore)... I am right? So in that case, if I do a 301 redirect only for pages that have inbound links, the user would end up on a 404 page. Could you tell me if it make sense how I think? Thanks a lot !! Nancy P.S. I would not redirect if it make no sense to the user. I fully understand that we must always keep the user experience in mind in any 404 and 301 redirect decisions. But to simplify the question, just suppose it is ok from a user perspective to map every old site pages to a page in new web site.

What to do with WordPress generated pages?
I'm an SEOmoz Newbie and have a very specific question about the auto generated WordPress Pages. SEOmoz caught and labeled the auto generated WP pages as Crawl Warnings like: Long URL - 302 - Title Element to Long - Missing Meta Description Tag - Too Many On-Page Links So I have learned the lesson and have now made those pages "no follow" / "no idex." HOWEVER, WHAT DO I DO WITH THE ONES THAT HAVE ALREADY BEEN INDEXED? Do I... 1. Just leave them as is a hope they don't hurt me from an SEO perspective? 2. Redirect them all to a relevant page? I'm sure many people have had this issue. What do you think? Thanks Dominic
