Display:None CSS & SEO

Hi
A while back I was told that using the display:none tag to hide content you want minimised is bad for onpage SEO - is this the case? It's not that we want to hide it from Google, we just don't want it taking up a huge amount of space on product pages.
I have found some of these on our site, and want to know how bad they are. Is the content under the tag going to be ignored?
Thank you

My reply is....
When we made a couple of pages that had text revealed with a click, those pages were really really big pages, with about 5000 words total. We just though that it would be easy for the visitor to make a short easy menu with the answers opening with a click. It was an experiment that I had no intentions of doing other places, because I believe that text behind a click is not seen by lots of people.
So, we tried it. Long tail traffic that was really valuable disappeared.
So, now, I put all of my text out in the open where everyone can immediately see it.
If I write text (and I write lots of it), I want it to be out there where everybody can see it. I want them to scroll down the page, see every bit of it, whistle and say "holy smoke".

I asked a similar question back in September and got a different response. Would you mind taking a look and commenting as i value your opinion. https://moz.com/community/q/display-none-read-more-implimentation

I completely agree with your approach. We're starting to get videos started, for me at the moment it's resource, so I'm trying to start writing and adding this content myself.
Great to hear that it's working for you! Gives me more motivation to keep pushing forward. Thanks:)

We publish all of this information on product pages. Many of our product pages have a short product description and a short article below explaining how to select, how to use, common maintenance. We often have a video down there. These pages rank well in the SERPs because they have generous amounts of unique, informative text, that might hold visitors. All of this info might help some customers to buy the product. At the same time it might discourage some customers who might have returned the product because they didn't have full information.

Hi
It is something I've seen discussed, but then I've seen people still doing it so I wasn't certain on the best approach.
It's quite difficult to display this content openly, on a product page/product listing page. Does anyone see a problem with displaying this content in full underneath product listings?
Thanks!

Yep, content that is opened with a click does not pull long tail traffic. It has been working that way for at least two years.
We had pages and thought that putting some details behind a click would improve the look of the pages. Yep, it did, then the traffic flow slowly dried up. Put that content back into the open and the traffic very slowly grew back.

I'm assuming your talking about content that's temporarily hidden until a users clicks on a tab or other element to reveal the content. A Google representative recently announced that this type of content is likely to get discounted as they prefer to rank sites on the content that's readily available / visible to the user. If you're depending on that "hidden" content to help you rank then it's not likely being given full credit if any at all. However if it's auxiliary content or specifications that might be considered duplicate across other sites or other pages it might not be a bad idea to keep this in place.
Here's a link to an article about this... https://www.seroundtable.com/google-hidden-tab-content-seo-19489.html

Gallery maintenance and the effect on SEO
Basically we get a lot of users uploading photos as part of their review, but many photos aren't moderated into our pages and therefore are never displayed. Things like selfies rather than photos of the product or just random google images that are completely unrelated to our products or services. Is there any benefit in cleaning up the gallery since some images we don't use are just sat there in admin?

when a page loads, would it be quicker if we had less content in the gallery? With our SEO hat on.
or does it not matter since it's not loading that content (photos) anyway?0 -
CDN for SEO (or not)?
Does CDN impact on SEO or not? There seems conflicting ideas as to whether they impact positively or negatively, I realise that if the page loads quicker this is a good thing for SEO and usability of course. Does Google see CDN as just cheating and a get-around for not doing the work from the ground up and using good hosting etc? Do you have any direct experience? All constructive input much appreciated!

In order not to lose anything in terms of SEO we are implementing Hashbangs + escaped fragment snapshots. Are there any other SEO considerations you think we should have and/or additional elements that we could add to the page to improve it in terms of SEO?0 -
Changing Servers + Effect on SEO
Hi, I am currently with a very slow server. Our website takes quite a while to load, FTP is very slow and content changes with Wordpress are slow because even the database connection takes a lot of time. However, my website ranks very well. Traffic has doubled in the last year. Our domain has been registered with this company for over 10 years. I am wondering if changing to a different hosting provider would have an effect on my rankings due to the change in IP.

Multiple stores & domains vs. One unified store (SEO pros / cons for E-Commerce)
Our company runs a number of individual online shops, specialised in particular products but all in the same genre of goods overall, with a specific and relevant domain name for each shop. At the moment the sites are separate, and not interlinked, i.e. Completely separate brands. An analogy could be something like clothing accessories (we are not in the clothing business): scarves.com, and silkties.com (our field is more niche than this) We are about to launch a related site, (e.g. handbags.com), in the same field again but without precisely overlapping products. We will produce this site on a newer, more flexible e-commerce platform, so now is a good time to consider whether we want to place all our sites together with one e-commerce system on the backend. Essentially, we need to know what the pros and cons would be of the various options facing us and how the SEO ranking is affected by the three possibilities. Option 1: continue with separate sites each with its own domains. Option 2: have multiple sites, each on their own domain, but on the same ecommerce system and visible linked together for the customer (with unified checkout) – on the top of each site could be a menu bar linking to each site: [Scarves.com] – [SilkTies.com] – [Handbags.com] The main question here is whether the multiple domains are mutually beneficial, particularly considerding how close to target keywords the individual domains are. If mutually benefitial, how does it compare to option 3: Option 3: Having recently acquired a domain name (e.g. accessories.com) which would cover the whole category together, we are presented with a third option: making one site selling all of these products in different categories. Our main concern here would be losing the ability to specifically target marketing, and losing the benefit of the domains with the key words in for what people are more likely to be searching for (e.g. 'silk tie') rather than 'accessories.' Is it worth taking the hit on losing these specific targeted domain names for the advantage of increased combined inbound links?

Is DOCTYPE important for SEO?
Hello fellow Mozzers. I am just having a brief look at a potential clients website before speaking to them tomorrow and whilst looking at the source I noticed that they don't appear to have a clear definition for their Doctype. All the have at the top of each page is I have to admit that Doctypes aren't my strong point but I know that they are normally slightly more descriptive than this. Can this have any effect on rankings? or is this just an issue for W3C validation? Thanks 🙂

Subdomains and SEO - Should we redirect to subfolder?
A new client has mainsite.com and a large numer of city specific sub domains i.e. albany.mainsite.com. I think that these subdomains would actually work better as subfolders i.e mainsite.com/albany rather than albany.mainsite.com. The majority of links on the subdomains link to the main site anyway i.e. mainsite.com/contactus rather than albany.mainsite.com/contactus. Having mostly main domain links on a subdomain doesnt seem like clever link architecture to me and maybe even spammy. Im not overly familiar with redirecting subdomains to subfolders. If we go the route of 301'ing subdomains to subfolders any advice/warnings?

SEO for Korea - Naver & Daum
Google and Yahoo have very little market penetration in the Korean markets. Instead, the popular search engines are Naver and Daum. Naver seems to like keeping traffic within its own network of sites. Does anyone have tips for what things might work to increase search visibility in Korea?
