Your thoughts on page navigation
-
Hi again SEOmoz community.
What are your thoughts on mainpage navigation. How it should be handled?
Scenario 1.
- links to the main sections with a mouse rollover feature where it shows subsections of the main sections
Scenario 2.
- links to the main sections, but the subsections are hidden and only visible on the click
Scenario 3.
- links to the main sections and subsections allways visible
I would like to hear you oppinions on this. What did you find as the best featrue, or did you try to find someting new entirely. What do you think would be the best scenario SEO wise and in the light of keeping links on page in decent numbers
Imo, Scenario 2 is the option to go with.
Tnx in advance for all your replys.
Sincerely,
sinisa

On my site I had 117 links with sub-navigation and external links, ended up being way way way too much.
There is another scenario too you could try that I was thinking of applying to my own site which is keep the navigation in place but put nofollows on the sub-navigation. I dont know the pros and cons this completely and maybe someone could say, but maybe you could use that so your link juice isnt diluted by minor pages and you direct your link building strategy to those pages that need it regardless of location.
In your situation though (and I'm a novice), I'd be looking at the number of links you have and how diverse your sites PA/DA and other metrics. High links and not very diverse PA/DA (or profile that doesnt suit your current strategy) and I'd hide them.
In mine, I have to try and get them to the site then I have to keep them there for as long as possible as it increases the likelihood they'll buy, so I turned off third level tertiary links so only primary and secondary links were present then watched the pages per visit and time on site.
It didnt end up changing much. Maybe if the site isnt that old or well established or you can afford to experiment, build the site with all links turned on or a primarily UX strategy. Record user interaction over a couple of weeks and then remove that extra level of navigation and add it as a side bar or something that is only shows each section not the whole site on each page.
Specifically on your question though you are asking about whether you should hide a menu or not, but Google doesnt care (correct me if wrong) about whether you can see it (it knows whether you can see it or not I think) its more its presence (they can tell its part of the navigation).
I like hidden menus with obvious points of entry as it gives a less cluttered feel. The only issue is mobile. But then you server up a media specific css file and turn the drop down menu in to a select statement and you solve that one.

Well both...
what would be the best scenario for Google and for users. Then maybe try to find some best-option-for-all...
-
Are you asking that in terms of how it would affect your ranking on Google et al, or how users would better interact with your site?

Keyword Appearing on Home Page - Moz Page Grader
Hi Today I entered www.partydomain.co.uk through the Moz Page Grader and found that the Home Page is Ranked B. I noticed that an Area we could improve on is the amount of times we are using our main keyword "Fancy Dress" on the home page. Please can you take a look at www.partydomain.co.uk and scroll to the bottom of the page were the tabs are containing losts of content. I am thinking about removing all of thoose Tabs. Our Competitors dont have any content as such on the home page and are ranking higher than Party Domain for "fancy dress" What do you think ? remove all the tabs to be like the others that rank better? Or cut the text right down ? Thanks Adam

Handling Deleted Pages
The backstory: My site has a fantasy sportsbook where users can place "bets" on pretty much anything. Each game has a unique matchup page, where the odds are displayed and any conversation about the game takes place. Example here. About 95% of the games are automatically graded, but I have to manually grade the rest. Therefore, as soon as every game starts I check to see if any users have made a pick on it, and if not I delete it because it reduces my workload. The problem: About 15% of my search-driven traffic is queries for games that no longer exist, which makes sense because nobody bets on the super obscure games and these games are very easy to rank for. I am currently redirecting them to my 404 page but I'm worried that all of these hits are hurting my reputation with the big G. Would it be better to noindex all of these pages at first and take the noindex away as soon as I'm positive that the game will stay?

URL for location pages
Hello all We would like to create clean, easy URLs for our large list of Location pages. If there are a few URLs for each of the pages, am I right when I'm saying we would like this to be the canonical? Right now we would like the URL to be: For example
On-Page Optimization | | Ferguson
Domain.com/locations/Columbus I have found some instances where there might be 2,3 or more locations in the same city, zip. My conclusion for these would be: adding their Branch id's on to the URL
Domain.com/locations/Columbus/0304 Is this an okay approach? We are unsure if the URL should have city,State, zip for SEO purposes?
The pages will have all of this info in it's content
BUT what would be best for SEO and ranking for a given location? Thank you for any info!0 -
Multiple silos/products/landing pages. How to design the root page for conversion?
Hi everyone, First post. Tried a few awkward searches on the topic but I must be using bad keywords. I'm re-designing a site that has multiple products and matching multiple audiences. This means we have multiple sillos for multiple groups of keywords with the supporting pages for each silo landing page. Currently I'm working on updating the look and text of those landing pages for each silo to increase conversion. This leaves me with the root web page. We get quite a lot of search traffic from people searching our brand name - so this results in clicks straight through to our root domain. There are no product specific landing pages because it could be any one of the 3-5 different personas we have hitting the site from that source. Does anyone have any good examples of where a site has had multiple products and needed to segregate their audience on a root top page? I'd like to see some examples and hear peoples thoughts. At the moment I'm thinking I need to fill that page up with trust factors as to why people should use us as a company, along with navigational elements in relation to each and every product so they can click through to the proper landing page. The main way I can see on executing that is to have a rotating banner with the same tag line "this is what we do" but be alternating between banners relating to each product.. with their own click through button to go to the respective landing page. Thoughts anyone? Example of sites doing this well?
