Best Metrics but Consistently Outranked
-
I am hoping someone could help us determine why we generally rank quite poorly compared to our competition, despite leading in every single Competitive Metric. We get outranked on a term where the Page Grade gives us an "A", and we best the competitor on each of the metrics. Where would those with more experience suggest we start looking?

**I was under the impression that the tools here were designed to help alleviate some of manual labor. **
In my opinion, the tools on Moz are best suited to monitoring your progress and giving you objective assessments. They are not going to move you up the SERPs.
Moving your site up the SERPs takes effort from the webmaster (or whoever is hired to do that work). That effort is all about making a better website. There is a lot of valuable information on Moz to guide you with that work. Most of that information is free.

It sounds like you are looking at a product page, where several different products or different types of products are displayed in a grid.
Those types of pages can be optimized for the query. That might be enough to raise their rankings in weak competition, but if you are in strong competition their overall rankings are usually determined more by the strength of the domain and its populartiy rather than by the optimization of the page.
I would work to produce great content about these products that is excellent enough that people will share it, link to it, talk about it in other parts of the web. If you can achive that, links from those content pages into the product grid pages can deliver traffic and transfer power that can help these grid product pages to higher rankings.
If these product pages have very little text now, higher rankings might be obtained from increasing the amount of text on them. However, on-page improvments will only have a major impact if you are up against easy competition. When you are in intense competition, those pages will either need to be on a powerful domain or have links or other off-site support to move them up the rankings. These can be dangerous to acquire because google is becoming better and better at identifying contrived links.

I understand. It seems like a newbie question, and while I am not an expert by any stretch, this is my 2nd time as a paying MOZ member, and I'm really hoping this time we are able to make some progress. My example is there is a specific keyword phrase that we are trying to rank well for, and our page grade is an A, We outrank on metrics. We are on the 4th page of Google for this keyword phrase. Our competition ranks one or two. We should rank on the 1st page based on our position in industry, age of domain, site quality, etc.
Exactly like those results at the top of the SERPS, we list a page of products, in a modern, responsive Magento grid. There are 4 products per row. We have a description of the category. There are many pages like this, and I am trying to figure out which tools in MOZ can help me find the issue. I have tried to see if we are suffering a penalty. Spam score of 1/17.
I sense a bit of frustration in your response in that I was too quick to ask for help, but I have spent time in the SERP's, and I'm just not coming up with much. This is a site-wide issue. Generally poor ranking against competitors, with very little obvious difference in the quality of our site or results.
Is that the best it gets? Look at SERPS and metrics over and over? I was under the impression that the tools here were designed to help alleviate some of manual labor.

** Where would those with more experience suggest we start looking?**
Honestly, I would stop looking at metrics and start looking at ways to make your website better answer the query and better deliver what your visitors are seeking.
The metrics give no information on how to improve your rankings. They are simply a guess at where you would rank using data that is different from what google uses. Sometimes a good guess, sometimes a bad guess. Go out in the SERPs and look at the rankings and look at the metrics. Do that over and over. Make up your own mind how good they are at predicting rankings. Watch Q&A and see how many people come in here asking the same question that you asked.
If you want to improve your rankings, begin by looking at your title tag, be sure it is description of your page and what your visitor really wants for that query. Then look at your page and see if it delivers excellent information to answer the query - and lives up to your title tag. If it is not the best at answering the query - clearly, completely, easy to understand, and well-illustrated, then put your work into that job.
You probably know better what answers the query than any information that metrics will provide.
After that, some things will be beyond your control. A big popular site like amazon or wikipedia is going to win all ties, all close races and a lot that you will never understand.
If you have a small or a newer site that has not become popular, then time and promotion will be needed to become competitive with similar-quality content on stronger, more established and popular domains.

Best method for tracking true keyword ranking overtime?
It seems as though week to week ranking monitoring can be very volatile, and comparing over the course of a month only takes into account the absolute change and not whether the rank has been jumping up and down in the 3 weeks between. What is a good method (Moz tool or not) for tracking a true change in average rank?

Open site explorer, why are my social media metrics incorrect?
In open site explorer the Facebook and twitter stats are very low in correlation to what we think it should be. Twitter - 129 Total tweets and retweets of this URL since March 2010, including tweets of the URL with unique parameters added. We tweet our URL and people retweet our url several times a day, why is this figure so low? Facebook - 268 shares, 133 likes. Our Facebook page has 16,767 likes · 1,373 talking about this. Surely this figure should be higher? Could it be that its not linked to our site properly some how? im unsure, can any one shed any light on this please?

What's my best strategy for Duplicate Content if only www pages are indexed?
The MOZ crawl report for my site shows duplicate content with both www and non-www pages on the site. (Only the www are indexed by Google, however.) Do I still need to use a 301 redirect - even if the non-www are not indexed? Is rel=canonical less preferable, as usual? Facts: the site is built using asp.net the homepage has multiple versions which use 'meta refresh' tags to point to 'default.asp'. most links already point to www Current Strategy: set the preferred domain to 'www' in Google's Webmaster Tools. set the Wordpress blog (which sits in a /blog subdirectory) with rel="canonical" to point to the www version. Ask programmer to add 301 redirects from the non-www pages to the www pages. Ask programmer to use 301 redirects as opposed to meta refresh tags & point all homepage versions to www.site.org. Does this strategy make the most sense? (Especially considering the non-indexed but existent non-www pages.) Thanks!!

What's the best way for SEO newbie to analyze & fix a site after being hit by Panda?
Hi, I have a prospective client who was in the top 3 on Google for two of their primary keywords. They fell way back in the rankings immediately after Panda was rolled out on September 27, 2012. Two weeks ago, they were at position #118 for one keyword. After looking for them in Rank Checker today, they cannot be found in Google at all. Here's my question. Because of the "bad links" (some pointing to Porno sites)... what's the possibility that this situation cannot be fixed? I don't know... maybe I'm asking an irrelevant question. I'm attempting to assess the situation so I can go back and present my findings to the prospective client. I'm committed to understanding what's going on with their website so I can assess the situation properly. Fixing their problem starts with a correct assessment. They have a ranking problem, and I know I can fix that... IF all their site needs is white hat <acronym title="Search Engine Optimization">SEO</acronym>. What I DON'T want is... to sell them <acronym title="Search Engine Optimization">SEO</acronym> services, only to find out in 3-6 months... I made an incorrect diagnosis of the problem, and therefore sold them the wrong solution. I know I can close the sale if I can show them with reasonable substantiation that the damage is not beyond repair. I'm familiar with the basics of <acronym title="Search Engine Optimization">SEO</acronym>, but I'm unfamiliar with how "bad linking" might effect the long-term commitment to optimizing. They're wondering if they should start over on another website. I was attempting to do an assessment to better understand if my typical approach on this site would be sufficient. Also... I wanted to get an assessment/report to show them something to substantiate my conclusion(s) about their website. If Open Site Explorer is sufficient to do the link analysis... great. At least I know I'm working with the right tool. All I have to do is learn how to use the tool quickly. At this point... I'm not sure which tool would be helpful. So... can you speak to the following 2 questions: 1.) How do you know when ranking problem is beyond fixing? 2.) What software/tool is ideal for doing some link analysis in order to assess the problem, and prescribe a solution? Thanks so much! Ramon

What is the best ranking checker solution for 100's of sites
Hello, We used IBP for over 2 years and it worked great. We were able to schedule every clients site to auto run and email our clients. Now IBP is terrible due to Google's new updates. We are looking for something cost effective since we have 100's of websites we check on a weekly basis. We are either looking for a great software that uses proxies to check, or a service that offers unlimited sites and is cheap per month. We have searched for many, however there are so many that we aren't sure what is good and what isn't. We tried Jonathan Ledgers new one and it's not good, we looked into Web CEO and it's per amount of websites which is expensive. We tried cute rank tracker which is free and added proxies and it doesn't work, it lags out and doesn't even track ranks properly. It wouldn't hurt if it had a built in report analysis of the website as well. So whats a good one?

Why are there so few Best Answers?
Why do so many great responses in this forum never get labeled as the "Best Answer". Questioners should realize that many experts give them great advice for free and the least they can do is to show some sort of appreciation by giving a thumbs up.

Best way to use OSE Advanced Reports (Repost after Q&A issues)
I can see that Open Site Explorer's Advanced Reports feature is very powerful in terms of sifting through large amounts of link data, but does anyone have any useful tips on how to get the most out it? I want to use my 5 reports a month, but I want to make to maker sure I'm making the most of that allowance.

Why can't we access metrics in the API that are available in the mozbar?
For example, the Chrome/Firefox mozbar uses peid (Root Domain External Links) but the api doesn't allow this. I've done a little bit of reverse engeniering and it looks like the accessID for the mozbar (when logged in as a pro member) is "pro-xxxx". Does this mean that each pro account has its own accessid/secret key? If so, when will pro members have access to that? I've created a tool that I use for deciding which expired domains to buy and it uses all of the free metrics - but I find myself having to do one extra step to get the peid (navigating to ose). It doesn't make much sense that the metric is available to me when I'm using the mozbar logged in as a pro member (which I pay for), but not apart of the API.
