Tons of Links from Low-Quality Image Directories?
-
Hi Mozzers, I've been receiving a ton of links from low-quality websites that look like image directories or search engines? They are displaying the images that are hosted on our own website. They all seem very similar.
Has anyone experienced this and are these harmful? Should they be left alone or disavowed or..?
Here are a few examples:
etc.
Thanks in advance!

Nailed it!

Hi SylviaH,
I have never had any such issues before. However, I do have experience with bad links neighborhood and know how painful it can get when low quality sites start to link.
Don't ignore these links as they will cause harm to the website later on.
I would recommend that you get rid of these links, either these webmasters remove the links or your disavow them.

I have lots of images on my websites that are popular in Google image search. These images are often grabbed by "image directory" sites. The goal of many of these image directory sites is to display your image, or simply link to it, and hope that it gets picked up by image search, which will then result in their site getting attribution for the image and traffic referrals from image search.
We don't allow other sites to use our images, have them marked clearly with copyright, and have cautions about unauthorized use on our own website. So, if our image on their website appears in Google image search, we submit a DMCA complaint to google and a copyright violation complaint to adsense. This usually gets the image kicked out of image search and the adsense ads turned off on the offending page.
We submit DMCAs weekly or even daily if there are a lot of active infringers. Caution.... don't submit DMCAs or complain to adsense unless you are certain that they are not making a fair use of your image.

Hotlinking can't be stopped with .htaccess. Because users will see "hotling warning" but bots will still see link.
Since i have exactly same issue with mine images - i disavow them w/o any doubt. This is low quality directory with all images based on some keywords like "aztec". They scrape SERP for images, get top 100 and make "website". No, no please, no.
That's why disavow them ASAP.

Thanks for your response, Malika.
After some more research, it turns out that all these image websites are hotlinking our images. I'm not entirely sure what the point of them doing that is. It looks like most of these sites don't have a contact form even. I'm curious if you have any of these image websites hotlinking to your website?
I found a few threads in the google forums with other people experiencing these issues. Although no one has really talked much about disavowing other than trying to stop them from hotlinking from htaccess.
Not entirely sure if that is the route to go, just disavow, or ignore.

I don't think there is any value in these websites so it would be a good idea to get rid of them to keep your backlink profile clean.
If the images on your website were not intended to be shared then you can get in touch with these websites and request them to remove the link. I usually take these steps in the whole of getting rid of links from bad neighborhood -
- Request the webmaster to remove the links
- Follow up with them. Usually, the webmasters are busy and dont respond to your first email or forget about taking the links off etc.
- From my experience (only directory sites), these webmasters sometimes come back saying that they can do it but will charge some money - 5,10, 20 bucks. You dont have to pay at all. Simply send them an email that it's fine, you will go ahead and disavow their website if they dont remove it themselves. Some webmasters will remove the link and send you an email confirming that.
- For the webmasters that never got back to you, simply disavow their website.
What I would suggest you to do is that if there are a lot of such websites linking to your site then you should try to understand as to why they are linking to you. This could save you a lot of time in future. It could be just one website triggering the whole issue.
While trying to figure out the root cause, you can start with the process of contacting these webmasters.
If the contact details are not obvious on the website then you can check their whois information.

GWT Lists URLs with links to my site, but those URLs don't have links to my site
There are a number of URLs that show up for my website in Webmaster Tools as having links to my site when in fact they don't. I know this to be a fact because I actually wrote some of the sites that Google is saying are linking to my site and I know there isn't any links on the specific pages to that site. For example, the site in question is: https://www.liftproducts.com/ As an example, Google is saying that about 100 URLs from https://www.lift-tables.net/ are linking to it when, I'm fairly confident that there is only 1 link to it found here: https://www.lift-tables.net/info.php?countrytabs=3 Yet Google says links exist on this (and many more) page: https://www.lift-tables.net/liftproducts/max-lift/lpt4w-030-48.php I thought at first it might have been due to linking to a image file directly instead of locally hosting it, but after checking the source, that's not the case. I am also seeing this type of non-linking being reported on sites I have no clue what they are. For example, some Spanish site about tandem bicycles is being listed as linking to liftproducts.com: http://206-225-85-34.dedicated.abac.net/tandem/inc Yet I can find no evidence of an actual link existing. Am I missing something here? Any insight of why this is happening and how I can clean up my link signature would be appreciated.

Indirect Link Earning via dofollow Links In News Articles
Hello, MOZ SEO Gurus. I've been trying to think some deep thoughts on safe, effective link earning for news publishing sites, and wanted to run this up the flagpole and see if you salute. Our site is a biotech news service -- we pump out copious amounts of news content each day, which works well for driving traffic. That being said, we also want to rank some optimized landing pages as well. Take, for example, this page, which we'd like to rank for "secondary progressive MS" and related keywords: http://bionews-tx.com/secondary-progressive-ms/ Now, as far as I'm concerned, shopping this page around to MS influencers isn't easy. I can go to Foundational websites, blogs, etc., and say, "hey, we have this info page on SPMS, and I thought that you might find it helpful/want to link to it." But chances are, the MS influencers already have their own proprietary content on SPMS, and there isn't much value to linking to it. Therefore, I think that we'll get few link earning conversions on the effort. However, what if I take our Secondary Progressive MS landing page, and I link to it in a corresponding article about SPMS research, as I did here: http://bionews-tx.com/news/2014/01/30/secondary-progressive-ms-natalizumab-clinical-trial/ Then, I go to the drug developer who is at the center of this story and say to them, "hey, we recently covered your drug in the news, and I thought you might want to link to it." Then, we get a link from an MS drug developer to the news article, which in turn has a prominent anchor text, dofollow internal link to the landing page for SPMS. If the link from the drug developer is dofollow, then we flow page rank juice from the drug developer page to our news page to our landing page. To me, it's much easier to earn safe links this way than to try and shop the landing page itself. That being said, if we get a dofollow link on the news piece, we only get a diminished portion of page rank going to the landing page. Is this strategy viable? Is the indirect flow of page rank from a linking site to a news article to a landing page even worth it? I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

Gained my first quality link, was it worth 2 hours of work?
Hello,
Link Building | | wppseo
I'm a newbie. I'm building a brand new site. In a niche service business, worldwide.
Today I gained my first link, I tried to reach to the highest qualify link I could identify.
I'd like to know if you think my two hours effort was worthy, or laughable. Because I can gain other 3 or 4 links from other domains working like that. I tell you where is my first link: the top domain is in the same niche business, DA 79
My link is in a subdomain page (always in the same niche business) that has: 20 other links (mine is the only external dofollow) Domain Authority 79 /100 Page Authority 31 /100 Page Link Metrics Just-Discovered 79 in 32 Days Established Links 1 Root Domain 4 Total Links the homepage of the subdomain has Page Authority of 66 /100 Page Social Metrics 0 0 0 0 0 I'd appreciate any feedback.0 -
Directories and Bookmarking
Our company has a wide range of linking strategies. Currently, our SEO team members are linking to directories more than anything else. Are there any advantage to this or should they put there effort elsewhere? My views on directories: these links are easy to acquire and offer little push to our SEO efforts. It appears that Google is no longer taking directories in consideration and essentially they could be hurting our rankings. What should our company do; should we stop linking to directories all together or keep it to a minimum. Also isn't bookmarking on the same lines as directories? What is the best way to handle this?

Link Targets
What do you think of getting links from... high quality sites, with many non spammy high trusted links to them....but their traffic has been majorly hit by panda. I suspect perhaps for having too many thin pages. Is persuing links on these sites a good idea or not? I'd welcome opinions.

Blog traffic / link ratio? (Esimated of how much traffic will result in a link)
Hi, Was wondering if people could please tell me some estimates of how much traffic is likely to gain links to a blog post? For example 1,000 hits = 1 link, Hence 10,000 hits = 10 links to a blog post? I understand there is no magic ratio I just want to know what people have achieved. I’m after averages not just a one off really successful blog post too. Please specify the topic you achieve this in e.g. SEO, photography, business, heath... etc.

Reciprocal links
Hi SEOmoz Pros, We have vendors from whom I was hoping to get links. To make it more enticing to them I was planning to select a small number of vendors (with good site metrics-PA, DA, PR) and create a "Featured Vendor" module on some pages that would link back to the vendor's site as well--thereby created reciprocal links. I was planning to only have one vendor to a page and only for the pages that we are targeting locally. My hope is to help boost the ranking of those pages. Is it okay to offer our vendors to link back to their site or should I ask for a one-way link back to our page and pitch it as exposure for their brand?? Lastly, does Google penalize for these types of links? Thanks!
