One Main Brand Domain - One EMD which Ranks Better
-
Hello SEO MOZers!
We have one one main ecommerce site and I have just discovered we have an EMD sitting on a .co.uk, for one of our premium product ranges, and it actually outranks our main website. It appears on page one.
My question is how do I handle the EMD? I don't want to start building authority to this site, as we are currently developing the main brand site, however I can't ignore that it is ranking.
There is relatively little content. There are links on the page (it's only one page) that go through to the product section on the main site. But should I 301 redirect it?
What would be your advise? I want to capitalise on any traffic we could benefit from, and ultimately I want the main site to rank better for this product's keywords.
Any help would much appreciated.

Hi Robert,
Thank you very much for the detailed reply. The main website is also based in the UK but I'm not sure about the DNS which I will check. If they are on the same DNS, are you saying that redirecting the EMD to the main brand website would contravene Google best practice and we shouldn't do it?
We have a full section for this product range on the main site so it means that there is a viable target for the 301. I just feel like we should be building up this section on the main site and making that better, rather than focusing on the other one, but unfortunately because it ranks so well (I thought Google stopped ranking websites just for the EMD), I need to do something with it!
Thank you for your advise so far. I'm really grateful to you.

Hi Carla,
A couple of questions to consider:
- Is the main site also operating in the UK?
If not you probably don't want to link them as there is lost relevancy unless your e-commerce service area includes the UK and wherever your main domain is targeting.
If they are both in the UK, you are good on this.
- Are the sites both hosted on the same DNS?
If so, you are risking a red flag from Google. 1 or 2 links this way won't hurt, but over time you are leaving footprints which run against Google's best practices and you are risking penalization.
- Do the main site have a page that would be a viable 301 redirect target from the UK site?
If so, you are in pretty good shape and I would consider the redirect. You will be losing some link juice in the process, but traffic will be coming to the site you prefer.
- Just how serious do you want to get about your technical SEO?
EMD's are not the be-all and end-all of SEO. In fact, if I were you, I might be looking at a way to improve the content on the .co.uk site before conducting the 301 redirect in order to boost its rankability as much as possible to give my main site as much of a boost as possible. It's all about how much you have to dedicate to it in terms of resources.
Hope these questions and answers have helped to give you some perspective into how to handle your situation. Let me know if there's anything else I can do to help!
Cheers,
Rob

Strange ranking occurrences in Google (NL)
Mozzers, I got a question for all of you. Recently (about 3 months ago) I launched a renewed website for a costumer of mine. Since then rankings have been improving and some decreasing a little but overall it went quite allright. _Still, we now have some issues with some new pages and I really don't know what to do any more. _ The Case:

For starters lets say the company sells vacuum cleaners. We now make pages for specific product ranges e.g. Miele Diamond vacuum cleaners which in turn tells something about this product range and has links to different pages of that series, for instance the Miele Black Diamond Silent Vacuum Cleaner. Why did we do this? We already ranked for specific product pages but also wanted to rank for more general terms and thus product ranges. What happened? We now rank perfectly well for the product pages itself but for some reason the Miele Diamond Vacuum Cleaners page doesn't rank at all or not as it should. Why is this strange? Because we applied the exact same tactic for some other product ranges on the same website and it worked like a charm (part of the reason why we started to do this for all product-ranges). I could really use some help here. If you want I can message you the pagelink in PM but I won't post it here for several reasons. The Vacuum Cleaners in this example or not the real products though but used as an exemplar. I really do hope to hear from you with some advice or request for more information. Regards

Page Rank drop from 4 to ?
Our site (ecommerce) has been around since 1998. The pagerank has gone from a 4 to a ? The Moz score is still good, but traffic is way down. Never got a warning from Google, and were never part of a BH linking scheme? I'm puzzled? There are some duplicate content issues and missing meta tags, but they were on customer login pages that we have since blocked? Thanks

Ranking Fluctuations
I need your help. My rankings have been on a wild roller coaster ride since I started optimizing the site with standard on page optimization changes. (No keyword stuffing or over-optimization...) I have only made positive changes for the content on the page; I created unique descriptions for every product. I redirected some urls that weren’t readable into a more user- friendly format. I am only doing completely organic link building, really. Yet for some weird reason the rankings initially rose and then steeply fell and ever since have went back up to the top and right back to not in the top 50 results. Just to give you an example this is a graph of one of our main keywords: https://www.diigo.com/item/image/3vpdp/gd2q This is another keyword that we admittedly never were in the top 5 results but usually we were in the top 20. Check out the wild fluctuations. If it wasn't the main keyword we were going after, I would probably laugh. https://www.diigo.com/item/image/3vpdp/rcy9 I asked an expert he said he think it might be from a major issue with internal competition. The keywords that seem to fluctuate the most, have numerous landing pages that compete for the same keyword. Since we sell the same object in many many different sizes, thicknesses and colors it only makes sense that we have the same keyword on many pages. I would love someone that is an expert in this area to have a look at the site and give actionable advice so I can stop the craziness. Do you have any suggestions? Do you have anyone that you’d refer for this type of job/consulting?

Subdomain vs. Root Domain design
I know that there are penalties if you have a navigation item in your categories that links to another site (root domain) that yields the same design as the original link. Is there any negative SEO implications with having a subdomain with the same design as the root domain i.e. root.com vs. store.root.com And the navigation functionality within will have links to both store.root.com as well as root.com directories? Thanks in advance.

Main page deindexed by google.
3 days ago our main page('/') has stopped appear in google results. Rest of pages works fine. Even our main page from canadian version of site with similar content works fine. Some times canadian page appears for key word where we had our com version before. But I think this is just result of disappearing com version. Any suggestion were to look? Messages box in google webmastertools is empty. Could this be the question too long page title? PS: Does any way exist to check if we were punished by Google and reason of this? For Bing and Yahoo everything works fine. PPS: We have just found that "cache:our_site.com" and "info:our_site.com" returns in google our_site.ca. So this should be reason of problem. So now we are looking how to fix this.

AB Testing - Organic Rank
Hello, Currently We are running an A/B test on a few pages, the footer and the header on our site. I was wondering what is the proper way to do an a/b test so that our google rankings won’t fall and that Google will only index one version at this time? Thanks
