Can you use multiple videos without sacrificing load times?
-
We're using a lot of videos on our new website (www.4com.co.uk), but our immediate discovery has been that this has a negative impact on load times. We use a third party (Vidyard) to host our videos but we also tried YouTube and didn't see any difference.
I was wondering if there's a way of using multiple videos without seeing this load speed issue or whether we just need to go with a different approach.
Thanks all, appreciate any guidance!
Matt

Thank you very much for that, my guys are having a look into both Wistia and also if/how we can defer videos using either Vidyard or YouTube.
Thanks again,
Matt

I use Wistia as well and recommend them I do not recommend using their plug-in
You can defer loading of the video and make it so that the site very quickly and is almost not affected at all.

How to defer videos
To do this we need to markup our embed code and add a small and extremely simple javascript. I will show the method I actually used for this page.
The html
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="" data-src="//www.youtube.com/embed/OMOVFvcNfvE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe>
In the above code I took the embed video code from Youtube and made two small changes. The first change is that I made the "src" empty by removing the url from it as below.
src=""
The second change I made is I put the url I cut from "src" and added it to "data-src".
data-src="//www.youtube.com/embed/OMOVFvcNfvE"
The javascript
Script to call external javascript file
This code should be placed in your HTML just before the tag (near the bottom of your HTML file). So "**defer.js" is **the name of the external JS file.
I hope this helps, Tom

I'm very doubtful hosting the video off-site would have much effect on the site speed especially YouTube, Personally I use Wistia mainly due to the level of analytics that they provide. The only time this may be an issue if you have a quantity on a single page, in that case I would try and split it onto several different pages by means of categories or something.
To me it sounds like there may be a programming problem.
The other thing is it may not be the videos that is slowing the site down.
Just a few thoughts don't know if it helps.

Can an external firewall affect rankings?
For security reasons we are now routing traffic through an external firewall cum CDN. Our server and domain IPs remain the same, but any request is routed through an external IP, which then forwards the traffic. Would our rankings be affected because of IP changes? Thanks Sam

Canonical homepage link uses trailing slash while default homepage uses no trailing slash, will this be an issue?
Hello, 1st off, let me explain my client in this case uses BigCommerce, and I don't have access to the backend like most other situations. So I have to rely on BG to handle certain issues. I'm curious if there is much of a difference using domain.com/ as the canonical url while BG currently is redirecting our domain to domain.com. I've been using domain.com/ consistently for the last 6 months, and since we switches stores on Friday, this issue has popped up and has me a bit worried that we'll loose somehow via link juice or overall indexing since this could confuse crawlers. Now some say that the domain url is fine using / or not, as per - https://moz.com/community/q/trailing-slash-and-rel-canonical But I also wanted to see what you all felt about this. What says you?

Can I use a 410'd page again at a later time?
I have old pages on my site that I want to 410 so they are totally removed, but later down the road if I want to utilize that URL again, can I just remove the 410 error code and put new content on that page and have it indexed again?

Can I remove 301 redirects after some time?
Hello, We have an very large number of 301 redirects on our site and would like to find a way to remove some of them. Is there a time frame after which Google does not need a 301 any more? For example if A is 301 redirected to B, does Google know after a while not to serve A any more, and replaces any requests for A with B? How about any links that go to A? Or: Is the only option to have all links that pointed to A point to B and then the 301 can be removed after some time? Thank you for you you help!

Effective use of hReview
Hi fellow Mozzers! I am just in the process of adding various reviews to our site (a design agency), but I wanted to use the ratings in different ways depending on the page. So for the home page and the services (branding, POS, direct mail etc) I wanted to aggregate relevant reviews (giving us an average of all reviews for the home page, an average of ratings from all brand projects and so on). Then, I wanted to put specific reviews on our portfolio pages, so the review relates specifically to that project. This is the easiest to do as the hReview generator is geared up for reviews that come from one source, but I can't find a way of aggregating the star ratings to make an average rating rich snippet. Anyone know where I can get the coding for this? Thanks in advance! Nick.

Can you mark up a page using Schema.org and Facebook Open Graph?
Is it possible to use both Schema.org and Facebook Open Graph for structured data markup? On the Google Webmaster Central blog, they say, "you should avoid mixing the formats together on the same web page, as this can confuse our parsers."
