Redirects Being Removed...
-
Hi
We have a team in France who deal with the backend of the site, only problem is it's not always SEO friendly.
I have lots of 404's showing in webmaster tools and I know some of them have previously had redirects.
If we update a URL on the site, any links pointing to it on the website are updated straight away to point to the most up to date URL - so the user doesn't have to go through a redirect.
However, the team would see this as the redirect not being 'used' after about 30 days and remove it from the database - so this URL no longer has any redirects pointing to it.
My question is, surely this is bad for SEO? However I'm a little unsure as they aren't actually going through the redirect. But somewhere in cyber space the authority of this page must drop?
Any advice is welcome

Hi
Yes I agree, to be honest most of our product pages won't have many backlinks, if any so I still want the 301 included on the pages which don't.
Thanks

Hey Becky,
quick note here, I may not be understanding correctly but I see one thing omitted. While I agree that in the long run you'll need the 301 ony from pages which receives links from outside in order to keep the SEO juice flowing into your website, I think you should also apply 301 to pages which doesn't, just because need to understand that when one page returns a 404 which is the one you want to be indexed instead of it, (if you have one). This will make the transition process easier for google to digest.

Yes. But its easy to fix imo. Create a page and set error in htacces file for example. Pretty fast to complete it.

Thanks
Do you see it as a problem if there is not a dedicated 404 page which all old pages are redirected to?
-
Unfortunately not but there's api so dev could use it (I guess to write a script) )and check in batch. However if type your domain there "domain.com", and will go to pages, then you'll see pages list. Upload only those giving error (404).
Next steps I recommend:
-
If something has trustflow more than 0 and/or linking domains more than 1 - check where you can redirect it: if there's adequate page - to this page; if there's nothing good to redirect it to - to homepage
-
If rest got 0 trustflow/citation and 0 linking domains - redirect to one 404 page created by you or your dev with one url: domain.com/404 (for example).
For your example:
- do you have good page for it with same/very similar content? Yes? Redirect to this page. No? Redirect to homepage because of citationflow bigger than 0.

Thank you for the reply.
Is there a quick way to input these URLs into majestic so I can check all 1700 quickly?
IS it better to redirect old pages to a dedicated 404 page? This is an example of one of ours
-
Hi Becky
-
Check if those "404s" got any links/link juice/seo metrics - for example with majestic.com
-
If some of them have links - redirect to proper pages or homepage if you don't have a good page for something. And keep them. Used or not.
-
If the rest got 0 links, no seo metrics - set one 404 page and redirect ALL the rest 404s to this page (via htaccess for example). This page can be domain.com/404 with nice explanation about oops something went wrong etc.
-
Good would be forcing to reindex those 404 pages with some software or indexing service. Google will get it pretty fast.
Yes, it's bad especially if pages giving 404 but not redirected got some links and some seo metrics like trustflow.

301 redirect with DNS?
Quick question. Is it possible to 301 redirect a non-www to www. (properly in terms of SEO) with DNS (C Name, A name, or other) ..have searched around and found conflicting information. Would like to know a definite answer. I usually implement all 301 redirects with htaccess. However have a client situation where we only have access to the CMS, but which does have DNS settings. thanks in advance, Greg

Penguin and 301 redirects...
Hi, I have several questions about starting a new domain due to Penguin. The site is: http://bajajlaw.com. Quick backstory: This site was hit every time Penguin rolled out. No clean-up was done until October 2015. At that time, I took over the project. My efforts include: (1) Remove'em, (2) manual removal, (3) and the Disavow Tool. The HP went from being at around #50 for the target KW (San Diego criminal defense attorney) to about #25. Never really moved higher than that. However, I redid the content for the internal pages (DV, Theft Crimes, etc.) and they are all ranking fairly well (first page or top of 2nd). In short, the penalty only seems to affect the HP, not the internal pages. Instead of waiting for Penguin to roll-out, client wants to move forward with new domain. My questions are as follow: 1. Can I use the same content for the internal pages and 301 from the old internal pages to the new? 2. Should I 301 from the old to the new domain for the HP, or not? 3. If I do a 301 from an internal page to a new internal page, does that have the same effect of doing a 301 from the old HP to the new HP? I have read various opinions on this topic. I'd appreciate feedback from anyone who has experience doing this sort of thing. Thanks. P.s. I'm inclined to wait for P4 to rollout, but given that nobody seems to know when that might be, it's hard for me to advise client to keep waiting for it.

Hundreds of 301 Redirects. Remove Pages or Not?
Hi Mozers, I have a website that has literally got hundreds of 301 redirects. I had a close look at these URLs and only some of them have backlinks to it and remaining all of them are not indexing in Google and has got not backlinks at all. Based on what I have noticed experts mentioning, loads of 301 redirects can potentially slow down the site speed. In a case like the website I have, should I completely take off the pages from website to reduce the number of 301 redirects or should I leave 301 redirects? There is no traffic or backlinks coming from these URLs. Malika

For how long does Google honor a 302 redirect?
Greetings! I would love some recent experiences to support our experience which is +/- 1 year old on this question. Based on our experiences around a year ago, I believe that Google will only honor a 302 temporary redirect for a relatively short period - perhaps up to a month - and then it will begin treating the redirect as a 301 redirect and will remove the old page from the index. Have others seen this? Is there an update on what the max "safe" period to have a 302 in place could be? We have a domain that is soon to experience about 3 months of "downtime" with no content on it, but the content will be back after that time. Ideally we would 302 redirect the pages elsewhere just for that downtime period. However, I don't want to do a 302 redirect if there is a risk that the pages will lose all of their accumulated authority and indexing. Basically, is there any safe way to just put the domain on ice for a few months? Please share recent experience only. Thanks for your insights!

Trailing Slash: Lost in Redirection?
Question here, but first the lead in. As you all know, 301 redirects don't pass on 100% of link juice. I've set up my site using htaccess to redirect all non-ww to www and redirect all URLs to have a trailing slash. FYI, the preferred domain is selected in WMT and canonical URLs appear in the head section of all pages. So now what happens when sites that link to mine don't include either the www or the trailing slash, which is actually quite common? Of course, asking the site own to correct the link is ideal, but that's not always possible. So if thousands of links on external sites are linking to http://www.site.com instead of http://www.site.com/, won't lots of link juice get lost in redirection? I can't think of anything more I can do to the URLs to reduce duplicate content and juice dilution. Thoughts? Kevin

Redirects Going to the Wrong Place
I just checked our rankings for a few of our top keywords from a previously merged domain, and we are not anywhere on the first page (we used to rank #1). I then manually typed in the url of a top product we sell from our old site that was merged into the new site. It turns out that the redirect isn't going to the right place at all (which probably explains why the page isn't ranking). Here is part of the code from our htaccess file: RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^neuroformulas.com$ [OR]
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | vitasouthmktg
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.neuroformulas.com$
RewriteRule ^/?$ "http://www.vitasouth.com/brands/NeuroScience.html" [R=301,L] ErrorDocument 404 /404.html redirect 301 /products/Kavinace.html http://www.vitasouth.com/products/NeuroScience-Kavinace.html The bottom redirect (http://www.neuroformulas.com/products/Kavinace.html) should be going to the url specified. Instead, it goes to http://www.vitasouth.com/NeuroScience.html/Kavinace.html (NOT A VALID URL!). Please help! Thanks! -Matt0
