How to create goal for Events?
-
Hi All,
I have created event via google tag manager for my ecommerce site. That events are button clicks. Now I want to know after clicking that event does that customer reached to Thank You Page or not? How can I do that? which type of goal I have to create?
Thanks!

Hey Pragnesh,
It seems you have a few questions here, I'm going to recap to ensure we touched base on them all & try to get you sorted out.
Questions
- Does a customer reach a thank-you page if you have event tracking in place?
- How can you get them to go to thank-you page?
- What type of goal is needed to track this in Google Analytics
- How to know when events are happening?
Answers
- A customer isn't redirected because event tracking was added, unless the button's onclick is a window location change, which requires javascript to redirect them. I would encourage you to make a link (href) and style it to look like a button. Great example here.
- The above example will show you how to make a button-click a link that can go to a thank-you page.
- If you're wanting to track the event as a goal in Google Analytics (GA), then you'll need to grab the following values (Category, Action, Label, Value) that you have used to create the event (not all are required) and create a new goal in GA with the 'Event' goal type. You can then verify the goal to ensure the tracking is setup correctly.
- If you setup the above goal, then you can track the event as a goal, if not you can see ALL events in the events report of GA. Behavior>Events>Overview. You should be able to drill down there and see all goals that are taking place. This is a good source for double checking the Category, Action, Label, Value fields for the goal to be created in step 3.
I think that should get you sorted, if you're still having issues let me know and I'll help you out further!
Let me know if this works for your issue!

Hi Pragnesh,
It'll require a bit of work on your part, but you can go to your GA and select your "Thank You" page to see what kind of traffic it has received (since people aren't likely to navigate to it directly, there are good odds only people who converted will be represented here). Compare that to the number of goal conversions you have tracked and that should tell you what you need to know.
If your event tracking is set up properly, you will know that your customers are coming through because only those who click through will be represented as goal conversions. If you are not increasing your goal conversions, it means that:
- Either your tracking isn't set up properly
OR
- No one is clicking through
Check the traffic volume of your "Thank You" page to figure out which it is - if people are getting to that page, but your conversions aren't increasing, then you know tracking isn't set up properly.
Hope that answers your question.
Cheers,
Rob

Hi Pragnesh,
In terms of creating goals, there are multiple options.
First, there is a misconception that you need to create a "thank-you" page in order to track goals. There's a pretty neat way to get around this by adding some code to your submit buttons. Raven Tools has a pretty sweet tool that provides your with a plug-and-play version:
https://raventools.com/marketing-reports/google-analytics/event-tracking/contact-form/
Or you can use the Contact Form 7 plugin (there are other options) which allows you to set up this code automatically:
http://contactform7.com/tracking-form-submissions-with-google-analytics/
However, if you are determined to go ahead with a Thank You page, you can find how to take care of that here:
http://www.brightervision.com/thank-you-page/
Simpy put, follow these steps:
- In GA, go to "Admin"
- Go to "Goals" (right column, 3 rows down)
- Click "+New Goal"
- Click "Custom" in 1st section
- Click "Destination" in 2nd section
- Type in URL addition (only the part that comes after your domain)
i.e. if your domain is www.example.com and your thank-you page is www.example.com/thank-you, then you would enter "/thank-you" into this section.
After that you just have to make sure that your submission forms are redirecting visitors to your Thank You page and you're all set.
Hope this helps, feel free to reach out if you have any further questions or need clarification.
Cheers,
Rob

Is it possible to have a GA event and a GA virtual pageview fire off of the same click?
If we can only choose one, we'll likely go with the Event, but I'm hoping we'll be able to do both and gather more data about when certain pages (even if they are virtual) are viewed in the path to conversion.

Click-to-call mobile event tracking
Hello! I want to track calls on mobile devices from a website. I was able to successfully set up an event with Google Analytics that tracks when a user clicks the phone # on the website, however, as you know, when someone clicks a phone # using iOS it prompts a display of the # and gives the users two options, Cancel or Call. My question: is there any way to track when the user clicks the 'Call' action? Thanks

Ga event tracking and GAC code placement
Just relaunched website and since then specific event tracking has zeroed. I copied event tracking directly from old site so it should work. Overall analytics are fine. Only variable I can think of is where google analytics code is placed. Does GAC code need to be on HTML header or at end of body specifically for event tracking to work? Example: Steripen.com/freedom/... When user clicks "REI" icon, this tracks an event that a user clicked on one of our"retailer links." Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Setting up Google Analytic Goals to a 3rd Party Site
I recently received help on a question I asked on SEOmoz but need additional clarification. I am trying to set up goals in Google Analytics for people who click on a “purchase botton” which sends them to PayPal. I created a Thank You page and tried to get PayPal to redirect to it, however, our customers only get to our site’s 404 page. Here is what I’ve done so far: Went into my PayPal account and turned the “Auto Return” to ‘on’ Under website payment preferences, I added the following URL http://www.teecycle.org/thank-youutm_nooverride1. (I formatted the URL this way because the person who provided me with help recommended using the format ?UTM_nooverride=1. However, our CMS system won’t allow “?” or “=”)
