Would you pursue this paid directory link?
-
Hi all,
I KNOW the hard and true answer to this, but I'm looking for deeper insights regarding Links like those contained on this page.
I understand the by-the-book answer to this would be only pursue a paid link if it is "nofollowed" OR if it has the potential to bring in new business and traffic. My question is ....does a link like this actually pass SEO value? I see businesses killing it from an SEO standpoint with link profiles full of paid directory links like this.
I also thought this conversation was more interested now that Google appears to devaluing links like this instead of issue penalties.
Thoughts??

You are most welcome! Best of luck!

Hi John,
GREAT points, you are the man. Exactly the type of detailed feedback I was looking for. That was exactly my thought...we pay for chamber of commerce memberships, BBB etc. that all require payment in order to obtain the link and I know that it's the EXPLICIT act of buying the link alone that is "bad"...just wondered how sophisticated Google was at determining which types of these"paid" links were okay and which weren't.
MUCH appreciated I'll be leaving this one off the client link suggestions spreadsheet

Hey Ricky -
Great question that I think a lot of small businesses and companies deal with. While on the one hand Google's guidelines say "Do not ever pay for a link", that gets really fuzzy in instances like local business bureaus (where you pay a membership fee and happen to get a link on their site), scholarships (where you're giving money and happen to get a link), and a lot more. Even the old Yahoo directory (retired in 2014 or so) was $300 a year and was followed and everyone had it. So the question is a lot more nuanced than "should I or shouldn't I?"
In this case, I would shy away from this specific instance simply because of the following:
- They are actually advertising different types of links depending on what you pay. They also don't say where the additional links for the higher price will go.
- They're willing to link deep for more money. This is a red flag.
- Their WHOis info is private. Not a good sign for an above-the-board company.
- They have another directory on this same IP. If that one got hit, so would this one.
- They may have a DA of 56, but if you look at their links they're (almost) all comment links that were likely built with an automated tool.
All of these are red flags to me. The fact that it is topically relevant to your site is a good thing, but in my opinion the bad definitely outweighs the good.
Spend your money creating things and then outreaching them to get the links that will actually build your business.

Agreed with Sean. I would also not suggest to get paid directory link.
Thanks

Hey Ricky,
Honestly, it probably would pass on some value but I would bet my bottom dollar that it would be short lived, especially now that Google Penguin has become part of the core algorithm and it's likely that this will eventually become machine educated.
My vote is to not.
All the best,
Sean

Internal Linking
Hi, I'm doing internal anchor text links. Relative path. if I use /destination-page instead of https://website.com/destination-page will I still receive a transfer of internal Google trust to the destination page? Does google treat just the / url the same as full url??

How Many Natural Links Do You Earn?
Hello Mozzers, This is a bit of an open ended question and I don't think any one person is going to be the same. I have recently seen the light in my link building practices and I am trying to get a feel for what to expect in terms of natural link acquisition in an effective content marketing strategy. My question is how many natural links do you generally find yourself earning after the first 12 months of content creation/placement with a new website/industry? I know this is going to be a question with a multitude of different answers. I look forward to your valuable insight as always!

Canonicals Passing Link Juice?
After having read this thread, the answer seems to be a tentative "Yes", but I am curious if I am doing this wrong, or causing myself problems, for a specific situation. We have a thread on the forums that has over 50,000 views for that thread alone. No doubt many people have linked to it across the web, and it ranks very well with Google. But we are dealing with a major problem in that the main portion of our site (home page and core content) which are the most important, aren't ranking in Google at all. A big part of this is because that part of the site hasn't been updated in years, whereas the forum is updated daily. By users. We've begun putting out quality content in our News Center lately, and hoping to start boosting its presence in Google. We have an article on the exact same topic that the forum thread covers. I was thinking of putting a canonical on that thread, pointing to the article, and hopefully pointing some very powerful link juice, popularity, and traffic into our news center articles. People can comment there as well if they like. Are there any potential downsides to doing this? My hope is that the forum thread loses rankings and the article takes on its rankings. Thank you.

Outbound link to PDF vs outbound link to page
If you're trying to create a site which is an information hub, obviously linking out to authoritative sites is a good idea. However, does linking to a PDF have the same effect? e.g Linking to Google's SEO starter guide PDF, as opposed to linking to a google article on SEO. Thanks!

Should I Remove My Articles From Article Directories?
I have been submitting articles to directories for about 3 years. With the Panda update, it seems that these directories are now obsolete. So, if there is no link value from these articles: 1) should I remove these articles (at east the better ones) and place them on my site/blog? 2) If not, would there be any benefit at pointing some bookmarks at these old links to maybe get some juice out of them?

Why traffic to my link has dropped suddenly?
Hi I would like to know why the traffic for the website link http://theindustrymeasure.com/2010/07/15/rediffmail-login has dropped suddenly on google.I used to get around 5000 page views on this page and then suddenly dropped to 15-20 . I still get good traffic from yahoo (around 500). Just before the drop I noticed that I started to get spammy trackbacks from Many questionable sources. I have not approved any of these trackbacks. The trackbacks are regular frequency of. 1 per day. is there any action which I can take to ensure that I get back my traffic. Traffic to other links are fine , only this page seems to have dropped off ever since the spam attack. As per seomoz tool I have a grade a for keyword rediffmail
