I just relaunched my website and changed a permalink structure for several pages where only a subdirectory name changed.

What 301 Redirect code do I use to redirect the following? I have dozens of these where I need to change just the directory name from "urban-living" to "urban", and want it to catch the following all in one redirect command.

Here is an example of the structure that needs to change.

      Old
      domain.com/urban-living (single page w/ content)
      domain.com/urban-living/tempe (single page w/ content)
      domain.com/urban-living/tempe/the-vale (single page w/ content)

      New
      domain.com/urban
      domain.com/urban/tempe
      domain.com/urban/tempe/the-vale

Got it. That works. I was using Yoast Premium Redirect tools.

          RewriteRule ^(.)urban-living(.)$ yoursite.com/$1urban$2 [R=301,L]   the "yoursite.com/" wasn't necessary.

This did the trick. RewriteRule ^(.)urban-living(.)$ /$1urban$2 [R=301,L]

          Thanks!

Yeah, that would be a lot of lines to add manuall., I would try the htaccess Rewrite function.

            <ifmodule mod_rewrite.c="">RewriteEngine On
            RewriteBase /

            RewriteRule ^(.)urban-living(.)$ yoursite.com/$1urban$2 [R=301,L]</ifmodule>

            RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
            RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d

            RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?/$1 [L]

            RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.yoursite.com$ [NC]
            RewriteRule ^(.*)$ yoursite.com//$1 [L,R=301]

I'm not an htaccess expert, so I'm not 100% sure that it will work, if not you can check out this stack overflow thread for an explanation of the code used above.

I have more than a dozen... dozenS as in plural.  There are 80 pages with this and want to use a single command to capture all of them, not do them individually.

Is there a way to to that?

Since you only have a dozen of URLs you could just do a simple 301 redirect in your .htaccess file or you can get a little more technical and do a RewriteRule that would 301 "urban-living" to "urban'

                .htaccess 301 Redirect

                Redirect 301/urban-living /urban
                Redirect 301/urban-living/tempe /urban/tempe
                Redirect 301/urban-living/tempe/the-vale /urban/tempe/the-vale

Hope this helps, if not, let me know if you have any questions!

Best redirect destination for 18k highly-linked pages

redirect redirect chain technical seo 301 redirects

Technical SEO question regarding redirects; I appreciate any insights on best way to handle. Situation: We're decommissioning several major content sections on a website, comprising ~18k webpages. This is a well established site (10+ years) and many of the pages within these sections have high-quality inbound links from .orgs and .edus. Challenge: We're trying to determine the best place to redirect these 18k pages. For user experience, we believe best option is the homepage, which has a statement about the changes to the site and links to the most important remaining sections of the site. It's also the most important page on site, so the bolster of 301 redirected links doesn't seem bad. However, someone on our team is concerned that that many new redirected pages and links going to our homepage will trigger a negative SEO flag for the homepage, and recommends instead that they all go to our custom 404 page (which also includes links to important remaining sections). What's the right approach here to preserve remaining SEO value of these soon-to-be-redirected pages without triggering Google penalties?

Delete old blog posts after 301 redirects to new pages?

Hi Moz Community, I've recently created several new pages on my site using much of the same copy from blog posts on the same topics (we did this for design flexibility and a few other reasons). The blogs and pages aren't exactly identical, as the new pages have much more content, but I don't think there's a point to having both and I don't want to have duplicate content, so we've used 301 redirects from the old blog posts to the new pages of the same topic. My question is: can I go ahead and delete the old blog posts? (Or would there be any reasons I shouldn't delete them?) I'm guessing with the 301 redirects, all will be well in the world and I can just delete the old posts, but I wanted to triple check to make sure. Thanks so much for your feedback, I really appreciate it!

301 Redirects, Sitemaps and Indexing - How to hide redirected urls from search engines?

We have several pages in our site like this one, http://www.spectralink.com/solutions, which redirect to deeper page, http://www.spectralink.com/solutions/work-smarter-not-harder. Both urls are listed in the sitemap and both pages are being indexed. Should we remove those redirecting pages from the site map? Should we prevent the redirecting url from being indexed? If so, what's the best way to do that?

301 redirect: canonical or non canonical?

Hi, Newbie alert! I need to set up 301 redirects for changed URLs on a database driven site that is to be redeveloped shortly. The current site uses canonical header tags. The new site will also use canonical tags. Should the 301 redirects map the canonical URL on the old site to the corresponding canonical for the new design . . . or should they map the non canonical database URLs old and new? Given that the purpose of canonicals is to indicate our preferred URL, then my guess is that's what I should use. However, how can I be sure that Google (for example) has indexed the canonical in every case? Thx in anticipation.

                  301 redirect not working

Hi there! I have recently moved a domain that has been indexed by google and setup redirects so that it forwards to the new domain. It seems like the only redirect that actually is working is the canonical and main domain but every other page and or page nested within a folder are not working. Here is an example of some of the redirects. Am I doing this wrong? It seems to be going to the new domain but can't find the actual pages.... RewriteEngine On
                  RewriteBase /
                  RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !agoodsweep.com$ [NC]
                  RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://agoodsweep.com/$1 [L,R=301]
                  redirect 301 woodstoveservicerepair.html http://agoodsweep.com/woodstoveservicerepair/
redirect 301 /westchesterchimney.html http://agoodsweep.com/west-chester-chimney/ Thanks in advance for any help!!

Can I remove 301 redirects after some time?

Hello, We have an very large number of 301 redirects on our site and would like to find a way to remove some of them. Is there a time frame after which Google does not need a 301 any more? For example if A is 301 redirected to B, does Google know after a while not to serve A any more, and replaces any requests for A with B? How about any links that go to A? Or: Is the only option to have all links that pointed to A point to B and then the 301 can be removed after some time? Thank you for you you help!

                  302 or 301 redirect to https ?

I am redirecting whole site to https. Is there a difference between 302 or 301 redirect for seo? Site never been indexed. Planning to do that with .htaccess command RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !=on
RewriteRule ^(.*) https://%{SERVER_NAME}/$1 [R,L] There are plenty of ways http://www.askapache.com/htaccess/ssl-example-usage-in-htaccess.html Which way would be the best? Thanks is advance
