Adding a secondary keyword or other keyword variation to the title tag affect ranking for primary keyword?
-
Hi Moz Community,
According to Google Search Console, the main keyword for our website is undergoing a low click through rate, even though we have good ranking for that keyword (top 3). Currently, our homepage's title tag is "Brand Name: Primary Keyword".
I am thinking about adding a secondary keyword or other keyword variation to differentiate our company from others in order to possibly increase the click through rate. Will this affect the current ranking for the primary keyword?
Also, is the clickthrough data in Google Search Console accurate?
Thank you!
Best,
Raymond

We always go with the more specific geo and it has worked for us. Blue was just giving an example not knowing your precise location. The only caveat is that whatever geo modifier you add should be easily recognized by both Google and users. For example, I have some clients that attempt to use abbreviations and slang on their website "because it proves I'm a local". But if Google doesn't recognize it, it has no SEO value.
Easy way to check - search the location on Google and see if they have it defined in their maps.
And I know Google knows where Manhattan is

Do you think that <title>Manhattan Pizza - Free Delivery in Uptown</title> would be superior?
Pizza in New York is really broad. Could mean Buffalo.

To echo Brett, it's always good to include as much information as possible to help your user determine what service/product you are offering. With that said, if you can describe MORE within your title tag, you're improving user experience. An example of doing this correctly would look like: Pizza in New York | Pizza Restaurant NY | Pizzeria
Hope this helps!

Hello Raymond, I'll answer you second question first because the explanation is a bit lengthier.
There has been a lot of debate over the years about how accurate the information in Search Console is, particularly some of the information in Search Analytics. Personally, I found the information to be inaccurate at worst and misleading at best. As an example, I searched through the number of impressions one of my client's small local sites had received over a period of thirty days and discovered my client was ranking for some long tail keywords that were misspelled and had somehow received hundreds of impressions from those keywords. I then checked the volume of those keywords in Adwords and saw immediately that there was a discrepancy between what Adwords reported (an extremely low yearly volume) and Search Console (extremely high monthly impressions).
So either A) impressions means what we traditionally know it to mean - someone typed in a keyword and landed in the SERP and saw the listing. Which would mean the information is inaccurate (possibly tracking bot traffic?). Or B) impressions means something else entirely in Search Console, which means it's misleading.
This was a roundabout way of saying don't take Search Console data as gospel. There isn't a clear cut guide on how the information is gathered and disseminated, meaning you cannot quality check it for accuracy the way you can with Google Analytics.
To answer your first question: adding a secondary keyword that's relevant is unlikely to negatively impact you. I would find it highly suspect that Google would rank you lower for adding MORE content to your website, and the additional keyword could improve CTR, which has been associated with higher rankings for awhile now, as a sort of positive signal with a short half-life. Just make sure it makes sense for your users and the topics are related. "Tree removal and tree trimming" is acceptable, whereas "Tree removal and ice cream" would be confusing and I would be unsurprised to see a negative impact from that.

Hi guys, We have product e-commerce title tags which are over 60 characters - around 80 plus. The reason we added them in there is to incorporate

more information for Google. The format of these title tags are: Name + Colour + Rug Type + Origin Name = for people searching for the name of the rug
Color = people searching for a specific color
Type = The type of rug (e.g. normal or designer)
Origin = Where the rug is for. So this title will cover people searching for: People searching for designer rugs, the specific colour and also where it comes from. This then results in the title tag going way over 60 characters - around 80-90 characters. -- Would it be wise to try and shrink it down to under 60 characters, and what would be a good approach to do this? Irrelevant blog contents negatively affect ranking for main keywords?
Hi Moz Community, I am working at a branding company. Currently, we found our ranking for main keywords (branding company) is dropping a little. I am suspicious of the new blog posts that we published lately. We wrote different kind of stuff, such as company culture, how to inspire employees, the importance of leadership and some other stuff that is actually not as related to our main keyword - branding company. My question is, will these irrelevant posts hurt our ranking for main keyword, to some extent? Thank you. Best, Raymond

Home page ranks for most keywords with no SEO
Hi Guys, The keyword I am trying to rank is on seperate page with its own Optimization in place. However the HOME page of website starts ranking for that keywords . The keyword is mentioned on Home page Just once in content description, that's all. What should be my ideal strategy. Deleting the Sub Page, will that improve the SEO of my home page and improve the Rank for that keyword ? Also I can see my Own YELP pages rank better than the actual website for few terms . Any way around this ? A Part from building links to page ?

Does Google View "SRC", "HREF", TITLE and Alt tags as Duplicate Content on Home Page Slider?
Greetings MOZ Community. A keyword matrix was developed by my SEO firm. I am in the process of integrating primary, secondary and terciary phrases into the text and am also sprinkling three or four other terms. Using a keyword density tool (http://www.webconfs.com/keyword-density-checker.php) the results were somewhat unexpected after I optimized. So I then looked at the source code and noticed text from HREF, ALT and SRC tags that may be effecting how Google would interpret text on the page. Our home page (www.nyc-officespace-leader.com) contains a slider with commercial real estate listings. Would Google index the SRC, HREF, TITLE and ALT tags in these slider items? Would this be detrimental to SEO? The code for one listing (and there are 7-8 in the slider) looks like this: | href="http://www.nyc-officespace-leader.com/listings/305-fifth-avenue-office-suite-1340sf" title="Lease a Prestigious Fifth Avenue Office - Manhattan, New York">Class A Fifth Avenue Offices class="blockLeft"><a< p=""></a<> href="http://www.nyc-officespace-leader.com/listings/305-fifth-avenue-office-suite-1340sf" title="Lease a Prestigious Fifth Avenue Office - Manhattan, New York"> src="http://dr0nu3l9a17ym.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/fsrep/houses/125x100/305.jpg" alt="Lease a Prestigious Fifth Avenue Office - Manhattan, New York" width="125" height="94" /> 1,340 Sq. Ft. $5,918 / month Fifth Avenue Midtown / Grand Central <a< p=""></a<> | Could the repetition of the title text ("lease a Prestigious Fifth...") trigger a duplicate content penalty? Should the slider content be blocked or set to no-index by some kind of a Java script? We have worked very hard to optimize the home page so it would be a real shame if through some technical oversight we got hit by a Google Panda penalty. Thanks, Alan Thanks

Brand traffic moved from organic to PPC - could it affect rankings?
Hi, We've just increased a lot of branded PPC clicks for one of our clients. I've worked out that roughly 5000 clicks per month has been moved from organic search to PPC (all brand related search queries). These clicks are very cheap, but the client has expressed worries about what these clicks could do to our organic rankings. Lots of brand search in organic results proves to Google that this is a strong brand, right? So what happens when all the searches are still there, but the organic listings stop getting the clicks? Could this have a ring effect on other non-brand rankings?

Keywords in WMT
Hello, In Googles Web master tools under "content keywords" 2 of my major keywords are missing. My site used to rank well for the keyphrase "short hairstyles" but gets very little traffic from google at all now, about 1% of what it did before april 2012. Someone did a negative seo number on us by pointing 10k+ spammy links to us from message boards, this and the timing of the traffic loss leads me to suspectthe penguin update. I am removing them as best I can but no increase in traffic has resulted so I'm looking for any and all issues and the missing keywords seems to be an oddity. The missing keywords include "short" which is pretty fundemental. The word is in the domain and plenty of times in the content. Any ideas?

2 Year Old Keyword Focused Site Will Not Rank for Keyword
Hi All, I need your help. This site is confounding me. The site is turnstilefactory.com It's a few years old. Strong domain name and seo focused on the term 'turnstile'. In bound links are not abundant, but certainly not absent either. Considering the subject matter, content and competition in the space, I would expect this site by now to at least be in the top 10 pages for the search 'turnstile', but it's not. I've tried everything I can think of with this, but it just won't rank for anything other than it's domain name. Can anyone please take a look and let me know if they see something I'm missing? It would be appreciated. Thanks.
