How do we get rid of irrelavant inbound links
-
Hi Moz Community,
We were previously doing Content services and Design services. Now, we are only into design service and we have deleted all content services related pages. Our website has many inbound links coming because of the content services pages but they are not relevant to our present service anymore.
Will this affect our credibility on google and other search engines?
We have applied 410 code to many of these old pages. We have also redirected some of them to the wayback pages. However, they still appear as one of the popular pages.
Is there any solution for this?
What can we do to do away with many of these inbound links coming to our website which are not relevant anymore to our current service?
Your advice is so much appreciated.
Thanks!

Thank you so much, Hurf. That was helpful.
On our 410 page, we did write a note saying we no longer provide content services. The only thing that bothers us is that those old links keep showing on our most popular pages even after we 410ed them many months back and they still appear on our Search Console crawl errors. I think disavowing those links is not a good idea either as they were credible back then.
So, again does these crawl errors from the old links affect our credibility on search engines? Just want to be sure.
Thanks again!

If the inbound links are truly irrelevant to your company then a 410 redirect (Content deleted) is the best approach, as you're telling the search engines that you removed those pages on purpose and they should be de-indexed. A 410 should see this de-indexing happen pretty quickly (quicker than a 404, which will linger as there's a change the content was only temporarily unavailable and could return). This practice won't affect your credibility - it's simply good practice. There's no sense in redirecting them to the Wayback version of your site, either, as you simply don't offer that service any more, so the visitor is still none the wiser when they arrive there. An alternative, I suppose - if you'd like to point out that you no longer offer that service, would be to 301 redirect the remaining links to a page on your site informing visitors that you no longer carry out service X, perhaps offering a list of alternative service X providers?
My preference would be the 410 as that is best practice as 301 redirects to irrelevant pages have little or no value.
I hope that helps.
Good luck.

Page Authority vs Domain Authority for Inbound Links
When executed correctly, earning links from high authority sites that are relevant to my website's industry are still valuable correct? So I want to know what is more valuable to my site and influencing the ranking of my site? Is it better to gain links that have a high page authority or domain authority? What is more valuable to my site and influencing its ranking?

Indirect Link Earning via dofollow Links In News Articles
Hello, MOZ SEO Gurus. I've been trying to think some deep thoughts on safe, effective link earning for news publishing sites, and wanted to run this up the flagpole and see if you salute. Our site is a biotech news service -- we pump out copious amounts of news content each day, which works well for driving traffic. That being said, we also want to rank some optimized landing pages as well. Take, for example, this page, which we'd like to rank for "secondary progressive MS" and related keywords: http://bionews-tx.com/secondary-progressive-ms/ Now, as far as I'm concerned, shopping this page around to MS influencers isn't easy. I can go to Foundational websites, blogs, etc., and say, "hey, we have this info page on SPMS, and I thought that you might find it helpful/want to link to it." But chances are, the MS influencers already have their own proprietary content on SPMS, and there isn't much value to linking to it. Therefore, I think that we'll get few link earning conversions on the effort. However, what if I take our Secondary Progressive MS landing page, and I link to it in a corresponding article about SPMS research, as I did here: http://bionews-tx.com/news/2014/01/30/secondary-progressive-ms-natalizumab-clinical-trial/ Then, I go to the drug developer who is at the center of this story and say to them, "hey, we recently covered your drug in the news, and I thought you might want to link to it." Then, we get a link from an MS drug developer to the news article, which in turn has a prominent anchor text, dofollow internal link to the landing page for SPMS. If the link from the drug developer is dofollow, then we flow page rank juice from the drug developer page to our news page to our landing page. To me, it's much easier to earn safe links this way than to try and shop the landing page itself. That being said, if we get a dofollow link on the news piece, we only get a diminished portion of page rank going to the landing page. Is this strategy viable? Is the indirect flow of page rank from a linking site to a news article to a landing page even worth it? I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

Unnatural inbound link warning
Hey guys, One of our clients has just reported that they've received an email from WMT stating they may have "Unnatural Inbound Links". I've done some research and found this link which certainly seemed applicable; http://searchengineland.com/how-to-remove-your-unnatural-inbound-links-130073 As you can imagine, going through all of the client's backlinks may be a time consuming process so I was just wondering what the time frame for these Google warnings is like? Because we've got the email now, does it mean that a bad link was built fairly recently? Or could it have been a number of months ago? Also, what are people's experiences dealing with these type of emails? Is it just a case of sifting through links and then re-submitting to WMT? Thanks

Can I Gather Inbound Links from Different Subject External Websites?
I am working on link building campaign and trying to gather inbound links from various subject external websites. I have big confusion with this effort. I am working on eCommerce website and getting inbound links from technology related website. So, Does it really matter for better performance? I want to give one example to get more idea. I am selling table lamps on my website and trying to get inbound links from that kind of websites which are highly dominating to table lamps or lighting industry. But, This is not only one case. Sometime, I have opportunities to create inbound links from different subject website. Simply, If I will compile one content for UGC section on SEOmoz and links to my website with table lamps so, Will it help me to rank for table lamps keyword? Exact match hyperlinks on external website always matter::: That I aware about it. But, what about subject orientation. I am Table Lamps monster & you are SEO monster. So, Will Google give benefit to that kind of links which are dominating different subject? I have solved some issues about quality of website after installing SEOmoz toolbar in my browser. Because, I or We are visiting multiple websites during daily stuff and may find out opportunities to drop our website link over there. But, I have fear to drop my website link in any website. Does it really matter quality or website & How can I judge it better rather than SEOmoz toolbar? I have added such a big question with proper declaration but, I want to jump in to link building campaign and want to earn good value after my long term effort.
