Preserving rankings after migration
-
I have acquired new a client who wants to migrate to a new platform. He also wants a 100% guarantee we maintain he Google search rankings. How realistic is this? Anyone got a checklist they can recommend?
-
The client sells school uniforms. I have now discovered he has created a number of 'hub' pages which simply contain lists of school names for each region, where each of the school names link to a page of fairly banal blurb about each school.
Given that he does not sell uniforms for most of these schools, it looks like classic keyword stuffing.
This being the case, surely it wouldn't be wise to preserve this type of content, even though this strategy has gotten him some pretty good rankings?
-
Thanks James.
The client has already said he wants to change look and feel, possibly the navigation too. So I suspect too many changes to avoid some SEO flux.
-
If there's a CMS change, then yes, I agree with Brandon that it's a completely unrealistic request. I've provided SEO support on dozens of site migrations, and there's always some initial loss, even when you check all the boxes on every migration list you can find.
The only way that this is possible is if you're reskinning of a site, a la choosing a new theme in WP where URLs don't change and on-page opt stay the same. And even then, with all the UX considerations in Google's algo, you're still likely to see some flux.
-
Thanks Brandon. I tend to agree with you. Just too many variables outside of my control.
Given that they are moving to Shopify, which means 'collections' and 'products' added to URLs, it's clearly impossible to maintain continuity in URLs and site/nav structure.
Nightmare!

A guarantee is not realistic at all. Even if you make the new site better, while retaining as much of its integrity as possible, your rankings will fluctuate and some keywords may even drop. In fact, the client is actually asking for you to guarantee rankings, which Google explicitly dismisses.
Your #1 goal when performing a migration is to maintain content integrity for every page. In a perfect world, you would maintain the integrity of the site in its entirety, but with a platform change that cannot be done.
So simply said: every page on Site A should be maintained as much as possible on Site B, while Page A-Z on Site A redirects to the proper Page A-Z on Site B. This means everything that you can preserve reasonably, you should preserve and the appropriate redirects should be in place. It goes without saying, but all elements like URLs, page titles, H1s, etc. are to be maintained.

Thank you James. Very useful.
The current site is custom-built in PHP, moving to Shopify. So straight away, I know the URLs and site structure cannot be the same. There's also a very good chance they will move from http to https. I've seen several sites drop page authority when this happens.
Doesn't sound promising does it?!

Fix Duplicate Content Before Migration?
My client has 2 Wordpress sites (A and B). Each site is 20 pages, with similar site structures, and 12 of the pages on A having nearly 100% duplicate content with their counterpart on B. I am not sure to what extent A and/or B is being penalized for this. In 2 weeks (July 1) the client will execute a rebrand, renaming the business, launching C, and taking down A and B. Individual pages on A and B will be 301 redirected to their counterpart on C. C will have a similar site structure to A and B. I expect the content will be freshened a bit, but may initially be very similar to the content on A and B. I have 3 questions: Given that only 2 weeks remain before the switchover - is there any purpose in resolving the duplicate content between A and B prior to taking them down? Will 301 redirects from penalized pages on A or B actually hurt the ranking of the destination page on C? If a page on C has the same content as its predecessor on A or B, could it be penalized for that, even though the page on A or B has since been taken down and replaced with a 301 redirect?

Yahoo and Bing Rankings
Hello. I have noticed that Yahoo and Bing rankings for all of my clients have significantly tanked as of the beginning of March. Has there been a recent algorithm update for these two search engines and what are some major things I can look for to fix? Thank you,

301 redirect impact on ranking
If Website A is ranking 19th position in Google for a specific keyword, and Website B is ranking 30th position for the same keyword, What would be impact after 301 redirect? Will Website A drop to 30th position because of 301 or existing position would improve because of link juice?

Ranking strangeness
Just wondering if anyone had come across this kind of scenario which I had/have with a client. Rebuilt/revamped site that has got problems with thin content we are looking to resolve. Rankings for the main keywords were ok on page 2 or 3 and being worked on. Two weeks ago ALL main keywords disappeared from ranking (category pages). The homepage took over and ranked ALL those keywords at #1! Bang -straight to top spot. However happy I was I find this disconcerting as there is a reasonable level of competition. Today homepage rankings in the main go and directories come back into the rankings at some good positions on page one. We still need to fix thin and duplicated content! I can justify the problems and swing with the category pages but the massive cross the board top position for the homepage has been pretty bizarre. Has anyone else had the experience where the homepage suddenly 'out-performs' in a big way?

Google Places - How do we rank
So, google places showing up on search results is great feature . . . But how can we get our results to the top? I mean I can see some terrible websites appearing at the top of the google places with their places page having no activity whatsoever. Is there a trick to this at all? What can we do to increase our ranking on Google Places because our old GOOD rankings are now appearing BELOW the map results Cheers

The ranking power of exact match domains
I've read previous Q&A where people have been a bit dismissive of the ranking significance of exact match domains but my experience recently using the keyword competiveness tool is that exact match domains seem to outrank other sites regardless of domain or page authority or other on-site/on-page optimisation. I'm interested in other people's opinions and experiences.
