BetterWidget or Better Widget? Brand name effect on SEO
-
I have a company that produces widgets. People generally search for "widget". I need to decide how to brand my company.
Stylistically, I like BetterWidget, but I worry about the effects on SEO. If people are commonly searching for "widget", and my page title contains "BetterWidget", but no other use of the term, that may have a negative effect.
1. Is Google able to parse through these joined words? (this is similar but distinct from the discussion on common compound words like ice cream)
2. Does capitalization of the second "word" in the joined word help signal to Google that these are two terms joined together?
3. On the flip side, is there a negative effect from not having a unique "brand". In other words, articles that are about my company Better Widget may seem to google just to be about better widgets in general.
Thanks

Hi!
Martin is correct in saying that it is likely that Google will be able to understand what your company does based on links and content outside of your brand's name. Also, I would suggest focusing your keyword targeting on actual content on the page rather than in your company's name. Like, a title tag on your homepage or page could read " Widgets for work | BetterWidget " (just an example). This would communicate both what your keyword research suggests is the term your users search for as well as your brand.
Also, I like BetterWidget the best as well.
Hope that is helpful!

Hey there, I wouldn't be concerned about this too much. Google is not a dummy software anymore and knows from all the articles, links and context about your company that it's actually a brand. Just go for what you like more. I personally like BetterWidget as it gives an impression of young and high-tech company. Just compare: Facebook is not Face Book, YouTube is not You Tube etc...

Brand name not ranking in Google
Hi Moz'ers, Could you help me with something I cannot seem to figure out by myself. In June 2017 my company started a rebranding campaign. We've changed our brand name and launched a new website: https://spotler.com. Everything is going fine, but if you Google our brand name "Spotler" our website doesn't show up. How can it be? Our domain authority is 38. It would be wonderful if you could help me. Let me know if you need more information. Best, Simone

Not ranking at all for generic term which is also our brand name
Hello, I am working with a client in the indoor / outdoor wicker furniture area. They have "wicker" in their domain. However using the moz keyword ranking tool they do not appear at all in 51+ results. There was a time that we were appearing on page 1 but then dropped off. Anyone have any ideas on what could be causing us not to rank at all for that generic term? Our google places listing does come up for when people are local to the store and search, but the website does not.

How does putting a trial sign up code mid-blog post effect SEO? Do you think it will make my content seem less pleasing, therefor decrease the page rank??
I'm working on driving trials for our product - we have a number of blog posts that rank on page #1 of Google, and we get 2-3 trial sign ups per day from them. I'd like to put trial signup boxes about midway down each post to see if I can increase the number of trial signups that come directly from our blog. Do you think I can be "penalized" for this, since it's mid- blog-post content? Do you think Google will view this negatively?

Subdomain vs root which is better for SEO
We run a network of sites that we are considering consolidating into one main site with multiple categories. Which would be better having each of the "topics / site" reside in subdomains or as a sub-folder off of the root? Pros and cons of each would be great. Thanks, TR

SEO for a plumber?
Hello, How does a small, local business win at SEO (without abusing directories, articles, and paid links)? It seems that everyone is saying "create unique content", but that just doesn't seem realistic for a small plumber in a big metro area. One might suggest coming up with helpful articles about plumbing tips, etc., but there are thousands of spun articles on article directories already. On page optimization is in place, we are listed in the main directories, we've asked the people we know to link to us, and we are engaged in social media. What would you recommend next? Thanks, Will

Breadcrumb Trail for SEO?
Due to the fact that we aren't in the #1 position, (dropped from #5 to page 2 - You have to love Devs and IT), our heads have hired a SEO Audit/Consultant company to review everything we are doing. I would like to post some of the things they are telling us to do, in which I don't 100% agree with and would like some other professional feedback. Especially since their site isn't marketed very well. http://www.trupanionpetinsurance.com Disclaimer: (this site was a complete nightmare when I started a year and a half ago. Yes, there are many issues that still need to be addressed.) Breadcrumb Trail They have asked us to implement a Breadcrumb trail on every page, where the final page is the only H1 Tag. Are breadcrumb trials important for SEO? (I know they are helpful for Users, but SEO) Are they important for Search Engines to track back for structure. Any thoughts about them? Ability to predict the future of SEO?
I just finished watching a documentary on Ray Kurzweil, Transcedent, and began to familiarize myself with his book, The Singularity is Near. During Ray's explanation of prediction through data gathering and extrapolation, he predicts that by 2029 AI and humans will have merged. We can debate this at another time, but I was wondering if any of the statistics/data is used by SEO professionals to predict where SEO may be going in the next 12-48 months. It has been my experience that SEO is very reactionary, and very few put their neck out on a limb to predict where it is going. I was just hoping that some of you may share your thoughts on what you are focusing on and where you are steering your clients in order to be ahead of the curve without hurting current placement. Anyone care to share?
