Is having one blanket h1 tag across my site bad?
-
I've been working on figuring out if my site host (jigsy) is hindering my seo. The site editor doesn't allow me to assign individual h1 tags for each page, it just blankets one across the whole site as part of a theme.....is this normal?...would it be better to have individual h1s?....is that a thing? Or should I work on making a better one since all my pages should technically be related to counseling/therapy?
Site: www.joeborders.com

You Should have a self hosted website. Do not use Wix or Squarespace. SEO is terrible on these platforms.
-
What does the h1 tag say. The words... That's copy.
-
...but now I'm reading through their material on seo and it looks like they do support individual h1 tags for each page? lolol
-
you guys, I'm losing my mind lol. Just talked with a representative at Squarespace and he said they do the exact same thing! Is this something thats maybe not a big deal and I'm just worrying too much?
-
Ugh! this is what I've been trying to solidly figure out. I also just learned that they don't have any way for me to do redirects on blog pages and....soooo I've got all these old ones with bad permalinks Im stuck with.
This brings up another problem though, They are making it really difficult to move to another host. There is no way to transfer my site aside from doing something manually....and I'm afraid of messing up stuff that might damage my seo. What do you think?
by the way, my host is jigsy.com...a couple of times when I've asked them about something they have said they are on "ruby on rails"?
-
Change hosts as soon as possible!
If you don't you will shoot yourself when you finally find out how much traffic you are losing by not having each page optimzied with the proper title tag.
-
I'm not sure what you mean by the copy of the h1 tag the site is producing. My site address is www.joeborders.com
I contacted customer support at jigsy again today and they said I have no option about the blanket h1 tag and that their system uses all other headings as h2s. They did say that I can add additional h1 tags to the html code on individual pages....not sure if Google would hate me for this
-
You should have control over your h1 tags. What is the copy of the h1 tag that the site is producing? Is the site a wordpress site? You would not want to have just one h1 tag with the same copy for every page. The H1 acts like a title. It is the most important tag when it comes to SEO

Header Logo and H1
I would like to use the website logo on our site as the H1 for the homepage (see top 'Covers' logo http://www.covers.com/index.aspx ). I have found one of our sister sites with code like this Gracenote with CSS that sets the text to 'transparent' and the background image to the logo. My question is would the text be consumed or ignored by the robot? Unfortunately, wedging an H1 in anywhere else is not possible at this time, so this is my best option. Is this change worthwhile? THanks in advance.

Is alt text inside an img tag inside an h1 the same weight as text directly inside the h1?
Right now I use a background image and CSS to tie the h1 tag to my logo on each page. However, I am concerned that may not be best practice. Plus, I am interested in using schema markup on my logo. So, my question is, if I use an image with alt text inside my h1 tag, will the alt text carry as much weight as a text-based h1?

How do you find bad links to your site?
My website has around 900 incoming links and I have a Google 50 penalty that is sitewide. I have been doing research and from what I can see is that the 50 penalty is usually associated with scetchy links. The penalty started last year. I had about 40 related domains to my main site and each had a simple one page site with a link to the main site. (I know I screwed up) I cleaned up all of those links by removing them. The single page site still exist, but they have no links and several of them still rank very well. I also had an outside SEO person that bought a few links. I came clean with Google and told them everything. I gave them all of my sites and that the SEO person had bought links. I gave them full disclosure and removed everything. I have one site that I can't get the link removed from. I have contacted them numerous times to remove the link and I get no response. I am curious if anyone has had a simular experience and how they corrected the situation. Another issue is that my site is "thin" because its an ecommerce affiliate site and full of affiliate links. I work in the costume market. I'm also afraid that I have other bad links pointing to my site. Dooes anyone know of a tool to identify bad links that Google may be penalizing me for at this time. Here is Google's latest denial of my reconsideration request. Dear site owner or webmaster of XXXXXXXXX.com. Img before or after h1 tag?
I like images to align right at top of content page. img tag before h1 tag looks better on page, but wondering if h1 tag before img tag is preferred by spider. Irrelevant? or possibly matters? thanks for any thoughts.
