Query based site; duplicate content; seo juice flow.
-
Hi guys,
We're planning on starting a Saas based service where we'll be selling different skins. Let's say WordPress themes, though it's not about that. Say we have an url called site.com/ and we would like to direct all seo juice to the mother landing page /best-wp-themes/ but then have that juice flow towards our additional pages:
/best-wp-themes/?id=Mozify
/best-wp-themes/?id=Fiximoz/best-wp-themes/?id=Mozicom
Challenges:
1. our content would be formatted like this:
a. Same content - featuresb. Same content - price
c. Different content - each theme will have its own set of features / design specs.
d. Same content - testimonials.
How would be go about not being penalised by SE's for the duplicate content, but still have the /?id=whatever pages be indexed with proper content?
2. How do we go about making sure SEO juice flows to the /?id pages too?Basically it's the same thing with different skins.
Thanks for the help!

No problem. And there are ways around presenting the same content differently. It's hard to be specific without being able to know what the product is, but it's something I've had to solve for various clients, whether it's been for software or actual products.

Dan,
Thanks for your time to address this question. Now it's all very clear. The problem wasn't that we don't want to invest time - but rather than there can be only so many ways in which you can present the same overall thing. It's clear now that there's no quick fire solution for this. Thank you for taking the time to address my question and help out.

So you want to rank at the top of search results and get people to pay for your products, but you can't invest the time to write some decent content for 20 pages?
You don't get penalised for duplicate content - what happens is that all except one result will be filtered out generally. Or you'll be seen as low quality and won't rank for any... You can canonicalise all the pages to 1 main page which will have a better chance of ranking, and that will tell Google that you know it's duplicate content. But you'll only ever have that canonical example ranking - if that's better than investing in either creating unique content yourself or outsourcing it to someone that can, then that's the route to go.

HI Dan,
Thanks for the answer however it's still not very clear. What exactly do you mean by "beef up unique features"? To try and "rewrite" them in a different way for each different product? That may not be feasible with over 20 different products to present. So would there be any way of telling google that we "know" that's duplicate content and not be penalised for this?
Thanks for everything else - cleared things big time for us.

Basically, beef up the unique set of features and design specs as much as possible. And you could hopefully build up unique testimonials pretty quickly. Or just select different ones from different products, so you're not duplicating them across every product you do.
In terms of 'SEO juice', why would you not just link to the individual pages as appropriate as much as possible? That will still raise the overall homepage in the same way as you're suggesting, but without trying to adjust the 'page rank sculpting' which has become less and less effective over the years. And just try to have as few links and navigation on the homepage as far as possible which don't point to your product pages. It's fine to nofollow links like a privacy policy or Terms and Conditions, but as for anything further, you get into potentially risky behaviour for a penalty.

Duplicate content on sites from different countries
Hi, we have a client who currently has a lot of duplicate content with their UK and US website. Both websites are geographically targeted (via google webmaster tools) to their specific location and have the appropriate local domain extension. Is having duplicate content a major issue, since they are in two different countries and geographic regions of the world? Any statement from Google about this? Regards, Bill

SEO for an exponentially growing site?
Hey Mozers! I was having a quick chat with a friend the other day on doing SEO for a site that grows in page size at an exponential rate and was just wondering how you would go about optimizing it? The example that we used would be a site that allowed users to upload videos and then have people vote on two videos against each other. So, if there are 100 uploaded videos and each of them are pared up with the other 99 to create a unique voting/battle page which has it's own unique URL, the site can get very large, VERY quickly. Meaning if just one more video is uploaded there would be How exactly would you go about optimizing the site? My biggest area of confusion would be generating sitemaps. I'm aware of best practices with large sitemaps (i.e. having a sitemap of sitemaps, not going over 50k in entries per sitemap etc..) But, how would you go about creating the sitemaps for this website if it's growing at an exponential rate, if at all? If you have any other questions feel free to ask and I'll clarify it. Thanks! 😃 **TL;DR How would you optimize a site that grows at an exponential rate? **

Copying my Facebook content to website considered duplicate content?
I write career advice on Facebook on a daily basis. On my homepage users can see the most recent 4-5 feeds (using FB social media plugin). I am thinking to create a page on my website where visitors can see all my previous FB feeds. Would this be considered duplicate content if I copy paste the info, but if I use a Facebook social media plugin then it is not considered duplicate content? I am working on increasing content on my website and feel incorporating FB feeds would make sense. thank you

404 for duplicate content?
Sorry, I think this is my third question today... But I have a lot of duplicated content on my site. I use joomla so theres a lot of unintentional duplication. For example, www.mysite.com/index.php exists, etc. Up till now, I thought I had to 301 redirect or rel=canonical these "duplicated pages." However, can I just 404 it? Is there anything wrong with this rpactice in regards to SEO?

Handling Similar page content on directory site
Hi All, SEOMOZ is telling me I have a lot of duplicate content on my site. The pages are not duplicate, but very similar, because the site is a directory website with a page for cities in multiple states in the US. I do not want these pages being indexed and was wanting to know the best way to go about this. I was thinking I could do a rel ="nofollow" on all the links to those pages, but not sure if that is the correct way to do this. Since the folders are deep within the site and not under one main folder, it would mean I would have to do a disallow for many folders if I did this through Robots.txt. The other thing I am thinking of is doing a meta noindex, follow, but I would have to get my programmer to add a meta tag just for this section of the site. Any thoughts on the best way to achieve this so I can eliminate these dup pages from my SEO report and from the search engine index? Thanks!

Duplicate content question? thanks
Hi, Im my time as an SEO I have never come across the following two scenarios, I am an advocate of using unique content, therefore always suggest and in cases demand that all content is written or re-written. This is the scenarios I am facing right now. For Example we have www.abc.com (has over 200 original recipes) and then we have www.xyz.com with the recipes but they are translated into another language as they are targeting different audiences, will Google penalize for duplicate content? The other issue is that the client got the recipes from www.abc.com (that have been translated) and use them in www.xyz.com aswell, both sites owned by the same company so its not pleagurism they have legal rights but I am not sure how Google will see it and if it will penalize the sites. Thanks!

BEING PROACTIVE ABOUT CONTENT DUPLICATION...
So we all know that duplicate content is bad for SEO. I was just thinking... Whenever I post new content to a blog, website page etc...there should be something I should be able to do to tell Google (in fact all search engines) that I just created and posted this content to the web... that I am the original source .... so if anyone else copies it they get penalised and not me... Would appreciate your answers... 🙂 regards,

How to seo : two domain having exactly the same content
Target website in question is ikt.co.id,it is hosted in our server located in US, what I am going to do right now is create a new subdomain id.ikt.co.id that served EXACTLY the same content but it is hosted in our Indonesia server. Whenever people go to any page within ikt.co.id, it will detect their country, if they are from Indonesia, I will redirect them to our Indonesia server. Okay, from SEO point of view I know there are couple problems such as Content duplication, and perhaps there are more. I think to handle the content duplication I can cannonical all URL on id.ikt.co.id to the ikt.co.id version instead. The same thing for social sharing, all links shared will be the one from ikt.co.id, so all of those link juices go to ikt.co.id, and for good measure I can also set the robots.txt to tell them not to index id.ikt.co.id ... All sounded good to me, until the I became paranoid and start thinking "have I missed anything that might hurt my SERP" ? here is the question, did i miss something important, if i did could you please tell me what it is and if possible brought the solution you think might work into this discussion?? Again thanks a lot for your help 😃
