Archiving System - is it thing of the past?
-
My IT is convinced that we should build one for our webiste as we have an event page that changes content quite rapidly. It is an expensive implementation process. I googled around and don't see anything. Also everything I've learned about SEO, I've never seen this mentioned anywhere. Not sure where to position myself because of lack of knowledge/information. Anyone has experience or opinions?
My natural suggestion would be to have excelling content on static pages that will have strong SERP regardless of archiving and the content that changes, will just keep changing and rank however it will. Or?

Hi there beritv, could you share some more information about this question? It would be good to get confirmation on a few points:
- What is the main purpose of the event page? I'm picturing a listings page which frequently changes because events are added and taken away, and includes either scroll loading or pagination for the latter results but someone I've chatted with about this thinks it could also be a static page which has changing details for a specific event.
- Which pages are we talking about archiving? Expired individual event pages?
- What is the nature of the archiving we're discussing? How would it work? I can see that Martin is asking whether it's a separate site (in which case I wouldn't recommend it particularly from an SEO perspective because if it's indexable it might start to compete with your live site). The person I've chatted with has asked whether this is a process of deindexing or taking offline the pages. If you could clarify that, it would help a lot.
- Are your IT dept. recommending this as an information store or are they citing SEO reasons?
If the concern is having lots of out-of-date event pages there may be file management and UX considerations to take into account - if having lots of defunct event pages makes your CMS unmanageable then it seems reasonable to have a way of refiling them there but that doesn't necessarily have to be reflected in the live site. On the other hand, are you seeing users landing on event pages for which the event has passed? If so, that's not fantastic UX and is likely to lead to them leaving your site immediately and clicking on another result which would have an SEO impact because it's sending consistent messages to Google that you're not fulfilling the search intent.

Hey there,
If I understand it correctly, you want to build a website just for the archiving?
In this case, it wouldn't make much sense, since the content could help you in the main website instead.
It seems you have a lot of content which would be very useful for longtail rankings. The more content on one site the better.
Cheers, Martin

Rankings Shifting for the Past 2-3 Years
For the past 2-3 years, my site’s organic rankings have been dramatically shifting, ranking well for a few days and then dropping for a month or two, then ranking again for a few days, and then dropping again. During the time of higher rankings, form submissions increase significantly. The ranking increases or decreases are typically between 10-30 spots each time. I’ve done everything I can think of to address any issues: improved speed, limited 404s, changed the architecture of the site, updated link anchor text, etc. Nothing seems to work. The site has 88% of its traffic coming from desktop, with 9% from mobile and 3% from tablet. The disparity between desktop and mobile leads me to believe that the ranking issues are mobile-related, especially now that Google is using mobile-first indexing. I thought dwell time could be an issue, but session duration is 2:07 minutes and bounce rate is under 60%, with an average of 2.27 pages per session. That doesn’t indicate any quality of traffic issues to me. There are no warnings in Google Search Console, and speed is 58 for mobile and 86 for desktop on Page Speed Insights. I’ve been doing SEO for 12 years, but this has me stumped. My top suspicions are: Speed issues on mobile Penalties for redirects from old website to the new website Penalties for anchor text for the old brand name instead of the new one. The site is https://dragonflydm.com Has anyone seen anything like this? Any ideas?

Archiving Blog Posts To Another Category Changes Permalink But Does It Affect SEO?
I'm launching a website that will give daily updates. The /daily/ category needs to be kept clear for the current day updates only, so each day I will be archiving the previous days updates to another folder, for example: /archive/. Each morning, when I archive the previous days post... the system will 301 the current url from /daily/ to /archive/ and the sitemap will be updated to reflect the change. What I am concerned about is my site will be packed with 301's and the information is more important on the day so I would expect the majority of backlinks + social shares will be to the /daily/ category url and visitors will be 301'd to the new url. How would this affect my SEO and is there a cleaner way to do this so?

E-commerce System without error page
I´d love to know your thoughts about this particular issue: Vtex is top3 e-commerce system in brazil. ( issue is huge) the system do not use 4XX responde codes If there is a error page, they just redirect it to a search page with 200 code. in Google index we can find a lot of "empty" pages ( indexed error pagess) We can´t use noindex for them Example:

Can Forum Signature Links be a positive thing?
Hello, I'm a relatively active member for a website support forum for the Genesis Framework - studiopress.com/forums. Right now I have a plain text signature, but I am thinking about linking to my website (a WordPress Development Firm) with branded anchor text. I understand the risk of Penguin for non-branded, keyword-heavy anchor text -- but If I do this with simply a link to my website's homepage or Genesis development page, do you think i'd be at risk? Thanks Zach

Should I check Use noindex for Tag Archives?
I have a page indexed > (http://mysite.com/mypost) and also http://mysite.com/tag/mypost The same post shows up twice, one with /tag/ one without when I search site:http://mysite.com

Is this a duplicate content?? Can I get penalized for this? In the All in one plugin should I check Use noindex for Tag Archives to avoid this or doesn't matter.

Is having a canonical tag for the link that IS the canonical a negative thing?
Throughout our site, canonical tags have been added where needed. However, the canonical tags are also included for the canonical itself. For example, for www.askaquestion.com, the canonical tag has been added as www.askaquestion.com. Will this have a negative impact or does it not really matter whether there is such a loop?
