Duplicate content across domains?
-
Does anyone have suggestions for managing duplicate product/solution website content across domains? (specifically parent/child company domains) Is it advisable to do this? Will it hurt either domain? Any best practices when going down this path?

Hi Roxanne
There's two general ways you go can:
1. Will the pages be exactly the same or very similar (like 95% or more)? If so, and you want to be 100% sure Google ranks the right one and consolidates their signals, you can use a Canonical tag. Point it from the page you don't want to rank to the page you do want to rank.
2. If the pages are different - different content, menus, functionality (can you purchase on one but not the other?) etc... then don't use a canonical - but do everything you can to
a) make them different,
b) make it clear to users the products exist in both places,
c) cross-link them if you can,
d) try consistently promote one over the other.
I also _highly _recommend you check out this great new post on duplicate content by Alexis - it's one of the best I've seen!

Did your name change? Or did I pull Patrice out of nowhere?!? haha
Anyway, if it's product detail pages you're referring to, you don't have too much to worry about. According to John Mueller of Google (https://www.seroundtable.com/google-rewriting-product-descriptions-22254.html) duplicates at the product level aren't a big deal. However, if you have any way to differentiate your pages, I would recommend doing that. Can you add a product review section? Q&A? Anything like that to create content unique to _your _versions of the products would be beneficial.

Hi Logan, Thank you for your response! Simple reason...our parent company is adding content about our products to their site. So the additional, duplicate content would be added to their site.

Patrice,
Any time this question comes up, it always raises a larger question of why? What is the purpose of 2 different domains if they contain the same content? It's almost always inadvisable to do this, but there are a few use cases where it's necessary. If you could provide some more details on the why, I can help answer your question a little better.
Alternatively, if you don't have a solid "why" or it doesn't come to you immediately, you might consider scrapping one of the domains

Website Redesign - Duplicate Content?
I hired a company to redesign our website.there are many pages like the example below that we are downsizing content by 80%.(believe me, not my decision)Current page: https://servicechampions.com/air-conditioning/New page (on test server):https://servicechampions.mymwpdesign.com/air-conditioning/My question to you is, that 80% of content that i am losing in the redesign, can i republish it as a blog?I know that google has it indexed. The old page has been live for 5 years, but now 80% of it will no longer be live. so can it be a blog and gain new (keep) seo value? What should i do with the 80% of content i am losing?

Two Domains, Same Products/Content
We're an e-commerce company with two domains. One is our original company name/domain, one is a newer top-level domain. The older domain doesn't receive as much traffic but is still searched and used by long-time customers who are loyal to that brand, who we don't want to alienate. The sites are both identical in products and content, which creates a duplicate content issue. I have come across two options so far: 1. a 301 redirect from the old domain to the new one. 2. Optimize the content on the newer domain (the strongest of the two) and leave the older domain content as is. Does anyone know of a solution better than the two I listed above or have experience resolving a similar problem in the past?

SEO effect of content duplication across hub of sites
Hello, I have a question about a website I have been asked to work on. It is for a real estate company which is part of a larger company. Along with several other (rival) companies it has a website of property listings which receives a feed of properties from a central hub site - so lots of potential for page, title and meta content duplication (if if isn't already occuring) across the whole network of sites. In early investigation I don't see any of these sites ranking very well at all in Google for expected search phrases. Before I start working on things that might improve their rankings, I wanted to ask some questions from you guys: 1. How would such duplication (if it is occuring) effect the SEO rankings of such sites individually, or the whole network/hub collectively? 2. Is it possible to tell if such a site has been "burnt" for SEO purposes, especially if or from any duplication? 3. If such a site or the network has been totally burnt, are there any approaches or remedies that can be made to improve the site's SEO rankings significantly, or is the only/best option to start again from scratch with a brand new site, ensuring the use of new meta descriptions and unique content? Thanks in advance, Graham

I'd like to introduce brand pages. In this case I would create new categories for Brand 1, Brand 2, etc... The text on categories and brand pages would be unique. But there will be an overlap in products. How do I deal with this from a duplicate content perspective? I'm appreciate your suggestions. Best, Robin0 -
Duplicated Content with Index.php
Good Afternoon, My website uses Joomla CMS and has the htaccess rewrite code enabled to ensure the use of search engine friendly URLs (SEF's). While browsing the crawl diagnostics I have found that Moz considers the /index.php URL a duplicate to our root. I will always under the impression that the htaccess rewrite took care of that issue and obviously I would like to address it. I attempted to create a 301 redirect from the index.php URL to the root but ran into an issue when attempting to login to the admin portion of the website as the redirect sent me back to the homepage. I was curious if anyone had advice for handling the index.php duplication issue, specifically with Joomla. Additionally, I have confirmed that in Google Webmasters, under URL parameters, the index.php parameter is set as 'Representative URL'.

Penalized for Duplicate Page Content?
I have some high priority notices regarding duplicate page content on my website www.3000doorhangers.com Most of the pages listed here are on our sample pages: http://www.3000doorhangers.com/home/door-hanger-pricing/door-hanger-design-samples/ On the left side of our page you can go through the different categories. Most of the category pages have similar text. We mainly just changed the industry on each page. Is this something that google would penalize us for? Should I go through all the pages and use completely unique text for each page? Any suggestions would be helpful Thanks! Andrea

I need to add duplicate content, how to do this without penalty
On a site I am working on we provide a landing page summary (say top 10 information snippets) and provide a link 'see more' to take viewers to a page with all the snippets. Now those first 10 snippets will be repeated in the full list. Is this going to be a duplicate content problem? If so, any suggestions.
